Chapter 209
Chapter 209
The battlefield of Marineford stood still for a single moment.
After all the blood. After all the screams. After all the impossible battles, Monkey D. Luffy had done it.
He had reached the execution platform. He had crossed the war.
He had broken through Admirals, Vice Admirals, giants, legends, and fate itself.
And now he stood before Ace. Breathing heavily. Covered in blood. Half-conscious.
Barely standing. But smiling.
That same reckless smile. The same one he always had. The same one Ace hated and loved.
Luffy looked at him. Tears in his eyes. Relief flooding through every part of him.
He laughed. Almost disbelieving.
"Finally…"
He took another breath. Still smiling.
"Finally!"
He clenched his fists. Voice shaking. Happy. Exhausted. Victorious.
"I made it!"
Ace stared at him. Bound. Bruised. Speechless. Because after everything, after all the pain his little brother had really come. He had come all the way to hell for him.
Ace's voice cracked. Soft. Almost trembling.
"…Luffy…"
He looked at him. Still unable to fully process it.
"You're so…"
He stopped. Because there were no words for this. Only emotion. Only guilt. Only love.
Luffy grinned wider. Like this was simple.
Like this was obvious. Like there had never been another outcome.
"Let's get you out of here!"
Behind them Sengoku had finally had enough. His patience. Gone. His authority. Challenged. His execution. Ruined.
His fury exploded.
"DO YOU THINK—"
His voice thundered across Marineford. The battlefield shook.
"—I'LL JUST LET YOU DO AS YOU PLEASE?!"
Golden light erupted from his body. Blinding.
Divine. Terrifying.
His form expanded. Bones cracked. Power surged.
The Fleet Admiral transformed into his Buddha form. Massive. Overwhelming. A living god of war. Even the battlefield seemed smaller before him.
Sengoku glared down at them. Like judgment itself.
"You cannot escape me!"
His giant palm rose. Shadows swallowing both brothers.
"BOTH OF YOU WILL DIE HERE!"
But Luffy ignored him. Completely. Because he had one goal. Only one.
He reached into his pocket desperately searching. His fingers found it. The key.
The key to Ace's seastone cuffs.
The one secretly given to him by Hancock.
The final piece. The final step.
Luffy pulled it out. Holding it up. Victory in his hand.
Sengoku's eyes widened. For the first time true disbelief.
"How the hell…"
His voice sharpened. Anger becoming suspicion.
"…do you have THAT?!"
Even Kizaru looked up. Glasses reflecting the light. Calm voice. Dangerous.
"Oh my…"
A slow whistle.
"I can't believe you even have something like that, Straw Hat."
His finger rose. Light gathering. A laser forming. Its target, not Luffy. Not Ace. The key. Because if the key died, hope died.
Luffy's eyes widened.
Too late. Too far. Too exhausted.
But then—
BOOM.
A fist slammed into Kizaru's face. Violent.
Heavy. Brutal.
The Admiral was sent flying. Crashing across the battlefield. Smoke erupted and standing there grinning like a beast was Douglas Bullet.
Bullet rolled his shoulders. Completely unbothered. Smirking.
"I was getting bored."
He cracked his neck. Eyes sharp. Savage.
"That ice bastard was too weak."
Far away Aokiji sighed. Annoyed. Cold air rising.
"…How rude."
Back on the execution platform, Sengoku attacked. His giant hand came crashing down. Enough force to destroy the platform itself. Enough to erase both brothers instantly.
Luffy reacted. Pure instinct. Pure desperation.
"GOMU GOMU NO—"
His body inflated instantly. Massive. Round. Shield-like.
"BALLOON!!"
His rubber body expanded taking the full force of Sengoku's punch. The impact exploded across Marineford.
The execution stand cracked. Then shattered. Wood. Stone. Steel. Everything collapsed beneath them. The platform broke apart.
The brothers fell. Downward. Into fire. Into chaos. Into war. But while falling, Luffy moved. Fast. Certain.
He reached for Ace's cuffs. The key trembling in his hand and finally he inserted it.
CLICK.
Unlocked. Freedom. At last.
And then—
BOOM.
A barrage of Marine cannons fired directly at them. The explosion swallowed everything.
