Chapter 139 139: Ch 139: A Cause to Celebrate
"Patience is a virtue you seem to be sorely lacking, my dear puppet. But I am happy to see that you managed to find the kid you were so desperately looking for."
The doctor told her with a small smile on his face. But something about that smile felt dangerous to the female puppet. Her instincts told her that she should not let her guard down.
The younger puppet behind her had already turned his face away so that he did not have to see the look on her face or the knowing grin on the doctor's.
"I will let you go back to your section now. But I do hope you decide to stop by my labs one of these days. I have an…experiment I could use your help with."
The doctor told the puppet in his disturbing voice before he left her alone.
She kept her eyes on the doctor until he disappeared all the way behind the wall. And only after he was gone did she relax and allow her body to lose all the tension…for now.
"He feels so creepy. That doctor is bad news."
The female puppet spoke softly, and the male puppet nodded as he followed his elder back home.

"Hooray, we survived another game. Let's eat well and have a lot of fun."
Clara cheered as she brought up her glass of beer. It was freshly brewed, so it did not have a lot of flavour, but she had not wanted to get old beer out for something like this.
Everyone else took a sip as well as they settled down for dinner, and the mood turned lighter around the table as everyone spoke softly and gossiped about things.
Andrew watched this all happen with a fond look on his face.
"Here, you should drink some as well. You look rather lonely standing here all alone like this."
Lilianna brought him a glass of beer, and she took a sip out of her own glass. Her eyes looked fond as she looked down from where she was standing.
"You know, I never expected to have such close bonds with anyone. I was…never a loner, but I never belonged anywhere either…until I met you and Clara. I feel like I can keep going as long as I have you all."
Lilianna spoke in a happy voice.
This was the first time she had ever admitted something like this, and it made her feel a lot more at ease once she did.
But Andrew remained silent for a while. His eyes looked at Lilianna with a calm gaze, and she sensed loneliness and even a hint of pity in them.
"I am flattered that you think that. However, do not get so attached that you are not able to function if anything were to happen to any of us. We all have gotten lucky in these games so far, but disaster needs no signal to strike."
Andrew reminded her as he held up his glass of beer. It reflected Mark's face back at him, and he felt a little vexed by his own reflection.
He no longer recalled what he used to look like before he became Mark.
His somber words hit Lilianna hard, and she opened and closed her mouth, wanting to say more but not being able to. She had no idea what she could even say in such a situation to make it better.
"Awww, don't be so gloomy. This is a moment to celebrate. Come, have a drink…"
Clara appeared out of nowhere, and her flushed face betrayed her drunkenness. She tried to reach for Andrew, but he dislodged her, and she pouted before heading for Lilianna instead.
"Alright, you are coming with me now. Let's go and make some memories."
She spoke as she dragged Lilianna behind her. Poor Lilianna did not even get a chance to protest before she was dragged away.
Andrew watched it all with a fond smile on his face. But it did not take long for Seraphina to occupy Lilianna's empty space.
"They all look so happy. In a way, I cannot help but feel envious of them. We never got to experience such a thing with our people."
Her words brought back memories in Andrew's mind.
He had not thought about Arcana yet, but as soon as Seraphina had mentioned their home, memories of past struggles hit his mind.
"Andrew, what would you do if you had a chance to revive Arcana but had to sacrifice everything you have right now? Would you take that opportunity?"
Seraphina asked without any hesitation. Her words sounded like they were more than a hypothetical question.
"If you had to give up all your morals but, in return, you got a chance to retrieve all you have lost, would you take it?"
Seraphina continued to ask, and there was a time Andrew would have told her yes without hesitation.
But right now, he felt conflicted, and he was not even sure why he felt like this. The whole reason he had risked his life and soul was to get revenge against the system for Arcana.
"…Never mind. It was not a question worth asking anyway. After all, you are human now. So it's for the best that you live like a human as well. There might be no place left for you on Arcana, even if you did somehow return there."
Seraphina laughed to lighten the situation, but Andrew felt like she was giving up on something.
"I might be human now, but part of my soul is Arcanan. I will never forget that place, nor forsake it."
He assured Seraphina, and she let out a smile. It was not bright, nor did it reach her eyes. It was just a sad, almost familiar stretch of her face.
"I see. Anyway, I will go and drink more as well now. You should get Emperor. He should enjoy all this as well."
Seraphina reminded Andrew before she walked away to join the others.
'I doubt human alcohol would work on you…'
He wanted to tell Seraphina, but in the end, he decided not to, and he turned around to get Emperor inside as well.
