"It’s you who don’t want to rent the party venue, so why should I return your rental fee? Clearly, it’s you who want to break the contract, what’s it got to do with me?" the staff member protested in dissatisfaction.

"I disagree with you there, so let’s straighten out the logic. Since you said ’highest bidder wins,’ and our bid wasn’t high, the party venue rental should go to Mr. Song, right?" Xu Ke asked.

The staff member, fearing Xu Ke would trip her up, repeatedly went through his words in her mind, finding no loopholes, before nodding in agreement.

"So since this party venue is already Mr. Song’s, our rental relationship has ended, shouldn’t you be returning our deposit?" Xu Ke smiled and asked in return.

"But Mr. Song doesn’t want it, now the party venue belongs to you," the staff member replied unsatisfied.

"But what does that have to do with us? We made only one transaction with you, and you’ve refused our offer, ending our transaction at that point—even though you hadn’t returned our deposit yet," Xu Ke said calmly.

"As for you saying Mr. Song doesn’t want it and the venue belongs to us, I must say sorry—our transaction was only with you. This counts as a second transaction, and the current situation is I’m rejecting your second transaction. It’s that simple; if you don’t return our money, I plan to have a talk with your boss tonight, and if it can’t be resolved there, perhaps we can discuss it at the police station. I’m sure Mr. Song would be willing to testify for us, right?"

Xu Ke directed attention to Mr. Song, who ignored the staff member’s pleas, nodding happily to agree with Xu Ke’s approach.

"Mr. Song, please come over and settle the final payment with me," the staff member spoke.

Mr. Song sighed, baffled, "Why should I settle a payment with you? I haven’t used your venue. Also, you’ve offered the venue to two parties simultaneously, violating the contract spirit, so you should return my deposit. I even have the right to pursue compensation."

Mr. Song’s approach was even harsher than Xu Ke’s, aiming beyond just returning the deposit to scraping some extra benefits from her.