Fire erupted skyward. Smoke covered the plaza. The battlefield screamed.
Ivankov's eyes widened. Pure panic.
"STRAWBOY!!!"
Jinbe looked up. Frozen. Voice breaking.
"No way…"
The pirates screamed.
"ACE!!"
"LUFFY!!"
Buggy pointed in horror. Completely panicking. "They both got hit?!"
Even Mihawk looked. Watching silently.
Calm. Sharp. His thoughts colder than his expression.
So much drama…
A pause. Almost amused.
Can't they even use their Haki?
His eyes narrowed. Certain.
They're both still alive.
And then from inside the flames, something moved. A tunnel of fire opened. Parting.
Breaking. Like fire itself was making way.
And through it walked Ace. Alive. Free. Carrying Luffy over his shoulder. Like an older brother should. Like he always had. Like he always would.
Ace stepped forward. Flames dancing around him. His cuffs gone. His hands free.
His will unbroken.
He smirked. Finally himself again. Finally free.
"You've always been like this, Luffy…"
He looked down at him. Half annoyed.
Half emotional. Completely brotherly.
"Always doing insane things…"
Silence. Then the world exploded. Because everyone saw it.
The Marines.
The pirates.
The warlords.
The world watching from Sabaody.
Everyone.
Portgas D. Ace was free.
The pirates erupted. Cheers louder than cannon fire. Hope stronger than fear.
"ACE IS FREE!!"
"HE DID IT!"
"STRAWHAT DID IT!"
Jinbe smiled. Relieved. Proud.
"Ace…"
He looked at Luffy too. Warmly.
"Luffy-kun…"
Hancock placed a hand over her chest. Tears almost forming. Softly with relief.
"…I'm so glad."
Ivankov laughed wildly. Hands in the air.
Dramatic as ever.
"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!"
A spin. A pose. Tears.
"HE REALLY DID IT!"
The Marines stood frozen. Horrified.
Because this was the worst possible outcome.
The son of Roger freed.
The war failing.
Their justice breaking.
And from the center of it all, Edward Newgate watched and smiled.
A deep. Proud. Satisfied smile.
"Gurararara…"
A low laugh. A father's pride.
"Well done… brat."
Luffy looked up. Still smiling. Still exhausted.
Still alive and screamed with all the joy left in him.
"ACEEEEE!!!"
And for the first time since the war began, hope won.
—————————
The war had changed. The impossible had happened.
Portgas D. Ace was free.
And now the two brothers stood together in the middle of Marineford.
Back to back.
Surrounded by enemies. Surrounded by fire.
Surrounded by war. But smiling. Because for the first time since this nightmare began they were fighting side by side again.
Marines flooded the plaza. From every direction. Rifles raised. Swords drawn.
Cannons repositioned. Vice Admirals shouting orders. No one intended to let them leave alive.
"DON'T LET THEM ESCAPE!"
"Kill them here!"
"Take down Fire Fist Ace!"
"Straw Hat too!"
Ace cracked his neck. Rolled his shoulders.
Flames slowly rising from his body. His eyes sharpened.
Calm. Confident. Dangerous.
He stepped forward. Fire gathering in his fist and smirked.
"Flame Commandment!"
He swung and hell followed. A massive wall of fire erupted forward consuming the front lines of Marines instantly. The flames roared across the battlefield like a living beast.
Soldiers screamed. Ranks broke. Weapons melted. The heat alone forced everyone back.
"AAAAHHHH!"
"FIRE!"
"GET BACK!"
The Marines were blasted away. Thrown across the plaza. The entire battlefield lit orange. Smoke rising. Chaos spreading.
Luffy laughed. Excited. Relieved. Happy. Because this felt right. This was how it was supposed to be.
Ace landed beside him.
The two brothers standing shoulder to shoulder. Backs touching. No fear. Only trust.
The Marines hesitated. Even they could feel it. The danger. The chemistry. The storm these two created together.
"Be careful!"
One Marine shouted desperately.
"They're dangerous!"
Ace glanced sideways. At Luffy. At his little brother. Covered in bruises. Covered in blood. Still standing. Still smiling. Still insane.
Ace shook his head. Half disbelief. Half pride. "…Can you still fight, Luffy?"
