The Wolf in the Shadows:
The Wolf in the Shadows:
[POV: Cole]
I moved silently through the darkness, shadows coiling around my paws like living things, hiding my scent, my presence—everything.
The powers I’d taken from Dayana blended seamlessly with mine, allowing me to slip unnoticed into Crimson Fang territory, my steps undetected even by the sharpest guards.
Inside me, Rau surged, his bloodlust and hunger for revenge burning hot, drowning out every shred of hesitation or reason. There was no longer a battle between us. Rau had fully taken control, our minds fused, his thoughts my own.
Tonight, all our rage would finally find release, our resentment towards Aria and Hayden erupting into glorious violence.
She abandoned us. Chose Hayden over us, Rau snarled inside my mind, “Now she’ll regret that choice.”
The thought brought a grim satisfaction. Aria had hurt us deeply, casting us aside without a second thought—after everything we’d once shared.
Tonight, she’d finally understand the depth of that betrayal.
I stayed hidden, waiting patiently near the training grounds. It was late; the moon was high, partially obscured by heavy clouds. Silence settled around me as the last warriors finished their training and left.
Finally, Aria emerged, alone, walking slowly toward the pack house, lost in her thoughts.
I sprang forward, shadows slipping away as I revealed myself. Aria spun around instantly, eyes wide with shock as recognition flooded her expression.
“Cole?” she gasped. “What are you doing here?”
I bared my teeth, unable to stop a bitter growl from escaping.
“Taking back what belongs to me.”
Her eyes narrowed, confusion and worry clouding her features. “Cole, listen—this isn’t you. You need to stop. Just calm down, please—”
“Calm down?” I snapped, voice dripping with resentment. “You left me, Aria. You betrayed everything we had. For him.”
“You chose Dayana first,” she reminded me desperately, her voice shaking. “I tried to move on, just like you did—”
Her words burned through me, fueling my anger. Rau roared inside my chest, pushing me forward.
“You abandoned me! And now you'll face the consequences.”
I lunged, striking out swiftly. Aria reacted quickly, dodging and deflecting my blows, her movements graceful but frantic.
Her desperation showed in every action, every attempt to reason with me, her eyes wide and pleading.
“Cole, please!” she shouted. “This isn’t you!”
“Stop pretending you care,” I snarled, my voice distorted by rage. Her pleading only pushed me harder, the fury inside me flaring hotter, darker.
With a frustrated growl, Aria shifted forms, becoming the graceful white wolf I'd never seen her as before. Her newfound strength was impressive, but tonight it wouldn't matter.
Tonight, nothing would stop me.
I shifted instantly, my wolf form larger, stronger, empowered by Dayana’s borrowed magic. We clashed violently, our growls echoing through the silent forest.
She was agile, determined, but I fought with ruthless intensity, driven by an anger that blinded all reason.
Using her shadow powers, Aria attempted to outmaneuver me, vanishing and reappearing unpredictably. I struggled briefly, her movements difficult to track—but then the clouds covered the moon completely, plunging us into pitch darkness.
Without moonlight, her powers weakened, and there was nowhere for her to hide.
I took advantage immediately, pouncing forward and sinking my teeth deeply into her hind leg. Aria yelped sharply, her balance faltering as she crashed to the ground.
Adrenaline surged as I quickly grabbed her by the scruff of the neck, dragging her roughly across the dirt.
Victory flared inside me, a fierce, twisted pleasure at finally overpowering her. But just as I began to pull her away, a furious roar echoed through the trees, stopping me instantly.
Hayden.
He burst from the shadows, his massive black wolf form barreling toward me with deadly intent.
Before I could react, he slammed into me with brutal force, knocking me away from Aria. I scrambled to my paws, snarling in challenge, but he struck again, relentless, merciless.
Pain exploded through me as his teeth tore into my side. Blood filled my mouth, my vision dimming at the savage wounds he inflicted.
I fell heavily, gasping, my strength rapidly fading. I struggled weakly, but Hayden towered over me, eyes blazing with lethal fury, ready to end me.
Yet at that moment, Aria whimpered softly, and Hayden’s head snapped around, instantly distracted by her cry. He rushed to her side, shifting back to human form, cradling her gently as he whispered soft reassurances, brushing her face tenderly with trembling hands.
The tenderness between them—the deep, raw emotion—sent searing jealousy and hatred through me. Even as my life drained away, I burned at the sight, despising their bond, despising her happiness with him.
But suddenly, the pain in my body shifted—fading away.
My wounds began healing rapidly, a burning heat radiating from my injuries, stitching flesh and bone together effortlessly. My regeneration abilities, amplified by Dayana’s magic, surged through me, healing me at impossible speeds.
I stayed motionless a moment longer, playing dead until their attention was fully on each other.
Then, with the last of my renewed strength, I surged to my feet and sprinted away, vanishing quickly into the darkness.
I ran, lungs burning, heart pounding, every muscle screaming with exertion—but I was alive. Alive and victorious in my own twisted way.
Even though Aria wasn't mine yet, I had succeeded. I’d shown Hayden exactly how vulnerable he was—how vulnerable his beloved Luna was.
As the Crimson Fang territory faded behind me, satisfaction replaced my rage. Aria was Hayden’s weakness, his greatest vulnerability—and now, thanks to tonight, I knew precisely how to break him.
