Chapter 73: Change the System
Chapter 73: Change the System
Stanley paused at the man’s words.
Change the system that has lasted for 100 years. He didn’t know why, but he kind of liked the sound of that. Not everything needed to be changed, but there were certainly some things that could use change.
’Is that what the female equality thing all was?’ he thought.
His sudden halt had clued the man in on the fact that he had some chance. "Su-surely you have some things that you want to change too right? Why not let me go? I can introduce you to the mayor and you can tell him what you want changed too," he said.
Stanley thought for a bit, holding tightly onto the man so he wouldn’t leave, and asked, "What sort of changes are we talking about?"
He wanted to learn some things before he fully even gave the thing any more thought.
"What sort of new system are you talking about? Can you be a little more specific?" he asked the man.
"Specific, huh? Let’s see," the man said and thought for a moment. "If we were to be successful and change the system, we most definitely won’t have a singular figure that controls everything like the mayor does."
Stanley’s eyes changed ever so slightly when he heard that. On one hand, he felt it was a good thing, but on the other, his brother was going to be the next mayor. Was he just going to lose his chance to be one?
The man didn’t notice that and continued. "After that, we will allow for the people to have a little more freedom in what they want to do and what they can do."
"Females, for example, will be allowed to join the Defenders too. There are girls with amazing powers that will be a lot of help. But somehow they always end up getting to do nothing. We will change that."
"Continue," Stanley said as his curiosity had been piqued.
"The current system allows for people who have a lot of money to live simply in the upper area, away from danger. We want to change that. The person who lives up there should not be decided based on money that can be passed down through generations."
"Instead, there should be an entirely new system, a more unbiased system that gives the person who deserves it that spot."
"Then there are the other matters that the Mayor hides for himself so that the others don’t learn about them. I mean, does anyone even know how this electricity works? How do the bulbs light up in our houses? How the colors are made? Or even just how the coins are kept from rusting."
"If we have a method that stops things from rusting, why are we not making more use of it? The mayor has been hiding a lot of knowledge for himself so we will have to rely on him. That we will change too."
"And the food. The food is stored in the mayor’s mansion. We never know how much he had. Even just a few days ago, he said he had enough food for everyone to not worry about. How come we didn’t know that sooner? Had we known, so many of us wouldn’t have stressed for months, eating tiny portions to save for the famine."
The man was truly angered it seemed, he had things to say. No wonder he had joined the group that was basically anti-mayor.
"If we have our own system, we can distribute the foods grown in the farms to everyone equally so that each person always knows how much they have," the man said.
Stanley had been agreeing to this man’s words. Even if he wasn’t fully in agreement with some tiny details here and there, overall he thought what they were trying to do was something decent.
It didn’t affect him much at all, so he didn’t care for either system, but seeing as how the new system could make some other people’s life easier, he wouldn’t be surprised if he found himself working towards these people’s cause.
However, there was a small bit of hesitation due to what the man had just said.
"You are going to equally distribute all food that comes from the farm?" he asked.
"Yes," the man said. "I mean, not fully equally. Maybe based on families and their compositions. We would have to look at age, gender—"
"I don’t care about those," Stanley said. "You said the food is going to come from the farm. Who is going to grow it?"
"Who?" the man seemed confused. "Who else? Those Dulls, of course."
Stanley’s hands tightened into a fist. "Your new system won’t count the Dulls as equals?" he asked.
"Why should we? They are Dulls," the man said before looking at Stanley. He saw Stanley’s angry eyes and realized his mistakes.
"I-I-I mean that can be done too. The Dulls can be integrated into the society," the man quickly said
Stanley scoffed. "You only wish to upgrade your own standing, don’t you?" he asked. "You don’t care what happens to the others. As long as you get something out of it, you are happy."
Stanley spoke the words at the man, but deep down it felt as if he was speaking at himself.
"You’re not someone trying to change the system. You’re someone trying to benefit from one while still keeping the others oppressed. I am disgusted to think there are people like you behind this resistance," Stanley said. "You all need to be stopped."
Stanley remembered the man who wanted to change the system because it was the one that took away his son’s life. That man had a reason to do it all that in Stanley’s opinion was far better than what this man was trying to do.
’It should be obvious that not everyone in a group of many people can be a good person,’ he thought to himself. ’But if everyone is like this, then this group definitely deserves what is coming for them tonight.’
