The Price of Betrayal:
The Price of Betrayal:
[POV: Hayden]
My heart was still pounding violently, every beat fueled by rage and fear. Images of Aria beneath Cole's claws replayed endlessly in my mind, making my vision blur red with fury. I had come so close to losing her tonight—too close.
The echo of her terrified scream still rang in my ears, tearing at my heart.
When I’d sensed her fear and pain through our bond, my world had shattered into a million pieces. I'd relived a nightmare I thought I'd buried years ago—the night Annabeth was taken from me. The same panic, the same helplessness.
The sight of Aria injured and pinned beneath another wolf’s paws ignited a primal fury in me I didn't even know existed. I had attacked without hesitation, driven by the need to protect my mate, to keep her safe. I had ripped into Cole, my teeth tearing flesh and bone until he collapsed motionless to the ground. I had been certain I'd ended him—but his unexpected regeneration had caught me off guard, and he had escaped.
I cursed myself bitterly for allowing him to slip away. I should have pursued him, hunted him down, and ensured he never drew breath again. But Aria’s whimpering cries, the scent of her blood, had stopped me. She needed me, and nothing else mattered. My mate's safety came first; Cole’s punishment could wait.
Now, pacing restlessly in my office a week later, that decision still haunted me. Aria had recovered physically, thanks to our healer, but the emotional scars lingered. Her bravery in facing Cole was unquestionable, but I knew she had come dangerously close to a fate I couldn't bear to imagine. My promise to protect her had nearly been broken—again.
That failure gnawed at my heart, fueling my determination to make Cole pay. I had sent my most trusted spies into Midnight Crest territory, determined to discover Cole’s next move. Tonight, finally, they returned.
I stood silently, jaw clenched tight as my scouts reported their findings. My blood ran cold with disbelief.
"The Midnight Crest pack’s Alpha Julius and Luna Minerva are dead," the scout announced grimly. "Dayana and Cole have taken control of their pack."
Shock and disgust coursed through me.
I had expected treachery from Dayana, but the depth of their cruelty still stunned me. They had murdered their own Alpha and Luna without hesitation, she killed her own parents seizing power in a ruthless coup.
"Are you certain?" I demanded sharply.
"Yes, Alpha. We confirmed it,” The scout nodded. “Luna Dayana and Alpha Cole rule the Midnight Crest now. They’ve gathered followers quickly."
I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat. Cole was dangerous enough alone, but paired with Dayana’s ambition and malice, he was doubly lethal.
"What else?"
"Luna Dayana was seen entering Damian' territory," he added hesitantly.
My hands curled into fists, rage simmering beneath the surface.
Damian.
The name alone was enough to make my vision darken. The Alpha who had orchestrated the attack four years ago that took Annabeth from me.
If Dayana was forming an alliance with him…
"She went personally?" I asked, voice low and deadly.
"Yes," the scout replied gravely. "Witnesses saw her entering Damian' pack lands openly, speaking with him directly."
This was a nightmare scenario. If Damian joined forces with Dayana and Cole, the threat they posed would multiply beyond anything I’d anticipated.
Their alliance could destroy everything we had built, everything I cherished.
"Double our patrols immediately," I commanded sharply. "Inform every warrior to be prepared for anything."
"Of course, Alpha." The scouts bowed quickly and exited the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts, each darker than the last.
I sank into my chair, resting my head in my hands, frustration and anger battling inside me. Aria’s frightened eyes flashed through my mind again, sparking renewed resolve.
No matter how powerful Cole and Dayana became, I would never allow them to harm Aria again.
If they wanted war, they would have it. I would fight for my pack, for Aria, to the death if necessary. I wouldn't lose someone I loved again.
I wouldn’t fail Aria as I'd failed Annabeth.
My brief moment of reflection was violently shattered by frantic shouting outside the window. Leaping from my seat, I rushed to the balcony overlooking our territory.
Warriors ran through the grounds below, shifting into wolf form, snarling orders and preparing for battle. A young scout burst into the room behind me, eyes wide with panic.
"Alpha Hayden—our territory is under attack! Damian' pack has breached our borders, and they're not alone. Dayana and Cole’s wolves fight alongside them!"
Ice flooded my veins. This was it—the attack I'd dreaded. I had expected them to strike, but not so soon, not so boldly.
"They’ve penetrated deeply," the scout added urgently. "They’re heading directly for the pack house."
My mind snapped into strategic clarity. The enemy’s intent was obvious—targeting our heart, aiming to destroy us swiftly from within.
"Mobilize every warrior," I commanded sharply. "Secure the perimeter around the pack house. Protect our young and wounded. Let no enemy through!"
"Yes, Alpha!" The scout rushed away instantly, shouting orders as he went.
