Chapter 590: Better Potion Quality
Chapter 590: Better Potion Quality
While this was happening, Clark was able to begin understanding other facets of alchemy that he had been ignorant to. The degree in which the fumes could cause issues. However, while he was thinking, he overheard a comment that Ella made.
"The fumes from this might be able to be condensed in to a new position. I wonder if it would be a gaseous poison or if it can be condensed fully in to a poison or acid…" her theories were written in small notes that Maria could explore later.
Yet, when Clark began to think about this, he wondered if this was some magical infinite potion glitch in the fabric of time and space. If they managed to save all the fumes and remake them in to different potions, it could save them a lot of effort. However, they could then do the same to the potion materials saved from the previous potions. It could go on forever.
Regardless, this was still a good way to make weaker products from one potion creation. The alchemical process would just need to change and be adapted as things went. "I was wondering what else this could be used for. Where would we change the formula?"
As Clark asked this question, he saw Ella and Maria look at him. The two had glanced from their work long enough to tell him that they had already thought of this and had some idea.
"The venom can be used or we could replace it with mushrooms we found on the way. The brown mushrooms with dusty caps make spores that will make someone more susceptible to dehydration. If we add those to the potion, then we will make a potion that will make them slowly lose water and sweat more. It's a very bad poison to use against those that are traveling without a lot of water. Or we could add-"
"I see, so it is a base for what else we could make then? That's the benefit of the binding formula for potions? It could make something like mushroom spores usable in a poison or potion?" Clark cut Ella off since he knew that she would list a hundred reasons and methods if he didn't she knew he wasn't trying to be mean either.
"We aren't making that right now. Can you get me the widows mint over there?" Maria was not letting Clark take them off topic. She was fully focused on the herbs they had collected and what she needed.
'Widow's mint- uncommon
The widows mint is a species of mint herb that was accidentally cross bred with a poisonous herb that the black widow spider beast enjoys to consume. Due to this, it is a toxic herb until it is heated. When heated, it becomes a very delightful aromatic.
The other ulterior effect of it, is that it bleeds out an oil that attracts dirt when it is heated. Therefore, in alchemy, it is an ideal condensing herb. It will help remove all impurities that attach themselves to herbs. Especially dried dust from dry earth environments.
It is ideal to use these in other forms of cooking as well if there is a potential for dirty produce or rough cooking environments.'
Clark found this herb to be interesting. "Just be careful not to eat it like mint. It might seem the same but if you put that in your mouth you will get a brutal nosebleed." Maria warned Clark and he understood that this was a very dangerous herb if it could make someone bleed enough that they might die from it.
As Maria was still dripping in alternating between venom and pure water, Clark tossed in the small bunch of widows mint. The moment it touched the potion which had begun boiling violently again, there was a clearing.
The dark color condensed and then the potion was much clearer. Clark saw that the widows mint fell to the bottom of the cauldron with plenty of impurities attached to it. They were all the things that would have made the potion very poor tasting. The additional impurities would also drastically lower the quality. Many alchemists learned the different herbs to remove impurities like this one.
"We can't use too much of the widows mint if we want to make more of these. It doesn't grow here because it is too warm." Ella made it clear that they would not be able to find this herb anywhere. So that also was a signal that they would have a limited antidote if they were bitten by the jungle spiders living near and on the banana trees.
Ella had made sure that they would all understand that they would face a shortage of such potions. But Maria just kept her focus on the potion itself. When she saw that the temperature had waned, she made a motion for the blaze elemental to help it heat even more. But this process was not a stable one. The temperature had to rise and lower as she needed.
Without thinking, Maria stopped adding the venom and water. Her hands directly touched the flames and Clark wanted to pull her back. However, he saw a curious occurrence. Maria was not harmed at all. In actuality, the energy from her body was flowing out of her and in to the flames causing the potion to change color yet again.
'You're using the energy from your beast which in turn is influencing the quality of the potion. Lit is even providing unique spiritual energy to help your new partner in return since you are siphoning off some energy. Amazing. That is the first exchange between your spirit beast and the beast maturing in your taming space. Very unique." Ella's praise made Isa and Clark open their eyes wider.
Such an exchange of energy happened without any communication. It was purely off feeling for Maria to act and finish the potion while Lit reacted instinctively as well. The two had moved because their bonds were just that deep.
Since Lit had always been beside Maria and even took the royal cloak form often since Maria had helped Lit grow, the two could move without communication. Their bond wasn't even needed to be able to work perfectly in unison. It was something that transcended what most people would rely on the bond between their partner to do. A truly immense trust that many people would not be able to reach.
"There it is. We have it all finished." Maria moved back and leaned on the table set up with a few herbs still left over. She looked a bit pale since she had used energy that was meant for her beast. Therefore, she had to use her own energy so that she could supplement Lit and then her new beast in the cocoon.
The midnight eel was moving in and out of the shadows around her with clear worry on her face.
"Here, have some water." Clark handed her some healing water from his taming space. He was sure that tin would help a lot. His eyes focused on the potion that Isa and Ella had begun to help cool using their beasts.
The cloud sprite pulling out some of the ambient moisture that the potion did not need while Isa had her blaze elemental absorb the fire energy to reduce the temperature in a controlled manner.
'Jungle spider antidote- rare
The quality is much higher because of the unique energies used when creating this potion. Therefore, it has gained a rare quality instead of an uncommon. This is able to cure any jungle spider venom that is affecting someone as long as it is applied to the wound and or drank within a certain time of infection.
This potion will also help with other varieties of spiders as long as their venoms are not as toxic as the cannibal jungle spider that was providing venom for this potion to be made.
The ulterior usage of this poison is that it can be used to treat some of the most basic of itching rashes caused from the orange tarantula hairs that live within the jungle. They are normally not aggressive but their hairs will cause a rash that itches to deter predators..'
Clark took the journal back up that Ella had been using. He slowly wrote everything about this potion out. He was glad to help with the appraisal of it and knew that when the girls finished their work that they would be very surprised to see what he had written down.
For the time being, he was looking at the system and waiting to see if this all registered as complete for the quests. Realistically, it was a decent few hours and the moon was high in the sky since they had been working in to the night while in their camp. But to Clark, it felt like they had barely just started resting here a few minutes ago.
Both the forging process and the alchemy process had been incredibly interesting. He had learned a lot as well.
