Chapter 271 Whose Fiancé?
Chapter 271 Whose Fiancé?
This wasn’t his first time handling a weapon. Hence, he was very adept at it and easily had the pistol pointed at the spot he was sure would make Jett bleed out and die if shot.
Squinting one eye, he began to squeeze the trigger... but just then, a foot came out of nowhere and slammed it down.
The loud noise as the gun hit the ground and slid under a table caught everyone’s attention.
Turning their heads toward the source of the noise, they were taken aback to see two young men glaring at each other with hostility.
"You two have no respect. How did you even get an invite here?"
"Security, throw these boys out. When they’ve learned some manners, they can come right back in!"
A few members of the Adler family screamed at them.
Thanks to the distraction, Jett and the triplets were able to reach Selene Arthur unnoticed by the guests.
Kelsie, on the other hand, walked with them for a bit before stopping and narrowing her eyes at Colton.
That suit... it looked like the one she’d seen earlier, the one with a pistol tucked behind it. But then again, it wasn’t the only color of suit at the party.
Telling him to turn around for no reason would simply be too much to ask.
"My apologies. My friend here isn’t very good with a crowd. We’ll be taking our leave now. I apologize once again on his behalf," Serbian said, squeezing out the words and lowering his head in apology.
Without waiting for a response, he reached out and grabbed Colton’s hand, tugging him toward the door.
Colton stared at him coldly, attempting to pry his hand away, but Serbian only tightened his grip.
Once they were outside, the gentleness Serbian had displayed a moment ago instantly vanished.
He roughly shoved Colton against the wall, pressing his wrist against the man’s neck as he shouted, "You’re not here on some important matter by your Reed family, are you?"
Colton stared down at him cooly, growing increasingly irritated at the realization that he couldn’t push him off.
"What is it to you? Your Howard family will have a better time progressing if you stop sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong."
Serbian stared at him stoically, his eyes narrowing coldly. "I still bear the Howard name, but I’m no longer part of that family, so I don’t give a damn what your Reed family does to them."
"However, I will take offense, and I will hunt your stupid ass down if you so much as point a finger at Kelsie Sutton’s face!"
Colton’s pupils dilated in surprise but not at the fact that Serbian had mistaken his target.
"What? How do you know Kelsie Sutton?"
Serbian gritted his teeth, "That has nothing to do with you."
Colton frowned, both his hands grabbing a hold of Serbian’s collar to squeeze it hard.
"Of course it does. As her fiancé, it’s my duty to know every man in her life. And if you’re one of them, I expect you to tell me what’s been going on in her life. If not for anything but for old times’ sake."
Serbian was taken aback hearing him refer to Kelsie as his fiancée and quickly assumed he had also fallen for her charms like he did.
Hence, he scoffed irritably, "Don’t flatter yourself. The only fiancé she’s ever had is Jett Adler and you don’t stand a chance. They already even have children together."
Colton’s pupils dilated again and his grip on Serbian’s collar tightened.
"Hold on a moment and explain carefully. You’re saying my fiancée has children with this Jett Adler?"
Serbian paused, noticing how Colton’s eyes, which had been full of irritation a second ago, now held a little angst.
"I’m missing something. Tell me what it is," he said instead of answering.
In that moment, his grip on Colton loosened, and the man easily pried his hand off.
Adjusting his collar, Colton warned without lifting his head, "If you won’t say anything, then It’s been a pleasure meeting you again, Serbian."
"But next time you see me trying to do something, do yourself a favor and look the other way. It won’t do you any good to be caught in the middle of a ceasefire."
Then he turned to leave.
He had just taken two steps forward when Serbian’s brain suddenly connected the dots and he blurted out impulsively.
"If Kelsie is your fiancée... then you weren’t gunning for her. Then... could it be you were gunning for..."
He trailed off abruptly, barely reacting in time to shield his head as Colton suddenly swirled around, his foot raised high up in the air and rapidly approaching his face.
