Chapter 1113: Afraid
Chapter 1113: Afraid
Ling Feng didn’t realize that Hehua had developed a deep sense of dependency on him, which was why she couldn’t bear to see him leave.
Since the girl was hugging him from behind, he could only pat her hand lightly and say, "Alright, it’s already so late. Your parents will be worried. Go back."
"I won’t!"
Hehua shook her head and then said, "Wherever you go, I’ll go too. Anyway, they know I’m with you, so they won’t be worried!"
Her stubbornness startled Ling Feng. He hadn’t expected Hehua to be so bold, and after pausing for a moment, he let out a helpless sigh, thinking to himself, what am I supposed to do?
He had initially returned to Little Lian’s house to teleport to the Nine Heavens, but now this girl had clung onto him, and he clearly couldn’t take her along!
After hesitating for a moment, Ling Feng finally said, "If you’re going to follow me, then we’ll have to go to Little Lian’s house!"
"Oh, okay."
Hehua paused for a moment, but quickly nodded in agreement.
And so, the two of them entered the village under the cover of night and soon arrived at Little Lian’s home.
However, as soon as they reached the door, Hehua hesitated again.
Stopping in her tracks, she lowered her head and asked, "Um, is that sister from earlier today staying here?"
Ling Feng froze for a second, scanning the house with his divine sense. Finding no one inside, he replied, "She’s not here."
"Oh..."
Hehua fidgeted with the edge of her clothes, saying nothing further.
She didn’t even know how she felt right now. On one hand, she hoped Chen Yuhe was here so she wouldn’t have to worry about the awkwardness of being alone with Ling Feng.
On the other hand, she didn’t want Chen Yuhe to be here, so she wouldn’t feel like her motives were being doubted.
Such was the conflicted heart of a young girl.
Ling Feng had already stepped into the house and, after turning on the bedroom light, turned back to Hehua, who still had her head down, and said, "You’ll sleep here tonight. I’ll stay outside, don’t be afraid!"
Looking around the room, Hehua suddenly thought of Little Lian and asked, "By the way, why isn’t Sister Lian home?"
"Oh, she went to Hongqi Town," Ling Feng said, fabricating a lie out of necessity.
Hearing his response, Hehua didn’t probe further, simply nodding and sitting nervously on the edge of the bed.
Ling Feng could naturally sense what she was feeling anxious about. Smiling, he said, "Alright, freshen up and get ready for bed. I’ll head outside now."
With that, he walked out and closed the door behind him.
Pulling up a chair, Ling Feng didn’t plan on resting immediately. Instead, his thoughts wandered back to the events that unfolded when he returned to the ruins.
Chen Jin, for instance—there was no need to let him off the hook. Ling Feng had dealt with him swiftly upon approaching. As for Wang Xi, witnessing the scene had scared him witless. Despite being seriously injured, he had dropped to his knees, begging for mercy pitifully without cease.
Seeing Wang Xi’s advanced age, Ling Feng didn’t harm him further, simply scolding him before leaving.
The dilemma now weighing on Ling Feng was that the sword he had retrieved—it seemed others were fixated on it as well. But who had leaked this information? And what was the real purpose behind leading people to Hu Family Village?
No matter how much he deliberated, Ling Feng couldn’t come up with answers.
After some time had passed, he heard faint sounds of movement from the inner room. Shortly afterward, Hehua’s soft voice came from inside. "Brother Ling, are you... are you asleep?"
"Not yet. What’s wrong?" Ling Feng asked, rising to his feet.
Hehua didn’t answer, but instead pushed the door open just enough for a small crack.
Ling Feng walked closer and saw her standing there with her head down. He asked in puzzlement, "What’s going on?"
"Um, I’m scared to be alone..." Hehua said without raising her head.
"Uh..."
Ling Feng was speechless. He thought to himself, we’re not close enough to sleep in the same bed, are we? Isn’t this a bit inappropriate?
After a moment’s hesitation, he couldn’t help but ask, "So what do you want to do?"
"C-can you stay with me?"
Hehua’s voice was almost inaudible, like the buzz of a mosquito.
Ling Feng chuckled wryly and said, "You really are something. When shy, your face turns red so quickly, yet when bold, your courage knows no bounds. Aren’t you afraid of me?"
"No, I’m not. I know you’re a good person." Hehua, understanding his implication, stammered in response.
"But I’m still a man!" Ling Feng said with a bitter smile.
At that, Hehua lifted her head, her eyes shimmering. "If you want to, I wouldn’t refuse!"
Ling Feng: "..."
After a long pause, he ruffled Hehua’s hair playfully and said, "Silly girl, I was just teasing you!"
He then stepped into the room and added, "See, now you can rest assured. Go on, sleep!"
"What about you?" Hehua asked.
"I’ll sit by the bed until you fall asleep," Ling Feng replied.
Only then did Hehua feel secure. Truthfully, if the two of them were to lie on the bed together, her anxiety would have been off the charts!
Although she had said such bold words just now, if anything truly happened, she wouldn’t have been mentally prepared. She had summoned every ounce of courage to say what she did.
If Ling Feng really made a move on her, Hehua wasn’t sure whether she would faint from sheer nervousness!
After lying down on the bed, she saw Ling Feng sitting peacefully beside her, his eyes closed, seemingly in meditation. Her mind instantly relaxed, and her fear dissipated.
Before long, Hehua drifted off into dreamland.
Ling Feng, seeing that she was asleep, shook his head with a sigh and quietly stepped outside.
Despite the girl’s beauty, he had no intention of taking advantage of her. She’d clearly been shaken by the frightening experiences in the mountains, and her fear of sleeping alone was understandable.
To take advantage of such an opportunity would have been downright despicable!
Once in the outer room, Ling Feng plopped into a chair, stretched his legs up onto the table, and closed his eyes.
Who knew how much time had passed before the sound of footsteps approached again? Ling Feng opened his eyes and turned to see Chen Yuhe standing there with an amused expression.
It was still dark outside, and Ling Feng asked in confusion, "Why are you back so early?"
Chen Yuhe smiled and dragged a chair over, sitting down lightly. "I came to catch you in the act!"
"..."
Ling Feng was speechless. "You really have some imagination. Are you satisfied now that you haven’t caught anything?"
"Satisfied? What’s the point? You’ve only been in the village for one day, and you’ve already won over Little Lian. Who’s to say you wouldn’t win over Hehua tonight?" Chen Yuhe retorted grumpily.
Ling Feng shot her a glare and said, "You really do know how to think. But I have my reasons for being here with Hehua!"
He then recounted the events he’d encountered in the mountains.
After hearing his account, Chen Yuhe simply said "Oh," showing little interest in Wang Xi or Chen Jin. Instead, she asked, "Nothing turned up in Hu Family Village. So, what’s your plan going forward?"
"What else can I do? Since I already intend to visit here regularly, I’ll just wait. I didn’t get an assignment deadline from higher-ups anyway," Ling Feng shrugged.
"That’s true!"
Chen Yuhe nodded and smacked her lips. "This mountainous terrain is so vast. Finding people hiding here won’t be easy!"
"Who said it would be?"
Ling Feng replied with a bitter laugh.
Just as he finished speaking, his phone suddenly began to ring!
