Chapter 187: Annoying Family Matters
Chapter 187: Annoying Family Matters
"So, you failed to mention that the Cain family has made marriage proposals to you." Clark managed to catch Isa before Maria did. He had to take the chance to tease her just a little bit.
"As a member of the Rolly family, many people propose to myself and my brothers. They want the trade that comes with my family name. Even the most inexperienced merchant could make it big if they had my last name. The only issue is that my family prefers not to help one another unless it is on equal terms."
The Rolly family was very respectable. Family and business were separated. It was why Clark found them to be one of the more respectable families. The Green family was naturally the second in line since they had freedom to strengthen their own paths instead of using the same methods over and over. They value freedom and equality.
"I think it's how any big family has to lie. Everyone wants their name and no one cares how they get it. They would even trick someone in to a marriage if they could. There are only a few families that do not marry for power." Maria was disgusted by all of this talk which made Clark privy to the way that the Mourne family traditionally did things.
"If that's the case, then why did they let a potential bride like you leave? Did they really think you were too weak?" This was the monkey wrench in the motor that Clark had found. Maria would have still been a useful tool to attract a powerful male to join the family.
"Even so, I was considered useless. They wanted me to be more powerful to attract the top of the city's strengths. I did not have that so they would have sent me away to live with another family. Pointless." This explained the political game a little more than Clark expected but it was good information.
"Wow, that guy is already back on his feet glaring at us. Maybe we should leave. Everyone just wave goodbye." Clark saw the boy had been healed very quickly. His toxic toad still had severe burns but not him. The healers and prioritized his wellness over his beasts.
"Who cares? I should have burned him to nothing so that I could be free of him. Now he will try and get in our way." The bitterness that Isa had was completely about the fact that she would have more problems to handle due to the Cain family. Talong down one of the promising youths that was planning to marry in to theory family did that sort of thing.
"You are a little more hot headed today." Clark was a little impressed to hear that Isa could get this fired up even though she had easily won her match.
"She just doesn't like when other people try and contain her. Have you not seen how happy Isa is when she is able to branch out and do her own thing?" Clark thought back with Maria's point of view. It was always when she had something unique and new to try and buy or sell that Isa became too excited.
"You might be right. Isa always becomes like a dog with a bone when she sees something she might be able to sell. It's pretty impressive how different she is in comparison. Business Isa versus normal person Isa." Clark finished with a laugh but narrowly avoided a punch sent his way from Isa who did not want to be the hot topic to tease.
"You both know that we have to get back to the lab with Ella, right? If we aren't ready then Alexander and Doc will punish us. They are pretty high ranking. It's better that they are rewarding us, you know." Maria laughed a little too because she couldn't find Isa scary no matter what face Isa made.
With a little encouragement, the three made it back to the lab only to find that it was no longer just a lab. There were mountains of books here and there while Isa had brought out a sizeable hoard of personal journals.
"Oh, you are back. Starting from that pile to there, you can look through my journals. Most of these are copies of beast knowledge and past plans that I used to copy for memorization. After that are four piles from the family library that I am allowed to take. The last poles are what I have copied from the student library. I have nearly full access.
You may learn some good things."
"Umm, how did you get all this here?" Isa wasn't sure how Ella had managed so much. Even the storage rings they had would not properly store some of these books. They were too old or were potentially too delicate.
"I had some other students help me. Doc gave me his crest so that I could properly recruit students to help. They all received a small reward from him and I got my books, journals, and a few other things here for us to use." Ella had a monstrous smile on her face. The entire group knew that the next few hours would be harsh studying whether they wanted to or not.
Meanwhile…
"You can't seriously expect them to give a perfect beast evaluation to a city lord. That is outrageous." The growl that escaped from one man's lips was enough to make the entire room full of tension.
"And are you saying that as a general? You do not support the youth of our city. It is very disappointing General Mourne." The taunting tone came from none other than General Mane. he had been called to prepare for the Star city lord's arrival.
"Both of you children need to realize that the city lord is bringing his children here. They are getting beast evaluations. You understand that his children are very young. Correct? They will be the generation that can bond with our city and unite Star city residents with our residents. Potentially creating a streamlined trade route."
The only female general at the table was the outlier of the city that had more powerful men in high positions because of how the city had developed over time. But the woman did not budge and held the peace. "General Green, we understand that you wish to see this relationship grow. However, there is more that this weighs on."
The other nobles at this meeting tried to reason with the Generals. Unfortunately, things were not as easy. "Let them have their opinion. Whether anyone here is happy or unhappy does not concern Nova academy. Three of the most powerful tamers in the city, including myself, will be there to support these four young ones." Alexander naturally had a right to be at this table.
He had helped bring Nova academy to be the grand academy it was today.
"That means that the Rolly family young lady, the Green family young lady, the unknown commoner, and the Mourne family young lady will all make a name for themselves. That should make many in the city very happy. Unless there were some reasons why someone would not feel happy about that." Alexander clearly taunted General Mourne. However, with his words and the aura he had, no one argued.
The meeting ended shortly after.