Luffy grinned instantly. Like it was the dumbest question ever asked.
"Of course I can!"
He cracked his fists. Laughing.
"I came all the way here for this!"
Nearby pirates from Whitebeard's fleet watched and cheered. Louder than before.
Because hope was alive now. Because Ace was alive. Because the brothers stood together.
"THAT'S IT!"
"ACE!"
"STRAWHAT!"
"GET OUT OF HERE!"
"RUN!"
Even Whitebeard's commanders smiled.
Marco laughed.
Vista grinned.
Jozu roared.
Because this was what they had all fought for.
The Marines regrouped. Still afraid. Still determined.
One officer screamed trying to restore order.
"Fire Fist Ace is a Logia type!"
He pointed desperately.
"He's made of fire!"
"Be careful!"
"Normal attacks won't work!"
Ace exhaled slowly. Still watching the battlefield. Then quietly he spoke. Not to the war. Not to the Marines. Only to Luffy.
"…I never imagined…"
A pause. His voice softer now. Real. Honest.
"…that the day would come where I'd need to be saved by you."
He smiled. A real smile. Not pride. Not stubbornness. Just gratitude.
"Thanks, Luffy."
Luffy blinked. Then laughed. That same stupid laugh. Bright. Pure. Uncomplicated.
"Shishishishi!"
He pointed upward. Toward Whitebeard. Toward the commanders. Toward everyone.
"It's all because of old man Whitebeard and his crew!"
He grinned wider.
"They helped me out!"
Ace looked up too. At Whitebeard. At the man he called father. At the family that had come to save him. And for a moment his chest hurt. Because he knew. He knew the price. He knew what everyone had risked.
But there was no time. Because the Marines raised their weapons again. Hundreds of rifles. Dozens of cannons. Swords flashing.
A wall of death.
All aimed at the brothers.
"DON'T THINK YOU'RE SAFE YET!"
A Captain shouted. Voice full of rage.
"This is still your execution ground!"
"OPEN FIRE!"
Gunshots exploded. A storm of bullets.
But they passed harmlessly through Ace's fire body.
And bounced uselessly off Luffy's rubber body.
"Tch!"
"They're useless!"
Two Marine swordsmen rushed Luffy.
Fast. Blades ready.
Luffy turned but Ace was faster. He grabbed Luffy's head with one hand and forced him downward.
"Duck."
The blades missed. By inches. Ace stood above him. Flames rising. Eyes cold. Protective. Older brother. Always.
"He's my little brother."
A pause.
The Marines froze. Because they could feel it. That killing intent. That fire.
"I'd like you…"
His fist ignited. The flames becoming massive. Wild. Terrifying.
"…to back off from him."
He pulled his arm back.
And roared—
"FIRE FIST!!!"
A colossal pillar of fire exploded forward. It swallowed the Marines whole. The entire plaza shook. Flames shot skyward. Even the war itself seemed to pause.
Because Fire Fist Ace was back.
The Marines were sent flying. The path opened. Smoke. Ash. Silence.
Then Ace turned smiling. Like the older brother again. Like before all of this. Before prisons. Before execution. Before war.
"Get moving, Luffy."
He pointed forward. Toward freedom.
Toward life.
"Let's hurry up and get out of here!"
Luffy grinned. Bright. Certain.
"YEAH!"
And together the two brothers ran. Forward.
Out of Marineford. Out of death. Out of fate.
While behind them the Marines stepped back. Because for the first time they were afraid of them.
————————
The battlefield refused to slow. Even after freedom, even after the chains broke, Marineford was still hell.
Luffy and Ace ran through the plaza like a storm.
Dodging bullets. Breaking through formations. Punching through walls of Marines.
Everywhere they moved chaos followed.
"LEFT!" Ace shouted.
Luffy instantly ducked. A sword passed over his head.
Luffy stretched his arm back and slammed his fist into the Marine's face.
"Gomu Gomu no—"
CRASH.
"Rifle!"
Another Marine came from behind.
Ace stepped in. His fist ignited. No hesitation.
"Too slow."
BOOM.
The Marine was swallowed by flames. Sent flying.
The brothers kept moving. Perfect rhythm.
