Chapter 107-Comfort
Chapter 107-Comfort
Lea's POV
" Kai... " The moment my eyes opened I threw my hands in all directions, trying to get up and look for Kai. But i didn't have to look much further.
He was right across and I could see him in the other room. My baby was latched to the beeping machines with pipes and wires and what not. And right beside him was Phill. He sat at his head side, his hand gently gliding up and down through his hair.
Phill turned towards me with a smile when he realised I was up. My head was still groggy because of the sedative the nurse had injected me with but I was feeling all better and alright.
" Lea, you are up! Are you feeling alright? "He asked me with that infectious smile. I should have been the one to ask him that question. He was the one with a wound. He had just saved my child's life all over again, perhaps for the zillionth time.
" I am fine. How are you feeling? How is Kai holding up?" I walked towards where he was. He was in a wheelchair, I noticed when I went near. He laughed when he saw the concern in my eyes as I looked him up and down awkwardly. " I will be using this for a day or two. It will help me to move around without straining myself. I am glad whoever came up with this idea of putting us all in the same suite. It's a relief. I will be able to monitor the two of you while I recover. " He moved away from the spot where he was sitting to let me have a better look at my son.
He looked smaller than the last time I saw him. His eyes were shut close but I could see his heart heaving. My poor little baby. He really was a fighter. He had been fighting even before he had been born. He went through so much... way too much and despite everything I could not hold him, comfort him. My tears were falling as naturally as my breathing at this point.
I could feel Phill's finger slip under mine as he held my hand. I was shaking. " He keeps telling me he wants to be a doctor when he grows up... " I mumbled without realising what I was saying. " Guess, he is getting all the exposure he needs. The hospital seems to be haunting him ever since he was conceived. "
" The hospital isn't such a bad place, now, is it? " I turned back to see Phill grinning at my remark. But it seemed like a sad grin. " After all I first met you when you came here. Remember ? Ahhhhh! " He let go of my hand, turned his wheelchair around and sighed. " Ahhhh! Lea... Ahhh! It has really been a long time, hasn't it. "
I ruffled Kai's hair before fixing it and kissing on his forehead before walking back to the couch beside my bed. " I lost count of the number of times I kept bumping into you and you saved me. It seems like a legacy now, doesn't it. Now you are doing the same for Kai... " I was fumbling with my fingers when he pulled up beside me and held my hands. " I have been such a burden for you... "
" Lea! " He looked offended. " Never ever say that. You have never been a burden. Not once. I loved every moment I spent with you. I cherish every single second of those moments we spent together. " I could see something flickering in his eyes which he was fighting too hard to subdue.
" I can never thank you enough for what you did for me. Even if I were to give my life for you it would never be enough. " I meant it. No matter what I did I would never be able to repay him. I would have never been able to meander through the ups and downs of my difficult pregnancy had Phill not been there, holding my hands all through the mess.
He came closer, holding my hand tighter. " You don't have to die for me, Lea. Be happy for me and live. That's all I want for you. That's all I have ever wanted. For you to be happy... smiling... " He was inches apart from my face. His forehead came closer and rested on mine. I leaned in so he didn't feel uncomfortable.I could see something was bothering him. I wanted him to feel at ease. He was still holding my hand and tracing lines on them with his fingers.
" Lea... " His voice was barely above a whisper and it was kind of hoarse. " Hhmmm... " I answered with my forehead still pressed on his as he spoke. " I know I am being selfish at this moment but I am sorry. I need to tell you this. Just once and then we will forget about it. "
I tried to look up but he pressed my head back on his forehead. I didn't understand what he was talking about.
" I am really glad that I got to be the donor for Kai. I always wished he was mine even before he was born. I got that wish granted in this somehow. A part of me will always live in him. " I was stunned. " But he is a part of you as well, isn't he? Even without this. He is your blood as well. You are family... "
Before I could stop talking I felt him lean forward and his lips crash on mine. I was frozen. I couldn't even shove him back. I could feel the salty taste of his tears mingle with that kiss as his hand went back on my head, gently holding it for support. His eyes were closed but mine were open. It was open wide as I saw his vulnerability exposed in front of me. I could feel his touch begging me, asking me for permission and I could feel that he yearned for comfort.
