One Piece: Crimson Shadows

Chapter 208

Chapter 208

The battlefield still trembled from the aftermath of Luffy's Conqueror's Haki.

Marines were still collapsing. Some struggled just to breathe. Others forced themselves back to their feet, drenched in cold sweat.

The pressure of that burst, that overwhelming will, still lingered in the air like thunder after lightning

And among them Vice Admiral Doberman stood firm. His expression was grim. Serious. Because now he understood. This was no ordinary rookie. This was not just another pirate from the Worst Generation.

This boy was dangerous. Terrifyingly so. He gritted his teeth and raised his sword. His voice cut through the battlefield. Sharp. Urgent. Absolute.

"DON'T LET HIM ESCAPE THIS BATTLEFIELD!"

He pointed directly at Luffy. His glare murderous.

"If you do…"

A pause. Heavy.

"…he will prove to be a formidable foe for us in the future!" His voice thundered louder.

"MAKE SURE HE DIES HERE!"

The nearby Marines roared in response. Fear turned into desperation.

Desperation into violence. Because now they understood the threat. Not tomorrow.

Not years from now. Now. Straw Hat Luffy had to die now.

"YES, SIR!"

"KILL STRAW HAT!"

"DON'T LET HIM REACH ACE!"

Dozens of Marines charged. Blades drawn.

Guns raised. Murder in their eyes. Straight for Luffy.

And then, Whitebeard moved. He stepped forward. Blood still dripping from his mouth.

Body wounded. Breathing heavy.

Yet still a monster. Still a Yonko. Still Whitebeard.

He pulled his arm back and punched the air itself.

BOOOOOOOM!

The atmosphere cracked. A violent shockwave exploded outward. The charging Marines were blasted away instantly, sent flying like leaves in a storm.

Bodies crashing across the frozen battlefield. Screams everywhere. Complete destruction.

Whitebeard laughed. Deep. Thunderous.

Fearless.

"GURARARARARA!!"

He planted his bisento into the ice. Eyes blazing.

"You Navy soldiers are a bunch of cowards!"

His voice shook Marineford. "You need this much strength…"

He pointed toward the fallen Marines. Mocking. Disgusted.

"…just to fight off a fledgling?!"

His grin widened. Dangerous.

"I thought…"

He slammed his weapon down again.

"…you wanted to kill me!"

He punched the air a second time. Another quake. Another explosion. More Marines were blown away like insects before a storm.

Even the frozen sea trembled.

One Marine shouted desperately trying to restore order.

"Forget Straw Hat!"

He pointed at Whitebeard. Panicked. "GET WHITEBEARD FIRST!"

Another Marine screamed. Voice shaking. "He's a monster! but he's wounded!"

Sweat dripped from his face. "He's badly hurt!"

His voice cracked. "BRING HIM DOWN AT ANY COST!"

Whitebeard smirked. Like a king challenged by ants.

"Bring it on."

Nearby Izou and several Whitebeard Pirates rushed to his side.

Weapons drawn. Ready. Loyal.

"We'll back up Pops!"

"We're with you!"

"No one touches the old man!"

Another Marine shouted trying to overcome fear with sheer volume.

"DON'T BE AFRAID!"

"GET HIM!"

Ivankov noticed it immediately. The battlefield was shifting. The Marines were changing focus.

Whitebeard had forced it. He had dragged the attention of the entire battlefield back onto himself and that meant an opening.

Ivankov turned sharply to Luffy. Eyes wide.

Voice urgent.

"STRAWBOY!"

He pointed ahead. "This is our chance!"

Far away Doberman saw it too and roared.

"DON'T LET STRAW HAT GET AWAY!"

Whitebeard growled. Watching the battlefield move. Feeling the pressure change.

"Damn Navy soldiers…"

His eyes narrowed.

"They've started regrouping."

Akainu watched coldly. Magma dripping. Calculating.

"So…"

His voice low.

"They're forcing it through by brute force."

Kizaru adjusted his glasses. Almost amused.

"I wonder…"

A slow whistle.

"…how much longer he can keep hanging on."

Above, Ace watched. Shackled. Helpless.

Terrified.

"Pops…" His voice cracked. Because he knew. He could see it. Whitebeard was pushing himself too far. Again. For him.

Always for him.

One of the commanders shouted desperately voice full of worry.

"POPS!"

"Don't push yourself too much!"

"You're wounded!"