Perfect trust. Like they had done this forever.
Because they had.
"Behind you!"
"Got it!"
"Right side!"
"I see it!"
Marines were thrown aside. Vice Admirals cursed. Cannons repositioned. But they kept advancing. Together. Alive.
And then from the center of the battlefield a voice roared loud enough to silence war itself.
Whitebeard. Edward Newgate stood tall.
Wounded. Bleeding. Half his body carrying the scars of war.
But still he stood like the strongest man in the world and when he spoke everyone listened.
Pirates.
Marines.
Even the sea.
"LISTEN CAREFULLY!" His voice thundered. His bisento struck the ground.
The battlefield froze.
"WHITEBEARD PIRATES!"
A pause. Heavy. Absolute.
"I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU AN ORDER…"
His eyes swept across his sons. Every commander. Every ally. Every man who had followed him across the seas. His family.
"…AS YOUR CAPTAIN."
Another pause. One final truth.
"ONE LAST TIME."
Silence. Then immediate shock.
The commanders froze. The allied captains stared. Some refused to even believe what they had heard.
"Pops—?!"
"No!"
"What are you saying?!"
"Don't say that!"
Marco's eyes widened.
Vista clenched his fists.
Jozu gritted his teeth.
Because they understood. They understood exactly what that meant and they hated it.
But Whitebeard did not waver. Not even once. His voice remained steady. Like fate itself.
"All of you…"
He pointed forward. Toward escape. Toward life. Toward the future.
"…and I…"
A breath. Final.
"…will split up from here."
The words hit like cannon fire.
"EVERYONE SURVIVE!"
His roar shook the bay.
"AT ANY COST!"
He slammed his bisento down. The sea trembled.
"AND GO BACK…"
His voice softened. Only slightly. A father speaking to his children.
"…TO THE NEW WORLD!"
A final smile. Proud. Warm. Broken.
"MY SONS."
Tears appeared instantly.
Across the Whitebeard Pirates.
Men who had survived the New World.
Men who feared nothing.
Crying openly.
Because this was goodbye.
Whitebeard lifted his hand. Quake power gathering. The air cracking around him.
Reality itself splitting.
"I…"
He looked at the sea. At the future. At the age of pirates. And laughed.
"…am a remnant of the old era!"
CRACK.
The air shattered. The sea screamed.
"There is no ship…"
Another crack. Like the world itself was breaking.
"…that can carry me…"
His eyes sharpened. Final. Absolute.
"…into the new era!"
BOOOOOM.
The quake exploded. Splitting the battlefield.
Separating Marines from pirates. Creating the final path. The final farewell.
"GO!"
His voice roared like thunder.
"MY SONS!!"
The Whitebeard Pirates stood frozen.
Conflicted. Broken. No one wanted to move.
No one wanted to leave him behind.
But then Marco stepped forward. Tears in his eyes. Voice shaking. Yet firm. Because someone had to do it. Because Pops had given an order.
"Everyone…"
He clenched his fists. Forced himself to be strong.
"RETREAT!"
His voice cracked. But he shouted louder.
"FOLLOW POPS' ORDERS!"
He looked toward Ace. Toward Luffy. Toward the future.
"ACE IS SAFE!"
Another breath. Painful. Necessary.
"WE MOVE NOW!"
That was enough. Because if Marco said it they had to.
The commanders turned.
The allied pirates followed.
Some crying. Some screaming. Some refusing to look back.
But they moved.
Because Whitebeard had ordered it.
Because sons obey their father.
Even when it hurts.
Especially when it hurts.
As Marines rushed forward trying to swarm Whitebeard Ace saw it and stopped.
His eyes widened. Panic. Rage.
"GET OFF OF HIM!"
He turned. Fire exploding from his body and roared—
"YOU BASTARDS!"
"FIRE FIST!!"
A massive wave of flames blasted forward.
Engulfing the Marines. Forcing them back.
Creating a circle of fire. A barrier. A final private moment. Just for them. Just father and son.
The flames danced around them.
No one else entered. No one else mattered.
Only silence. Only goodbye.
Ace dropped to his knees. Hard. His head lowered. Pressed to the ground. Shoulders shaking. Because he couldn't hold it anymore. Not pride. Not tears. Not anything.
