Before opening the door, Guoguo was anxious and worried that Xu Ke might not be accustomed to their home’s dilapidation. Yet, as soon as she opened the door, Guoguo’s anxiety vanished instantly, and she stood there like a statue, motionless at the doorway.

"Guoguo, just get in already, what are you doing standing at the doorway?" Tangtang noticed Guoguo lingering at the door and spoke up, nudging Guoguo aside and opening the door.

"No!" But Guoguo’s voice came too late, Tangtang had already opened the door. The room was cluttered with various items, and the living room reeked of alcohol and vomit. Tangtang’s smile froze in place, and then completely faded away.

Seeing their home in this state, Tangtang’s vision darkened. They never expected that couple to come home so early today, especially at this time. Tangtang felt her face burn with shame. She never imagined this would happen—it felt like their pride was trampled on the floor.

In that moment, Tangtang deeply regretted it. If time could be reversed, she would never have pushed Guoguo aside and opened the door. Xu Ke was tall, and had taken in the scene clearly. Although he had no issues with the sisters, he did with the condition of the house. It was simply too messy and repulsive.

"Sorry, given the situation today, we can’t invite you in for a drink." Guoguo lowered her head, not daring to look at Xu Ke’s expression. She even felt her face burning as she spoke, unconsciously biting her lower lip, using the pain to distract from her embarrassment.

"It’s alright, you guys can head back in, I won’t come in." Xu Ke said with a slight smile. He could probably guess what the sisters were feeling—embarrassed by having him see this scene, too ashamed to face anyone. The sisters had their own pride and dignity, so Xu Ke certainly wouldn’t stay and make things worse for them.

As Xu Ke turned to leave, a man’s loud voice came from inside the house.

"What are you two chirping about at the door? Get in here and tidy up this place! Can’t you see how messy it is? Did I raise you both this big just to freeload? You’re lazy and greedy. How did I end up with daughters like you, good for nothing! If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I should’ve flushed you down the toilet when you were born."

The man cursed as he came to the door and was caught off guard meeting eyes with Xu Ke, who was standing there. The man’s face visibly froze, seemingly not expecting to see a man at their door, especially one clearly returning with his two daughters.

The expression on the man’s face inside the house suddenly became quite intricate. His gaze, resting on his daughters, didn’t show a hint of anger, but rather contempt and lecherousness. It’s hard to imagine how a father could look at his children like that. This expression halted Xu Ke’s decision to leave.

"Are you the one who came back with these two little bitches?" The man’s critical eye roved over Xu Ke, as if assessing his worth.

The man’s clothing seemed not to have been washed for quite a while, crumpled like salted vegetables, with prominent stains likely from splattered soup. His hair was equally neglected, greased into clumps as if it could fry a dish, and Xu Ke even noticed flies landing on it.

But what stood out most was his yellow teeth and long black nails, which he used to pick his teeth, a disgusting scene that almost made Xu Ke throw up what he’d eaten at a food stall. Though he didn’t vomit, his stomach was churning uncomfortably.

Xu Ke looked at the man and was genuinely curious how someone like this could father daughters as nice as Tangtang and Guoguo. The father and daughters looked entirely dissimilar—perhaps their mother was exceptionally attractive?

Just as Xu Ke was speculating, a woman wearing a men’s floral shirt and loose men’s pants, with disheveled hair like a bird’s nest, came out of the house in slippers. The woman’s figure was notably plump, resembling a walking meatball, though it was a rotten one.

"What’s going on outside? Everyone should be in instead of standing at the door. Do you want to let all the mosquitoes in? Aren’t you two bitches going to start cooking? There’s nothing left at home. You want your dad and me to starve?" The woman’s sharp voice rang out.

"You never gave us any money. How are we supposed to buy anything?" Tangtang replied, deciding not to hide since Xu Ke had already seen them at their worst. There was no point in pretending when it couldn’t cover anything, better to save the effort.

"No money? Didn’t I give you two two hundred yuan before?" The woman’s dissatisfied voice quickly retorted.

"That was a month ago. A month’s passed and the money’s long gone." Tangtang shot back.

"Gone and you don’t go work to earn more? We’ve raised you for over twenty years. You’re grown-ups now, and you still need me to teach you these things? Or do you plan to mooch off us and keep asking your dad and me for money?" The woman stood before the sisters, arms akimbo, alongside the man, effectively blocking the doorway as if intending not to let the sisters in.

"Raised us for over twenty years? Do you not feel shame saying that? Did we really live on your support for so long? If we relied on you, we’d have starved. We started working and earning since junior high. We paid for our schooling ourselves, what do you have to do with it?" Guoguo retorted coldly.

Guoguo stood beside Tangtang, the sisters holding hands tightly, drawing strength from each other.

As soon as Guoguo finished speaking, the woman’s palm swung down, without warning and swiftly, not giving anyone time to react. The slap landed squarely on Guoguo’s face, turning her head to one side, and the taste of iron filled her mouth.
