31: Unexpected
31: Unexpected
Kit:Kit blinked rapidly…his mind racing as he tried to process what he had just witnessed.
So many emotions rushed through him that he could hardly even keep track of what he was feeling…that was until he felt someone tug at his shirt from behind.
Startled, he looked back to find NongBefore he could say anything, Som had taken a hold of Kit’s hand and was dragging him back inside the mansion once again and this time, Kit followed behind her reluctantly, not knowing what else to do.
Som took them up the spiral staircase to the first floor where all their rooms were located, all the while they kept looking back to make sure that no one, especially P’Kla or P’Kanya, wasn’t following them.
Finally, the two of them came to a stop right outside Som’s bedroom and she let go of his hand, panting with her hands on her knees as her tiny form tried to catch up with the lack of oxygen.
“That was close!” Som panted, before she straightened and looked up at Kit. “I didn’t expect you to show up here suddenly.”
“I…umm…er…I…” Kit was finding it quiet difficult to form coherent words at that moment.
“Wow!” He breathed out finally, running his hands down his face before he ran them through his hair, messing them up even more.
“Would you like to come inside?” Som offered. “I can have some coffee or tea delivered.”
“I’d love to.” Kit told her, shaking his head. “Coffee sound brilliant right now.”
Som invited Kit into her room and within a few minutes, refreshments arrived at her doorstep, which she accepted gratefully before handing Kit his coffee.
She watched Kit drink his coffee, slowly, as if he was distracted. She didn’t have to be told twice what exactly had been distracting him. She already knew.
“Are you upset?”
“What? No!” Kit looked up startled at Som’s soft voice, a little startled since she had been so quiet that he had almost forgotten that she was even there. Now, he took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves as he explained his side to Som.
“No…I’m not upset, I’m just surprised.” He shrugged, placing the coffee mug on the table.
“To be honest, I…I’ve just…never seen my sister with anyone before. Not in high school, in college or even after.”
He shrugged again, looking back up at Som, who was listening to his explanations quietly. “P’Kim is the only person that P’Kanya has ever been really close to. And for a little while I…I thought they…might end up together.”
“P’Kim likes men.” Som interjected, sipping on her own coffee.
“Yes…I know.” Kim nodded, politely leaving out the part where her brother was now his lover…since Kit didn’t think it was the appropriate time to be saying it out loud, since P’Kim wasn’t here himself.
“But…you know what I mean, right?” Kit asked, looking at Som almost helplessly. “P’Kim is the only man I had ever seen her with…so…P’Kla…”
“That’s because she’s asexual.”
“Pardon?” Kit narrowed his eyes at Som sharply.
“Oh! I’m sorry…you didn’t know...” Som’s eyes widened in surprise as she placed a hand over her mouth. “Sorry…I…I thought your sister may have told you about it.”
“We aren’t that open enough to discuss sexual preferences or partners in our house.” Kim told her softly, hoping that she would understand.
In fact, it had shocked him quite a lot when he had arrived here the first day and P’Kla and P’Kim had been openly discussing surrogacy and P’Kim sexual preference so openly in front of NongIt’s not something that was ever discussed in his house, not that they ever had the time or the opportunity to do so. Because even before his mother died, they were always working, both his mother and his sister.
So the only time the three of them could gather together and have a proper conversation was during dinner and that too went by mostly talking about how everyone’s day had been spent.
Kit didn’t want to think that these kinds of discussions and openness were probably part of the wealthy people’s lifestyle, but he couldn’t help it.
However, he didn’t want his conversation with Nong Som to turn awkward either, so he stood up from his seat abruptly, trying to find a way to excuse himself, when there was a knock on the door.
“I think that’s her.” Som said wearily. “Do you want me to get it?”
“No.” Kit shook his head. “I’ll get it.”
After all, he was bound to have the talk with his sister now that they had both calmed down a bit.
“It was their first kiss…just so you know.” Som told him just as he was about to open the door.
Kit froze with his hand on the doorknob. “Huh?”
“I’ve been watching them,” she shrugged. “They didn’t develop feeling for each other until recently…and this was their first kiss. I would know, since P’Kaya is literally always with me. So…don’t be too hard on her.”
“Wasn’t even thinking about it.” Kit said as he opened the door to reveal P’Kanya’s pensive expression.
“Kit?” P’Kanya asked, her voice hesitant. “Can I talk to you for a bit?”
“Dai khab“Let’s.”

Kim:“How did this happen?” Kim asked Aawut as one of his men bandaged the gunshot wound in his arm.
The shot had gone through, hitting only muscle and not bones, so Aawut’s arm was safe for the time being, but Kim knew very well that Aawut won’t be able to help him now since his right arm had been the one to get injured.
It worried him. Aawut has always had his back, ever since he could remember. And now, he was down.
“They snuck up on me, Sire.” Aawut lowered his head, feeling ashamed for not having had a better grasp on his surroundings. “As soon as I ended the call and was about to head back to you…someone open fired at the market area. They didn’t even care that the entire area was filled with civilians…which tells me that this is becoming more of a regular occurrence now.”
“If that’s the case then why weren’t we informed?” Kim cursed out loud, pacing around the room in frustration. “Why didn’t anyone here tell us about how serious it had gotten?”
“Probably because we have a traitor.” Aawut said solemnly. “Why do you think the Russians got hold of this area in the first place?”
As Aawut’s words hung in the air, dread settled in Kim’s stomach.
How much of this trade area had he left unchecked and for how long? If the one of his men had really joined hands with the Russians…then he needed to find that traitor and fast!
“We can’t waste any more time.” Kim said, to no one in particular. “We have to crush them before they grow stronger!”
“And we will.”
Kim turned to face the new voice in the room, his gun drawn in his hand and ready to fire as he held it up to the intruder.
Several other guns were drawn at the same time, each pointed at the other at the two Mafioso clans stood in front of each other.
Finally, both Kim and First lowered their guns at the same time and their men followed the move, acknowledging that the danger was now past.
“Yes, we will.” Kim said, referring to P’First’s earlier statement. “Together.”
“Together.” P’First smirked.
Right then, two clans that had been enemies for decades, finally lowered their weapons and their leaders shook hands as they came up with a strategy to deal with a common enemy.