Whitebeard looked at him. Quietly. Not as a captain. Not as an Emperor. As a father.
And asked the only thing that mattered.
"Just tell me one thing, Ace…"
A pause. Gentle. Almost soft.
"Were you happy…"
His voice lowered. Real. Human.
"…to have me as your father?"
That broke him. Completely. Ace slammed his forehead to the ground. Crying openly. Violently. Like a child. Like a son. Like someone who had spent his whole life asking if he deserved love.
And finally—
finally—
had his answer.
"OF COURSE I AM!"
His voice shattered. Tears hitting the ground.
His fists trembling.
He cried harder. Every word ripped from his soul. "You gave me a place to belong!"
His shoulders shook. "You called me your son!"
He screamed. Raw. Honest.
"You gave me family!"
A final cry. A lifetime of pain. Released.
"THANK YOU… POPS!!"
Whitebeard smiled. A proud father's smile.
The kind that needed no more words.
Because he had heard enough.
Because that was enough.
Because that was everything.
He laughed. Deep. Warm. Final.
"Gurararara…"
He lifted his bisento. Turned toward the Marines. Toward death. Toward legend.
And said—
"Now go."
A final order. A final act of love.
Ace looked up. Tears still falling and Whitebeard smiled one last time.
"Run, my son."
—————————-
The battlefield was supposed to be moving forward.
Retreat. Escape. Survival.
That was the order. That was Whitebeard's final command.
But even then many pirates refused to move.
They stood there. Frozen. Trembling.
Because leaving him behind felt worse than death itself.
"Pops—!"
"We're not leaving you!"
"No!"
"We'll fight with you!"
Commanders shouted.
Allied captains protested.
Even hardened New World pirates had tears in their eyes.
Because how could they leave the man who gave them everything?
How could sons abandon their father?
Edward Newgate stood there.
Massive. Bleeding. Unshaken.
And then his voice roared. Like thunder splitting the sea.
"YOU DARE DISOBEY YOUR CAPTAIN?!"
The entire battlefield froze. Even Marines flinched.
"I TOLD YOU FOOLS TO GO!"
His bisento slammed into the ground. The air cracked.
His eyes were sharp. Absolute. Final.
"DON'T MAKE ME REPEAT MYSELF!"
A pause. Heavy. Painful.
"LIVE!"
His voice shook the bay.
"THAT IS MY ORDER!"
That was enough. Because no one could refuse that voice. No one could refuse Pops.
Even if it broke them. Especially if it broke them.
Nearby Luffy had stopped running.
Ivankov noticed instantly and screamed. Wildly. Dramatically. Panicking.
"STRAWBOY!"
He pointed furiously.
"WHY ARE YOU STANDING AROUND?!"
Luffy didn't answer. Because beside him Ace had stopped too. He wasn't moving. He was just standing there.
Watching. Looking back. At Whitebeard. At the man standing alone against the world.
At his father. At his Pops.
Luffy clenched his fists.
He understood. More than anyone, he understood and quietly he spoke.
"…Ace."
A pause. Gentle. Real.
"Let's go."
He looked at him. No jokes. No smile.
"The old man…"
His voice lowered. Respectful.
"…already made up his mind."
Ace said nothing. He just stared. One last look. One final memory. His Pops. Standing tall. Unbreakable. Like he always had.
Ace lowered his head. Tears threatening again.
Then he turned and ran.
Together the two brothers ran. Forward. Because that was the only way to honor him.
Ahead Jinbe rushed toward them.
Relieved. Protective. Urgent.
"Ace!"
"Luffy-kun!"
He pointed forward. Firm. Immediate.
"Get in front of me!"
He moved beside them. Ready. Shield-like.
"I'll protect both of you!"
His voice was calm. Certain. Like a knight. Like family.
"The Marines want both of you!"
He looked back at the battlefield. At Whitebeard. At what this war truly meant.
"But what Whitebeard wants…"
A pause. Heavy.
"…is as many survivors as possible!"
Nearby a pirate shouted from the docks. Desperate. Hopeful.
"Over here!"
He waved wildly.
"We stole a Navy ship!"
"COME QUICKLY!"
