Chapter 947 - 946: Sending Them Home
"You look at us with such pure eyes, like a big brother looking at his little sisters. You’re willing to accompany us to eat at roadside stalls, buy us food, and take care of us. Your gentlemanly demeanor seems to come from within, so we think you’re a good person, and a very gentlemanly one at that."
Guoguo expressed her agreement with Tangtang’s conclusion by nodding.
"You two..." Xu Ke sighed deeply and said.
Although the sisters appeared naïve and their eyes were very innocent, it didn’t mean they were clueless or simple-minded. They could clearly distinguish who around them were good people and who were not. Their eyes were pure because, no matter what hardships life threw at them, they chose to face them with a broad-minded and optimistic attitude, rather than being easily deceived.
The more the sisters revealed, the more Xu Ke felt sorry for them. Despite their circumstances being quite bleak, they’d never complained about their lives or blamed anyone. Even though their world seemed dark, there wasn’t a hint of gloom in them—only an endless hope for life.
Xu Ke admired the light within them, their attitude toward life, their clear laughter free from shadows, and how they seemed undefeatable no matter what they faced. At this moment, Xu Ke hoped he could protect them, allowing them to remain this way forever.
The sisters didn’t know what Xu Ke was thinking, but being with him brought a sense of long-lost relaxation and happiness.
"It’s getting late, let me take you home," Xu Ke said after checking the time.
"No need, we can go home by ourselves," Guoguo replied with a smile, refusing Xu Ke’s offer.
"I’d still feel better walking with you. It’s late, and you’re just two girls. If anything happened, it wouldn’t be good," Xu Ke insisted.
Upon hearing this, Guoguo didn’t refuse anymore. In reality, even though there were two of them, walking at night still frightened them. She had refused earlier so Xu Ke wouldn’t think they were troublesome and grow annoyed, since he was one of the few good people they’d encountered willing to help them unconditionally.
It wasn’t that no one wanted to help them, but such offers usually contained unspeakable ulterior motives. They didn’t want to throw themselves into a pitfall for the sake of a minor inconvenience. Going to the club seemed like preparing for a futureless path.
They had no other options, like being stranded on an island surrounded by dangerous waters, with the island itself crumbling beneath them. It was the lack of choices that led them down this road.
But now it seemed as if destiny had favored them, albeit playfully. Otherwise, why would life present them with this man just as they were about to give up? He rekindled their hope and gave them strength to face life anew, truly the most wonderful thing in the world.
The sisters lived in a less than ideal place, an old neighborhood. The security guard at the entrance was an elderly man, his clothing reeking of alcohol. With bleary eyes, it was clear he drank a lot.
Xu Ke looked up to check the neighborhood’s surveillance system, only to find an empty spot where the cameras should have been. This area was clearly lacking in security.
Initially, Xu Ke intended to leave once he got them to the neighborhood entrance. Going further seemed inappropriate, as this was their first time meeting, and their relationship hadn’t reached that level. However, seeing the current situation, Xu Ke couldn’t leave them to enter alone, given how dark it seemed inside.
"Can I walk you in?" Xu Ke asked, glancing at the dimly lit neighborhood.
"That would be wonderful," Tangtang quickly spoke before Guoguo could refuse.
She was afraid Guoguo would turn Xu Ke down. Although she accompanied her sister, every time they walked this path, Tangtang was terrified, especially of a sudden encounter. Despite being two, their ability to fight off an attacker was low, and facing an unexpected threat felt unsafe.
But it turned out Tangtang misunderstood Guoguo. Even without saying it, Guoguo wasn’t inclined to refuse. Fear wasn’t Tangtang’s alone; Guoguo had her share, always masking it before.
Additionally, since Xu Ke had already walked them to the neighborhood, going a bit further wouldn’t hurt.
Xu Ke assumed it would be safer once they reached the building entrance, but reality quickly corrected him. The building looked equally insecure, with no door at the bottom to block entry, seemingly allowing anyone to walk in.
This time, the sisters proactively asked Xu Ke first.
"Could you escort us up? We live on the sixth floor, and there’s no elevator, plus the stairway lights aren’t working well. We’re a bit scared," Tangtang explained.
When Xu Ke stepped into the stairway, he realized the extent of the lighting issue. From the first to the sixth floor, not a single light worked properly. They either stayed dark, emitted a dim flickering light that almost blinded you, or blinked as if they were at a disco, almost causing eye strain. It was a frustrating sight.
After finally getting them to their door, Xu Ke heaved a sigh of relief, "Getting you home isn’t easy! The lights here are frightening. You two should try not to walk alone at night and avoid staying out late. You never know what might happen."
"Mm, we’ll remember that. My parents probably aren’t home yet; would you like to come in for some water? I noticed you haven’t had much all night and might be thirsty," Guoguo suggested.
Before Guoguo mentioned it, Xu Ke didn’t feel thirsty, but her words made him realize he was.
"Then I’ll take you up on your offer," Xu Ke replied with a smile.
"It’s no trouble, as long as you don’t mind," Guoguo replied.
Although their home was run-down, she and her sister kept it tidy. As long as their parents weren’t back, it stayed clean. Now, their parents would likely be out gambling, leaving them with a clean house and no reason to refuse Xu Ke entry, Guoguo thought, albeit nervously.
