Chapter 283 The Bomb On The Porch Detonated

The butler blinked. "There’s a riot outside the Reed family house right now. Robert Figueroa wouldn’t take such a risk."

Kelsie pursed her lips. "Think about it. He’s the face of the military in Lioren, so he has skills. Would it be entirely out of question if he suddenly emerges out of the house with Emily Hughes?"

"He wants to be seen as a hero by the people. Even if it doesn’t make sense, all he has to do is feed them some untrue story about how he got in and they’d be lapping it up like dogs."

Molly and the butler found sense in her words, but then...

He raised his head and strutted to the door. He stood around for a few seconds before he waltzed out.

Thanks to the creaking boards, they could hear where he was until he walked back Iinto the room.

"It doesn’t make sense. Why would he leave everything intact if he was going to leave this place?"

Molly leaned against the wall again, folding her arms across her chest as she casually remarked, "Who knows why that creep does the things he does?"

"For all it’s worth, it could be that he knew we were coming and is patiently waiting for us. Perhaps this is even a trap."

She was merely complaining because she wanted to leave the place as soon as possible, but Kelsie and the butler suddenly sprang up.

She naturally did the same, watching them inch toward her in confusion.

"What is it? Did I say something to annoy you?"

Kelsie’s throat tightened as she glanced between them. "There’s a camera watching us. Why would he put a camera here if he was expecting us?"

"Or let’s say he’s surveying us, we’ve been here long enough for one of his hounds to get to us, so why hasn’t he?"

Molly scratched the side of her eye. "I don’t know. You’re the smart one—why don’t you tell me?"

The butler clenched his jaw, naturally arriving at the same conclusion Kelsie had silently reached.

Molly immediately sensed something amiss and leaned closer toward them. "What is it now? I’m not that dull, so why do I keep missing something in this instance?"

Kelsie closed the distance between them, standing so close to them that she had to start whispering, "If I’m right, then he knew we were coming and planned ahead."

"Given his hatred for my mother, how likely is it that he would’ve rigged the entire cabin with explosives before leaving?"

Molly’s eyes widened. "Too likely!"

The butler seethed, "That bastard! Ms. Sutton is a mother of three, does he have no conscience, trying to kill her?"

Molly thinned her lips. "Best bet? He plans to send them her way after he’s done with us."

Kelsie glared at her.

While the butler quickly came up with a plan. "Ms. Sutton, he can’t know we’ve figured out his plan. So we’re going to go in different directions, like we did earlier. Then once you’re outside, you make a run for it."

The plan was made, and the three of them split up.

Beneath the boards in the living room, kitchen, toilet, and porch, the timer went off, counting backward from twenty seconds.

Unaware of these locations, the trio spent ten seconds surveying the house again before Kelsie heard something.

She was already outside when she stopped and walked back to the porch, her eyes narrowing as she tried to figure out what the sound was.

As the countdown continued, in front of the Reed family’s house, Maxwell Kensington was getting ready to step out of the car.

"Switch places with the driver," he said curtly Colton Reed boy before alighting.

The crowd outside was busy pummeling the guards and barely noticed his arrival.

Taking advantage of the chaos, he blended in by picking up a board and asking one of them, "What is happening?"

Several answers came from the aggravated crowd as they yelled one after the other, "They kidnapped Emily Hughes! And instead of letting us take a pound of flesh, they’re hiding her inside. They deserve death!"

"If we don’t get justice, we’ll burn this house to the ground!"

"Burn the Reed family house!"

Relieved that no one recognized him, he was about to step forward when a young man from the crowd approached him with a phone.

"Mr. Figueroa wants you to have this."

Maxwell didn’t react. Instead, he spat, "Tell your boss that if he releases Emily Hughes to me, I’ll show him leniency when the people begin asking for his blood."

However, the man merely grabbed his wrist and pushed the phone into his palm, hissing, "He says you’re not in a position to make demands."

Maxwell’s eys darkened.

He wasn’t?

The Figueroa family couldn’t hold a candle to him. He was always in a position to make demands.

He was about to toss the phone away when his eyes caught the image on the screen and the air caught in his throat.

Though she had a face cap pulled over her head, she was staring directly at the camera the phone was recording from.

His hands trembled.

Kelsie?

Did she follow him here? He told her she’d take care of matters here, why on earth would she follow him here?

As he stood rooted to the spot, barely able to keep himself standing, the phone in his pocket began buzzing, and he quickly pulled it out.

The moment he answered, Robert’s gloating voice came through. "Look how beautiful your daughter is. Too bad she’s not long for this world."

"Figueroa, you prick! Touch even a strand of hair on her head and I will make sure you..." Maxwell’s grip on the phone tightened and he was on the verge of threatening him when the camera suddenly went blank.

He tried to turn it back on, thinking the screen had simply gone dark.

Listening to him struggle, Robert cackled.

"Did the phone’s screen to go off? That must be because the bomb on the porch detonated."