And then Whitebeard raised his voice. Louder than the battlefield. Louder than cannonfire. Louder than war. Every Whitebeard Pirate turned.

Marco.

Vista.

Jozu.

Izou.

All of them.

Even Luffy looked.

Even the Marines paused.

Because when Whitebeard spoke, everyone listened.

"EVERYONE!!!"

Silence answered.

And then Whitebeard gave the order. The one no one expected.

"From now on…"

His eyes locked onto Luffy. Sharp. Certain.

"…back Straw Hat Luffy up!"

A pause. Heavy. Unbelievable.

"With all your strength!"

Shock. Across the battlefield. Immediate. Massive.

The commanders froze.

Even Marco.

Even veterans of the New World.

Because Whitebeard, their captain, had entrusted Ace's rescue…to Luffy.

Izou blinked. Completely stunned. "Ace's… brother?!"

Marco stared. Eyes wide. "…Pops?!"

Nearby, Kizaru, while dealing with Kuma, glanced over. Even he found it absurd.

"Well now…"

A lazy whistle.

"That's quite the responsibility."

And instantly the Whitebeard Pirates moved.

Because if Pops said it, that was law.

That was truth. That was everything.

Two Vice Admirals rushed straight for Luffy.

Fast. Precise. Deadly.

Ivankov's eyes widened. "STRAWBOY! WATCH OUT!"

Vice Admiral Momonga charged first. Sword drawn. Murderous. But before he could reach Luffy someone intercepted.

Steel clashed. Hard.

"You!" Momonga snarled. Recognizing him. "Bohemian Knight Doma!"

Doma smirked. Sword raised. Unshaken.

"Sorry, Vice Admiral."

A grin.

"You're not getting past me."

At the same time Vice Admiral Dalmatian rushed in only to be blocked by the Decalvan Brothers.

Both brothers grinning like beasts.

"Wrong path, Marine!"

And Doberman himself attempting to force through was stopped by none other than McGuy. Sword ready. Eyes fierce.

"Not today."

Luffy and Ivankov kept running and finally noticed. They were surrounded. Not by enemies. By allies. A wall. A shield. A path.

Whitebeard's pirates and all of his allied captains, forming a protective line around Straw Hat Luffy. Protecting him. Opening the road.

Ivankov stared. Actually speechless.

"This…"

His makeup nearly cracked.

"This is huge!"

A pirate from the New World shouted while grinning fiercely.

"We pirates of the New World…"

He pointed ahead. Toward Ace. Toward war.

"…will assist you!"

Another pirate roared. Weapon raised.

"Ace is right there!"

"LET'S GO, STRAW HAT!"

Even the Marines panicked. Watching it unfold.

"The allied pirates—!"

"They're surrounding Straw Hat!"

"They're protecting him!"

Luffy blinked. Still running. Still confused. Still Luffy.

"…What are they doing?!"

Thunder Lord McGuy shouted back without looking. Still holding the line.

"Hurry up, Ace's brother!"

His voice fierce.

"The Navy forces are focusing on Pops!"

A slash. Another Marine down.

"This is the only chance you'll get!"

Another pirate shouted laughing wildly.

"The Admirals are busy!"

He pointed across the battlefield.

"Kuma, Mihawk, and Bullet are holding them back!"

His grin widened. "So break through!"

Another captain yelled charging forward.

"Let's break through all at once!"

"COME WITH US!"

Ivankov turned to Luffy. Serious now. No comedy. Only truth.

"Strawboy…"

His voice lowered. Heavy.

"This is a big deal."

He pointed toward Whitebeard. Toward the emperor.

"The world's strongest man…"

A pause.

"…is putting you to the test."

Luffy blinked. Confused. "Huh?!"

Ivankov shouted dramatically. Because of course he did.

"WHITEBEARD…"

Arms spread wide. Pure theater.

"…has placed all his hopes on YOU!"

A dramatic pause. Tears almost forming.

"That is no small thing!"

His finger pointed directly at Luffy's face.

"Are you ready…"

Voice sharp. Important.

"…to answer those expectations?!"

Luffy stared ahead. Toward Ace. Toward the execution platform. Toward the reason he came here.

His answer came instantly. Without hesitation. Without politics. Without symbolism. Just truth. Pure and simple.

"I don't know…"

His voice calm. Focused.

"…what old man Whitebeard wants."

A pause.

His eyes sharpened. Locked on Ace.

"But I came here…"

His fists clenched.

"…for only one thing."

Another step forward. Another breath. Another promise.

"Right from the start."

