Chapter 1009 - 1008: Scaring Himself
On the other side, after escaping from the room of sisters Tangtang and Guoguo, the man initially intended to flee back to his own home. However, halfway there, he stopped and, after contemplating for a moment, turned and walked towards Fourth Old Wu’s home.
Fourth Old Wu delayed on the road for a bit before he managed to return home. Once home, the first thing he did was bury himself completely under the covers, writhing on the bed like a giant worm. He unconsciously bit the blanket and his entire body shook uncontrollably.
His mind was entirely occupied with everything that had happened at Tangtang and Guoguo’s place, especially the image of them lying twisted on the ground, a scene replaying relentlessly in his head, almost driving him to madness.
Hiding under the covers, he felt intensely cold, a chill seeping from the depths of his body outward, a cold that no blanket could warm.
Huddled under the covers, he kept asking himself, why did things turn out this way? Given the chance, he would never let the sisters Tangtang and Guoguo get near the window again, nor give them any opportunity to harm him. He would act immediately, ensuring they had no chance whatsoever, even if their actions were against themselves—it wouldn’t be allowed.
Yes, even now as the man reflects on his actions, he doesn’t think he’s wrong. Or rather, he believes his mistake was underestimating Tangtang and Guoguo, not that their actions were fundamentally and outrageously wrong; it was their thoughts that were flawed and their actions following those thoughts were flawed.
But Fourth Old Wu doesn’t see it that way. Even as he wraps himself in the covers, shaking and reflecting on his behavior, his self-reflection is more about not being thorough enough, rather than acknowledging that the whole matter was wrong from the start. He truly doesn’t see any problem with bringing two brothers to intrude into Tangtang and Guoguo’s house and planning to assault them.
Because he delayed for so long on the road, it led to him not having stayed hidden long when the man, whom he and Third Young Master Hu had abandoned, found his home.
The man knocked on the door. Hidden in bed, Fourth Old Wu heard the knocking and trembled, his shaking growing more intense. He thought it was the spirits of Tangtang and Guoguo come for him.
His face under the covers instantly turned pale, and his lips lost their color, while his limbs grew cold. Terrified, he muttered to himself, and if listened carefully, it could be heard that he was reciting Buddhist scriptures.
But perhaps because he had simply heard the scriptures elsewhere, Fourth Old Wu’s chanting was disjointed and incomplete.
The man knocked on the door for a while but didn’t see anyone come out. So, he pulled out a small wire he carried with him and inserted it into the lock. With just a few simple pokes, the previously locked door opened easily.
The man entered Fourth Old Wu’s house.
His purpose wasn’t much, merely suspecting Fourth Old Wu was home but didn’t want to see him. He just wanted to come in to see if his suspicions were correct.
Standing at the doorway, he immediately saw a trembling lump on the bed. What else was unclear? Fourth Old Wu was indeed home but kept the door closed. Combining this with waking up alone at Tangtang and Guoguo’s situation, it was certain Fourth Old Wu had done something against him after he passed out; otherwise, he wouldn’t hide there.
With suspicions in his mind, the man walked step by step towards the bed. As he approached, his face was grim, seemingly as dark as a walking piece of coal.
Fourth Old Wu, hiding in bed, heard the footsteps getting closer, and his body trembled even more fiercely, almost vibrating. At that moment, he truly hated his keen hearing, which blessed him with talent in thievery, but now amplified his fear manifold.
Due to Fourth Old Wu’s house being small, even smaller than Tangtang and Guoguo’s rented room, it only took the man a few steps from the door to the bedside.
The man looked at Fourth Old Wu’s trembling body and reached out to pat him, and that touch caused trouble.
Hiding under the blanket, Fourth Old Wu suddenly felt a pat, and it seemed his blood froze, his heart stopping completely for a moment. It shook violently within his chest, causing pain, darkness in his eyes, and he fainted without even uttering a scream.
The man continued patting the lump under the covers, but seeing that it didn’t even shiver, and no one came out, his patience ran out. Instead of waiting for Fourth Old Wu to emerge, he simply lifted the blanket covering him.
Beneath the blanket, Fourth Old Wu’s face was already purplish-red due to lack of air, and the man’s action saved him at a crucial moment.
The man had come to confront Fourth Old Wu, but upon revealing the purple-red face, he was shocked, taking a moment to steady himself before checking for breath with trembling fingers.
Upon confirming Fourth Old Wu was still alive, the man relievedly exhaled deeply.
Good thing he wasn’t dead; if he were, explaining would be impossible.
However, seeing Fourth Old Wu’s peacefully unconscious state, the man grew increasingly curious about what transpired while he was out; certainly, something quite significant, or he wouldn’t have been scared into fainting.
