Chapter 18: Suspicious
Kla:
“P’Kla?” Kaya smiled at the older man as she approaches the pool in the backyard to find him standing towards the edge and enjoying the view of the sun shining off of the clear blue water. “Sawadee Kha.”
Kla was wearing a bright blue shirt with tiny white palm trees embroidered onto it and he had paired it with white dress pants. His sunglasses covered most of his face and the light afternoon wind blew his hair onto his forehead, making him look a lot younger than his age. In fact, Kla was only four years older than Kim and Kaya, making him thirty three years old.
“Sawadee Khap,Khun Kanya.” Kla bowed slightly in greeting as Kaya raised her hands in greeting. “Did you come for a swim?”
Kla intended to head back inside in case Kanya did intend to use the pool.
“Mi mi kha!” (Not at all) Kaya shook her head instantly. “I just wanted to get out of my room for a little bit. Since Nong Som hasn’t come back yet, I was feeling a little lonely.”
“I see.” Kla nodded, narrowing his eyes slightly at the woman in front of him as she walked up to one of the pool chairs and sat down with ease, making herself at home immediately.
Kla had been very busy with a case recently and had hardly had time to come to the main house as often as he used to. In fact, the reason he arrived today had been to visit Som as well, until the maids had told him that Nong Som had afternoon classes and would arrive late. Even Kim wasn’t home, which he understood since his brother had to look after various businesses, so often times he didn’t even return home for days on end.
However, being busy as he had been, he had missed the opportunity to get to know the woman who his brother suddenly seemed to trust enough to produce future heirs with. Unfortunately for the siblings, Kla wasn’t so trusting.
Who exactly was Kanya Ritthirong? He wasn’t as concerned about her younger brother Kit, who was yet too young to think in twisted way, but Kanya…he didn’t really trust her. A young and beautiful woman like her…why would she want to give away her future and everything she could achieve…just to bear a child for her so-called ‘best friend’? How deep was her friendship with Kim anyway?
Kaya looked up at Kla at that moment, because she had this odd sensation that he might be staring at her, even though he wasn’t directly facing her and his shades covered his face.
Feeling a little nervous with him around, she offered him a warm smile. “Why don’t you take a seat, P’Kla? You’ll tire your feet.” She patted the seat beside her. “You’re waiting for Nong Som, right? She’ll be back in about an hour.”
Kla’s frown deepened at her words. “You seem to know her schedule very well?”
“Oh?” Kaya seemed surprised at the question. “It’s Wednesday. Nong Som has classes till four on Wednesdays and till three on Mondays and Fridays, and finally Tuesdays are morning classes so she’s usually back by 1PM at the latest.”
Kla raised his eyebrows at the very specific details that Kaya gave him. How was she so fluent about Som’s schedule?
However, instead of taking insult at P’Kla’s frown, Kanya laughed at his suspicious expression. “I just know all that because I have no one to spend time with other than her. Who would’ve thought that living in a big house could be so lonely? If my Nongwas here, then I would have someone to spend time with as well, but even he decided to move out.
“Do you want to move out as well?” Kla asked out of curiosity. “Live with your Nong?”
“I thought about it at first.” Kaya gave Kla a sad smile. “I even told Kim to take the money he receives after selling the last condo I use to live in…but that stubborn boy refuses to do so! But…”
“But?” Kla urged.
“I don’t want to move in with Kit either.” She sighed heavily. “He’s twenty one. A grown up boy who deserves his own privacy and personal space without having his Philooking over his shoulders at every turn. I want him to do what boys his age should be doing.”
Kla found himself smirking at that comment. “What should boys his age be doing again?”
“I don’t know! Don’t make me say them out loud!” Kaya found herself laughing heartily for the first time in a long while. “Watching things they shouldn’t be watching? Getting drunk? I’m not going to exaggerate, but I think my Nong is responsible enough not to do riskier things.”
“You mean like…bringing a lover home?” Kla raised his eyebrows, wondering if he should tell her about what he had caught on from his own brother.
But instead, he found Kanya laughing even harder. “You think Kim will let him?”
To say that Kla was surprised…would be the understatement of the century. “How did you find out?”
“Oh, please!” She shook her head, making her wavy hair bounce around her head, the locks appearing a darker brown in the sunlight. “Kim has always been super predictable when he’s likes someone. However…I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this yet.”
Kla watched her laughter subside as a faraway look appeared in her eyes. For a moment, he was worried that she might be opposed to the idea of her brother liking men; however, when he asked her, she simply shook her head.
“We’re not living in the stone ages anymore! Why would I mind if his lover is a boy or a girl?” She shrugged. “What I’m worried about…is the fact that he might get involved with a man who has connections to the crime world.”
And that was one point that even Kla couldn’t argue with, especially when he himself was always worried about his brother’s safety.
Kla desperately wanted Kim to go legal and he had helped Kim transform some of their father’s many businesses legal as well, however, their father didn’t work alone and those who had once supported their father were powerful figures in the criminal underworld. It was never easy breaking away from a large syndicate without being a target. Both Kim and Kla knew they had several enemies and even though Som had been carefully hidden, they also knew people were always following them around to unearth new secrets.
Now, Kla wondered exactly how much trouble were they putting the siblings into by bringing them into their lives.
The Ayutthaya family was already a target to those who wanted to get rid of the brothers and take over their businesses…and Kanya had every right to be worried about her little brother.
All Kla could hope for now was that Kim knew what he was doing…because it would be too late for regrets later on.