In Lioren, it was mandatory for heirs and heiresses to learn martial arts. Not because they were always under threat, but because they needed to stay alert lest they be taken out by a casual rival heir.
It was a competitive place where the strong didn’t hesitate to eat the weak. Even if someone was weak, they still learned martial arts to hide it.
It was an essentia survival skill for every one of them.
Serbian knew this. So he wasn’t beating himself up too much for not reacting on time. But he also knew something else:
If Colton really hit him, he’d...
"Aren’t you strong, bullying such a weak link?"
Just as Colton’s foot touched his head, a voice hissed in disdain from behind him.
Whoever it was seemed to throw Colton off course, as he paused and slowly lowered his eyes.
"You’re not dead?"
"Disappointed?"
This time, Serbian narrowed his eyes, realizing the voice was a little familiar.
Colton slipped both hands into his pockets, snickering, "Yes. But not because you’re alive. I’m disappointed because now I have to take care of everything myself."
Molly chuckled, "Aren’t you a cheeky little thing?"
"Neither you nor Luca will ever return to Lioren. I’d rather die before that happens." Colton didn’t take her seriously and lazily looked around.
Molly shrugged. "Then die you will."
His lips twitched in amusement.
He had grown up with Molly but had never gotten the opportunity to throw hands with her.
Unfortunately for her, a desperate man like him didn’t care much for honor in a fight.
Even if it meant fighting a woman, he planned to employ the most gruesome methods to get it done.
"Before we begin, don’t you think it would be easier heading down a cliff... head first?"
She immediately scoffed, "Oh, me? Don’t be ridiculous, Colton. If anything, this is the birthday party of my cousin’s grandmother-in-law. It would be plain disrespect to engage in a fight right outside the event."
"How thoughtful of you to go out without a fight. At least this will be fast and..." His eyes, which had just squinted as he regarded her closely, suddenly froze, widening in alarm as he felt a coarse hand snake around his neck.
He moved, only to feel cold metal press against the back of it.
"It’s not a gun," the voice said calmly. "Just an incredibly sharp knife which could slit your neck if you try to surprise me."
It wasn’t Luca Langford.
But if it wasn’t him... who was it?
The uncertainty made it difficult to gauge the man’s skill, and judging from how calm Molly remained, she really trusted he’d carry out his threat.
Befoee him, Serbian exchanged a quiet glance with her.
He recognized Molly. Who he didn’t recognize was the man holding Colton in place.
Not only was he not one of Luca’s usual men, he didn’t even look like anyone Luca would protect himself with.
And that large coat... had he come here pretending to be a butler?
Swallowing hard, Colton temporarily resigned to fate and tried to reason with her again.
"Jett Adler can’t protect Kelsie, you know that. So instead of doing this, have your hound go in there and kill him. Only when Kelsie is with me will she be safe from the vultures in Lioren."
Molly ignored him and strutted toward the hall, quietly creeping in.
Inside, Jett made the children stand behind Selene while he and Kelsie stood at her sides, with Daniel behind them.
It was the perfect formation. Besides, the guests were too preoccupied by the sudden sight of them to notice how odd it looked.
"Dad, Jett even dares to come with her on a day like this? Guess the next thing he’ll do? That’s right! He’ll bring her children and completely disrespect you!" Craig’s holler as he pointed an accusing finger at Jett were the firdt words they heard.
Behind Selene, Zade paused, gently squeezing Jesse’s shoulders as he ’whispered’, "Since when does Daddy bringing us in front of Great-Grandfather count as disrespecting him? I don’t like this man’s tone."
"Tell me about it. He’s one rude old man. If anything, he’s the one disrespecting Great-Grandfather!"
"You guys... do you think we should call him out for saying such foul things about Daddy and Grandfather?"
While the triplets thought they were being sneaky, whispering in low voices, they failed to notice the room had suddenly grown silent.
In front of them. Selene Arthur slowly turned toward the childish voices in surprise.