And he looked up, straight at Ace.

No fear. No doubt. Only determination.

Only brotherhood. Only one goal.

"I'm going…"

A final step. Toward war. Toward death.

Toward Ace.

"…to save my brother."

———————————-

The battlefield had become nothing but chaos.

Smoke. Fire. Ice. Blood. Screams.

The war had consumed everything and through all of it Monkey D. Luffy kept running.

Bruised. Bleeding. Half-dead. But still moving. Still climbing. Still refusing to stop.

Because Ace was there. Right there.Close enough to see. Close enough to hear. Close enough to save.

After all the pain. After all the fighting. After every impossible wall he was almost there.

The path was finally opening.

Ivankov looked ahead. Eyes wide. Hope rising. For the first time, real hope.

He pointed dramatically. Voice echoing across the battlefield.

"The path is clear!"

A grin. Wild. Excited.

"NOW IS OUR CHANCE!"

He turned sharply. Toward the man waiting behind them. Toward the revolutionary with calm eyes and dangerous hands.

And screamed with full dramatic force.

"INAZUMA!!!"

Inazuma stepped forward. Quiet. Elegant.

Deadly.

Without hesitation his hand transformed.

Fingers becoming giant scissors. Sharp enough to cut the world itself. He looked at the execution platform. Measured the distance.

Then he cut.

SHRRRRRKKKK.

The battlefield split open. Like paper beneath divine scissors. The ground itself peeled upward forming a long, elevated strip. A perfect road.

Straight. Direct. Leading all the way to Ace's execution platform. A bridge to destiny.

The Marines stared in horror.

"What the hell is THAT?!"

"The ground—!"

"He cut the battlefield?!"

Another Marine shouted in panic. Recognition hitting hard.

"It's that revolutionary's power!"

He pointed desperately.

"Inazuma of the Revolutionary Army did that!"

Another officer screamed. Voice breaking.

"BREAK THROUGH ALL AT ONCE!"

"STOP STRAW HAT!"

But the Marines couldn't. Because Whitebeard's forces were everywhere.

Holding the line. Blocking every opening. Turning the battlefield into a fortress for Luffy.

"We can't!"

One Marine shouted. Desperate.

"These pirates won't let us through!"

Cannons were fired. Straight at Luffy. An entire barrage. Enough to erase him. But before they could reach—

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

They exploded midair. Destroyed instantly.

By Whitebeard's commanders. By his allies.

By everyone who had chosen to protect that path.

Marco smirked.

Vista cut through another wave.

Jozu held the line like a wall.

The commanders roared.

"No one touches Straw Hat!"

"Protect the path!"

"GET HIM TO ACE!"

Luffy reached the beginning of the bridge. That straight road. That final chance.

Inazuma looked at him. Calm. Certain.

"Luffy-kun…"

A small nod. Respect. Faith.

"Go ahead."

Luffy looked at him and smiled. Tired. Grateful. Determined.

"…Thanks!"

Ivankov stood behind him. Hands raised dramatically. Tears practically forming. Like a proud mother watching chaos unfold.

"JUST ADVANCE, STRAWBOY!"

He pointed forward like destiny itself.

"DON'T LOOK BACK!"

The pirates around them roared. Their voices shaking Marineford.

"STRAWHAT WILL MAKE IT!"

"RUN!"

"GO SAVE ACE!"

Even high above Kizaru watched. Still fighting. Still calculating. Even he had to admit it.

"I can't believe it…"

He adjusted his glasses. Eyes narrowed.

"You really used that brat…"

A slow whistle.

"…as your trump card, Whitebeard."

Because that was the truth. Whitebeard had made his choice. He had bet everything on Luffy. And everyone could see it.

The Admirals couldn't interfere. Not now. Not with monsters holding them back.

Bartholomew Kuma.

Douglas Bullet.

Dracule Mihawk.

Three walls. Three disasters. Three reasons the Admirals were stuck.

And as they watched Luffy run all three reacted.

Mihawk gave the faintest smirk. Yoru resting against his shoulder. Eyes sharp. Calm. Knowing.

You're close, Straw Hat.

A pause.

Do it.

Another. Colder. Prouder.

Go save your brother.

Bullet laughed. Loud. Wild. Like watching a cannonball fly exactly where it should.

"So you made it!"

His grin widened. Feral.

"GO STRAIGHT AHEAD!"

He slammed another Marine aside. Still laughing.

"That's it!"