Freedom. Right there. Just a little farther. Just a little more.
And then a voice. Cold. Burning. Cruel. Echoed across the battlefield.
"Do they really think…"
A slow step. Heavy. Magma dripping.
"…that they can get away?"
Everyone froze. Because they knew that voice.
Akainu.
Walking forward like death itself. The Marines straightened instantly.
Relieved. Terrified.
"Admiral!"
"It's Akainu!"
He glanced at them. Barely. Like they were insects.
"You guys…"
His voice low. Dangerous.
"Move aside."
His fist ignited. Magma boiling. The ground melting beneath him.
Then he punched.
"Great Eruption!"
BOOOOM.
A wave of magma exploded forward.
Pirates screamed. Bodies were swallowed whole. The heat alone was unbearable. Men died instantly. Burned alive. No mercy. No hesitation.
Only annihilation.
Ace heard it. The screams. His crew. His family. Burning. He closed his eyes. Still running. Still trying. Still forcing himself forward.
Jinbe shouted. Urgent. Desperate.
"You two!"
He pointed ahead.
"Just keep going! Until you reach the ship!"
But Akainu wasn't finished. Of course he wasn't. He looked at them. Mocking. Disgusted. And smiled.
"So…"His voice dripped venom. "As soon as you rescue Fire Fist Ace…"
A pause. Cruel amusement. "…you run."
His smile widened. "The Whitebeard Pirates…"
He laughed. Cold. Merciless. "…must be a group of cowards."
The pirates froze. Rage immediate. Fists clenched. Teeth grinding. Because everyone knew he was trying to provoke them.
One commander shouted instantly. Furious.
"He's trying to stir you up!"
He pointed at Ace. At all of them.
"If you stop now—"
His voice cracked. Desperate.
"YOU'RE PLAYING INTO HIS HAND!"
But Akainu kept walking.
Closer. Closer.
Like a judge approaching execution.
"Well…" He smirked. Looking directly at Ace.
"Your captain is that guy…" A cruel laugh.
"…so I suppose you can't help it." His eyes darkened. Final strike.
"Because after all…"
A pause. Every word deliberate. "Whitebeard…"
He smiled. Mockingly. Like spitting on a grave. "…is just a loser from the old times."
Ace stopped. Completely. Like the world itself had frozen.
Luffy turned instantly. Fear hitting him.
"Ace!"
Ace's head lowered. Flames flickering around him. Shoulders trembling. Not fear.
Rage. Pure rage.
He turned slowly. Toward Akainu. Eyes burning. Voice shaking. "…A loser?"
A step forward. Fire rising. "Take back what you said."
The pirates panicked. Immediate. Because they knew. They knew this would end badly.
"HEY!"
"DON'T, ACE!"
"KEEP RUNNING!"
"JUST IGNORE HIM!"
But Ace didn't hear them. Couldn't hear them. Because Akainu had insulted the one man he would never forgive that for.
"He mocked Pops…"
Flames rose higher. Violent. Wild.
Akainu smiled. Because it worked. Exactly as planned. "Take it back?"
A cold laugh. "Not in a million years."
He stepped closer. And began. Every word sharper than a blade.
"I'll tell you why." His voice echoed. For everyone. For the world.
"Your father…"
A pause. Deliberate.
"Gol D. Roger…"
The battlefield listened.
"…conquered the Grand Line. He opened the Great Pirate Era…by sacrificing himself."
Akainu sneered.
"As a Navy Admiral, it's not my place to praise pirates…"
A pause. Sharp.
"But he was true to his name."
His voice hardened.
"The King of the Pirates."
Ace's fists trembled.
Akainu continued. Merciless. "And in contrast…"
He looked toward Whitebeard. Still standing.
Still fighting. "What has Whitebeard done?"
A cruel smile. "I wonder if he ever truly intended to fight. Maybe he just wanted a large family somewhere…and was satisfied being a big fish in a little barrel."
Ace's flames exploded harder. His breathing changed.
Luffy's face darkened.
Everyone knew this was going wrong. Fast.
"There are fools who say his name protects islands…"
Akainu laughed.
"But if you ask me?"
A sneer. Absolute contempt. "He just kept weaklings afraid of him and somehow thought that made him a hero."
