Chapter 106-success

The minutes passed very slow as they waited outside the PICU. Lea lunged at Phill the moment he came out . "How is he? How's Kai?" Lea's voice trembled as she gripped Phill's arm. "Can we see him,now?" She added, trying to peek past Phill into the room.

Phill grabbed her shoulders and held her down, before looking up at Jake. Mercy stepped forward,noticing the grim expression on Phill's face. "Why do you look like that, Phill? What's wrong?" she asked. Phill ignored her and turned his attention back to Lea.

"You can't see him right now," he said softly. "Kai's awake, but... there's a problem." Lea's face fell, panic seeping into her eyes. "What do you mean? What's going on?What happened to my, Kai? "

Phill looked at her with apologetic eyes before turning to face Jake. "We ran some tests and found out that Kai's liver is in acute failure. It's because of toxic shock.We need to do a transplant as soon as possible to save him."Lea's knees buckled, and she collapsed into Jake's arms.

" How soon? " Jake's eyes glistened with unshed tears and he fought to maintain his composure while firmly supporting Lea's weight. " My baby... " She had her hand over her chest and was starting to hyperventilate a little.

" As soon as possible. We are preparing the OT as we speak. It won't take long. I am just waiting for some doctors whom I have called, to arrive . They are the best there is in town. Kai will be in safe hands. I will be there to monitor everything! " He tried to reassure himself and his brother. But both of them knew what a transplant meant at such a young age. He was scarred for life. Nothing would be the same again.

" What about the donor? Did you find a match? " Before Phill could answer a nurse came running up to him and whispered something in his ears. He nodded his head and quickly turned back to go inside but Jake held his hand. " Did you find a donor?I can do a compatibility test..." Jake repeated himself. Phill nodded and smiled. " It will only take more time. I had my profile ready. It matched Kai's perfectly. I got this. "

Before they could understand, he walked back inside and the door closed on their face.

Lea lost count how many times the light outside the operation theatre went on and off. She was starting to have laboured breaths.

" Lea... please let me take you back to your bed. Kai will be fine. I will be here for him. " Jake tried to persuade but she won't budge. Mercy looked around. " Let me get some help. " She vanished only to come back with a nurse from Lea's department. She checked Lea as she kept being uncooperative. She pulled out a needle and looked back at Jake, pressing something nonverbal and Jake nodded his consent. " This will help you relax. Alright? " Lea didn't even feel the prick of the needle as she pushed the sedative inside.

Astonishingly, it didn't seem to have any effect on Lea. She sat there, her eyes glued to the door of the operation theatre. Mercy came and sat beside her. "You know, Kai loved playing doctor ever since he was little. He always got a Doctor's suitcase whenever we visited any toy store. He has like dozens of them. He used to beg me to take him to the hospital. He has always been a healthy child. I didn't need to bring him to the doctor often. He loved it when I did. " Lea scoffed wiping her tears away. " And now... it seems like he will be latched to the hospital for the rest of his life. "

Mercy opened her mouth to try and say something soothing but just then the doors opened and two surgeons walked out. They removed their masks and smiled at all of them. "The operation was successful. "

The nurse who had helped Lea, clapped from the back. She had just walked in to check on Lea. Lea's eyes rolled up and she was knocked out.

It was really difficult to accommodate three VIP guests in the hospital at the same time. The staff weren't equipped to cater to all three at once. So they decided to shift Phill and Lea to a luxury suite and Kai in the room adjacent to them .

Mercy took her leave after kissing Kai's hair, sniffing his heavenly scent. Jake had to drive home to clean, get changed and get back to the hospital again. He was relieved the three of them were in the same room, together. That way, they would be able to look after each other if one woke up.

" I will be back before you wake up, Lea! " he kissed her forehead before sprinting off.
