Chapter 718: The Grandson Has Grown Up, His Heart and Eyes Full of His Wife
After Leah disappeared, the situation in the South Seas became noticeably tenser. Maximilian came to the villa every day, and Ignatius Leclair spent less time tinkering with the house and the little garden.
Delphine hadn’t found a suitable screenplay for her movie yet, so she simply decided to drive and pick up Nicholas and Benjamin herself. It was the weekend, and she wanted to take the two little ones to the zoo to see the tigers.
When she arrived at the kindergarten, Nicholas and Benjamin hadn’t been dismissed yet, and a long line of luxury cars was waiting to pick up the children.
Delphine walked to the entrance of the kindergarten, where the old butler greeted her warmly with a smile and said, "Miss Delphine, the old master happened to pass by here today and wanted to see the young master and little Miss."
Delphine paused for a moment, then nodded. She saw the old man get out of his car, leaning on his rosewood cane. Somewhat awkwardly, he squeezed past a group of elderly gentlemen and ladies, dusting off the brand-new Tang suit he had deliberately put on. When he spotted Delphine, there was none of his usual arrogance. Instead, he nodded and smiled eagerly, saying, "Are you here to pick up Benjamin and Nicholas? Where’s Ignatius?"
Ever since Delphine moved out of the Leclair Family estate after the New Year, Ignatius had moved out shortly after her. For the longest time, the old man hadn’t even seen his great-grandchildren—let alone his grandson. He was beside himself with worry. After holding back for days, he finally couldn’t resist anymore, tracked down the kindergarten Nicholas and Benjamin attended, and purposefully came by on a Friday to intercept them.
Nowadays, the old man didn’t dare show any attitude to Delphine. His grandson had grown up and was wholly focused on his wife, leaving no room for his grandfather. The old man’s plight could be summed up as a lifetime of bittersweet tears.
"Ignatius has been busy lately. I’m here to pick up the children." Delphine smiled lightly and, after speaking, quietly waited for the two little ones to be dismissed.
Looking at Delphine, who had been calm and composed over the years, the old man suddenly realized how his previously proud grandson’s heart had been captivated by her. Now that they had two children together and family gatherings had become sparse, the old man seemed to have accepted things. After all, he was someone with one foot in the grave—what was the point of worrying about the younger generation’s affairs?
"You and Ignatius should come back to the Leclair Family for dinner when you get the chance. Living outside and cooking on your own must be such a hassle. There’s plenty ready-made at home," the old man said, deliberately putting on a stern expression. "I’d also like to check if my two little darlings have lost weight."
Delphine was slightly surprised. Over the years, it seemed this was the first time the old man had shown any sign of accepting her.
The old man continued to ramble on, and soon, the kindergarten bell rang, signaling the end of the school day. A line of adorable children from the senior class came marching out in neat rows. Benjamin Leclair led the lineup—a pretty little girl, the shortest of the bunch but by far the most charming and adorable. Dressed in a pink wool pleated skirt and carrying an irresistibly cute backpack, her big, dark, grape-like eyes made her utterly endearing, drawing the envy and admiration of all the parents nearby.
As Benjamin and the handsome young boy behind her ran towards Delphine, the watching parents couldn’t help but marvel at the striking family. Their combined charm seemed to leave others speechless, prompting everyone to hurriedly usher their own unruly children into cars and drive off.
Seeing that it was Mommy who had come to pick them up, Benjamin and Nicholas immediately ran over, one on each side, and wrapped their arms around Delphine. They excitedly chirped on about their day in school as self-proclaimed classroom bosses, chattering away until a stern cough from the old man interrupted them. He rapped his cane on the ground, catching their attention. Only then did the two little ones notice their great-grandfather standing nearby.
Benjamin blinked in surprise and asked sweetly, "Great-grandpa, did you come to give Benjamin a lollipop?"
The old man had been so focused on making the trip that he hadn’t brought any candy. Instantly caught off guard by this little ancestor’s words, his face reddened with embarrassment. Flustered, he replied, "There are some back at home. I’ll take you back to get them."
And so, Delphine, along with Benjamin and Nicholas, found themselves swept up unexpectedly and redirected to the Leclair Family estate.