His grin widened. "It makes me laugh."
The Whitebeard commanders were shaking.
Marco.
Izou.
Vista.
Every one of them furious.
"When Roger was alive…" Akainu said, "Whitebeard was second place and even after Roger died…he still couldn't become king."
His voice lowered. Cruel. Final. "That means he'll never be better than Roger."
His eyes locked on Ace. "And he'll be a loser forever."
Silence. Then Ace walked forward. Toward Akainu. Toward death.
"That…"
His voice shook.
"…is who Whitebeard is."
Akainu smiled.
"And that…"
A final twist.
"…is the truth."
He kept going. Because cruelty was easy.
Because justice without mercy was still cruelty.
"He gathered punks who call him Pops…roamed the sea with his fake little family…and after all those years…he gained nothing."
A pause. Deadly.
"In the end…"
His grin widened.
"He was even stabbed by one of his own sons."
The commanders' eyes widened.
Fury. Pain. Memory.
"A fool who fell for my line and now he'll die protecting that same fool."
Akainu shrugged. Mocking. "Don't you think…"
His voice dripped poison. "…his life is empty?"
Ace shouted. Raw. Broken. "STOP IT!"
Izou screamed.
"DON'T DO IT, ACE!"
"COME BACK!"
But Ace was already burning. Already gone.
Already decided.
"Pops gave us a place to live!"
His voice cracked. Tears and fury together.
"You can't understand his greatness!"
Akainu stepped forward. Magma rising.
Justice colder than fire. "People who can't live justly…"
His fist ignited. "…don't deserve to live."
He pointed. Judging.
"Punks like you…"
A pause. Absolute.
"…don't deserve a place in this world."
Ace roared. "I SAID STOP IT!"
Akainu roared back. Louder. Crueler.
"WHITEBEARD WILL DIE A LOSER!"
His magma exploded.
"It's fitting…"
A final insult.
"…for a big coward like him!"
Ace's flames burst violently. His answer shook the plaza.
"WHITEBEARD…"
His fist ignited. Soul burning.
"…IS A GREAT PIRATE!"
He stepped forward. Fire consuming everything.
"He shaped this era!"
His voice broke. Tears and pride.
"DON'T MAKE FUN…"
A final scream.
"…OF THE MAN WHO SAVED ME!"
He charged. Fire exploding. The pirates screamed.
"DON'T DO IT, ACE!"
Ace roared the name of his faith. The name of his father.
"THE NAME OF THIS ERA…"
His fist flew forward.
"…SHOULD BE WHITEBEARD!!!"
Akainu answered with magma. Hell against hell. Fire against volcanic death. The fists collided. For a moment they stood equal.
Fire. Magma.
Will. Pride.
Family. Justice.
Clashing.
Akainu smiled. Cruel. Victorious. "Both Whitebeard…"
His magma pushed forward. Overwhelming.
"…and all of you who call him Pops…"
His grin widened. "…are losers."
Then the magma broke through.
Ace was blown back. Burned. Crashing hard.
Izou screamed. "ACE HAS BEEN BURNED!"
Akainu stepped forward. Merciless. "Did you get careless…"
His voice cold. "…because you ate a Logia fruit?"
He pointed. Final judgment. "You're just fire."
His magma dripped. Dominating. "But my magma…"
A terrifying smile. "…can even burn fire. My power…"
A final truth. "…is far stronger than yours."
Luffy tried to move. To reach him. To help.
But his body gave out. He collapsed to his knees. Breathing hard. Broken. Finished.
And then something fell. Ace's vivre card.
Landing near him.
Jinbe shouted. Panicked. "Luffy-kun! You must not fight anymore!"
Luffy stared. Shaking. Reaching. "Wait…"
His voice weak. Desperate. "Ace's vivre card…"
He crawled. Trying to grab it. Trying to hold onto something. Anything.
Akainu looked at both of them and spoke again. Because monsters never stop.
"Gol D. Roger…The King of the Pirates."
"And Monkey D. Dragon…The Revolutionary."
His eyes narrowed. "I was amazed…"
A pause. Cruel interest.
"…to hear that the sons of those two…"
His voice dropped.
"…are step brothers."