Kuma remained silent as always. But inside his thoughts were clear. Heavy. Hopeful.

Go, Luffy.

A pause.

Save your brother.

Luffy ran. Faster. Harder. No hesitation.

No fear. The execution platform right ahead. Ace right there.

He looked up and smiled. Bright. Pure. Like a child who had finally reached home and shouted with everything left in him.

"I'M HERE, ACEEEEE!!!"

And then.

CRASH.

Something landed in front of him. Heavy. Violent. Absolute.

The bridge shook. The battlefield froze.

Because standing there blocking the final path was the man every Marine trusted.

The man pirates feared.

The living legend of the Navy.

Monkey D. Garp.

The Hero of the Marines.

Luffy's grandfather.

The pirates gasped. Immediate. Shocked.

"It's the Marine Hero!"

"Monkey D. Garp!"

"No way—!"

Even Ivankov's eyes widened. Because this this was worse than an Admiral. Much worse.

"It's the Navy Hero…"

His voice dropped. Serious.

"Monkey D. Garp…"

Luffy stopped. Completely. His eyes widened.

Because this was the one person he never wanted here. Not now. Not like this.

"…Gramps…"

Ace's eyes widened too. Fear. Real fear.

Because he knew. He knew what this meant.

"Luffy!"

Above, Sengoku watched silently. Intensely.

Eyes locked on Garp. Because he knew too.

This was no ordinary confrontation. This was family and family was always the most dangerous battlefield.

Luffy clenched his fists. Voice desperate.

Honest. Childlike.

"I'm not hurting you…"

A pause. His voice cracked.

"So just please…"

He looked at him. Begging.

"…Gramps, let me pass."

Silence. Heavy. Terrible.

And then Garp roared. Not as a grandfather.

As a Marine. As a wall. As duty itself.

"If you want to pass through…"

His fists tightened. Eyes shaking. Voice thundered.

"THEN YOU HAVE TO KILL ME FIRST!"

Luffy froze. Instantly. Because that—that he could not do. Never.

"I can't do it!"

He shouted back. Furious. Pained.

"I can't do it, Gramps!"

His voice broke.

"MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!"

Garp stepped forward. No mercy. Even if it was a lie. Even if it was killing him inside.

"If you can't…"

A pause. Cruel. Necessary.

"…then Ace will die."

Luffy's eyes widened. His breath stopped.

"No way…"

Garp's voice hardened. Because if he softened, he would break.

"Things don't always go the way you want!"

His fists shook. His heart screamed.

"I'm not going to show you mercy!"

He glared. Trying to be a Marine. Trying.

Failing.

"You chose this path!"

His voice cracked for just a second. Only a second.

"Luffy…"

A final truth. A final lie.

"I consider you my enemy!"

And Garp attacked. His fist shot forward. Fast. Overwhelming.

A fist that had cornered Roger.

A fist that shattered mountains.

Coming straight for Luffy.

Luffy entered Gear Second. Steam burst from his body. Heart pounding.

At this exact moment everything was slowing down. Garp's mind raced. Not with battle. With memories. Flashes. Fragments.

Pain. Love. Family.

Ace. Luffy. Sabo.

As children. Laughing. Eating together.

Running wild through the forest. Brothers. Home.

Then another memory. Sharper. Heavier.

Ace. Small. Quiet.

Looking at Garp. Asking the question that never left.

"Hey gramps…"

His voice small. Painful.

"Do I deserve to live?"

That memory, that one destroyed Garp. Because he remembered it too clearlt.

Every word. Every silence after. Every guilt.

Every failure. That was it. That was enough.

Garp closed his eyes. Because he could not do it. Because he was too late. Because he was a Marine. Because he was a grandfather. Because he was both and neither. He did not want to fight his grandson.

Not really. Never.

Above, Sengoku's eyes widened.

He saw it. He knew and he shouted—

too late.

"GARP—!"

Luffy punched. Straight forward. With everything. Not hate. Not victory. Only desperation. Only tears. Only please move.

The punch landed.

Garp was sent flying. Crashing down from the bridge. Falling into the plaza below.

The Hero of the Marines defeated by his own heart.

Silence. Across the battlefield. No one moved. No one breathed.

Because everyone understood that Garp had let him pass.

Luffy stood there. Breathing hard. Eyes shaking.

No triumph. Only pain. Only forward.

Because there was no time. Because Ace was still waiting.

And finally after all of it, Luffy reached it.

The execution platform.

Ace.

Right in front of him.