He raised his fist. Magma boiling.
"You two…"
A final sentence. Death itself.
"…have the blood of criminals in your veins."
"I don't care…"
He stepped forward. Closer. Closer.
"…if everyone else escapes."
His magma fist rose. Target locked.
"As long as I get you two."
His smile vanished. Only murder remained.
"Watch…"
A final step.
"…what I do."
And suddenly he aimed past Ace. Past everyone.
Straight at Luffy. Still on the ground. Still reaching for the vivre card. Still vulnerable.
Ace's eyes widened. Instant understanding.
Pure horror.
"WAIT—!"
Luffy looked up. Just as his fingers touched the card and saw it. Akainu's magma fist. Coming straight for him.
Death. Certain. Immediate.
Everyone screamed.
"LUFFY!"
"NO!"
"STOP!"
——————-
From the battlefield Mihawk's eyes widened for the first time.
Aokiji's ice blade clashed against Yoru as Mihawk forced him back, but even then his gaze was locked on Luffy.
Too far. Too late.
Damn it.
His expression darkened.
So close…and now this?
He clicked his tongue.
If Strawhat dies here, Ada will tear Marineford apart before she even arrives.
And worse he had failed. Failed her. Failed the promise he made without ever needing words.
Aokiji noticed the shift in Mihawk's killing intent and frowned.
"Looking away in a fight against me?"
Mihawk's voice was ice. "Move."
Even Aokiji felt the danger in that single word.

Elsewhere
Bullet had just forced Kizaru back with a monstrous punch. The impact cracked the frozen battlefield beneath them.
But when he turned he saw Akainu. Saw that magma fist. Saw Luffy frozen in place.
His eyes sharpened. "Shit."
Kizaru adjusted his glasses. "Oh my… looks like Sakazuki-san is serious."
Bullet snarled. "I don't have time for you!"
He charged but Kizaru flashed in front of him again, light gathering at his fingertips.
"No shortcuts."
Bullet roared and slammed forward, fury exploding from him. "That brat better not die!"
Because if he does Ada will tear him apart.

Kuma, surrounded by Marines and Pacifistas, looked up.
Silent. Still. But beneath that calm—urgency.
His massive hand tightened. Even he couldn't reach in time.
The distance was too much. The moment too fast.
He stepped forward but Vice Admirals blocked his path.
"Don't let him move!"
"Kuma is trying to protect Straw Hat!"
Kuma's eyes narrowed. For the first time there was visible emotion.
Concern. Real concern.
Luffy…
⸻————-
Closest of all. Jinbe's eyes widened in horror.
He had been cutting through Marines, trying to stay close but Akainu moved too fast.
Far too fast. Even for him.
"LUFFY-KUN!" His voice thundered across the battlefield.
He lunged desperate but he already knew. He wouldn't make it. Not in time. His heart dropped.
No…
Not after all this.
Not here.
Not now.
⸻————
Ace saw it too and everything inside him froze. His voice tore from his throat.
"LUFFY!!
Akainu's fist descended. Merciless. Like judgment itself and for one single second the entire battlefield stopped breathing.
Ace moved. Instinct. No thought. No hesitation. Only his brother. Only love.
He threw himself forward using his own body as a shield.
The pirates screamed.
"ACE! NO!!!"
The world stopped. The fist came down.
Ace stood there. Ready to die. For his brother.
And then before the magma fist could land someone caught it.
With one hand.
Effortlessly. Absolutely.
The battlefield froze.
Everyone stared.
Even Akainu.
Because standing there between death and the brothers was a woman.
Elegant. Terrifying. Familiar. Red.
Her hand holding magma like it was nothing. Her presence alone shaking Marineford.
And then Luffy and Ace heard it.
A calm voice. A feminine voice. Warm. Dangerous. Familiar.
"You boys okay?"

Author's Note
3 chapters for today! I got really excited while writing this part, so I ended up going all out for these chapters. This is probably the longest chapter I've written so far with over 5,000 words in total.
Marineford is one of those arcs that just keeps building tension with every scene, and honestly, writing these moments has been incredibly fun.
And yes, of course I had to end it with a cliffhanger.
I'm not letting you off that easily!
See you in the next chapter.
