Chapter 1463 - 788: Child
Jimmy left some cash for Roland to ensure his daily life wouldn't be a problem. As for the source of the cash, there's no need to worry about it. No one could trace anything from the cash anyway, maybe just some slight powder residues or the like, but Roland's daily expenses would definitely not be an issue.
However, the items Roland wanted to take to the Dark Tower World needed careful consideration, especially since the energy for the portal to the Dark Tower World remained a big problem. Fuel was scarce and hard to gather from other places, so he couldn't travel back and forth too many times and needed to prepare everything thoroughly.
Jimmy, on the other hand, didn't think too much about it. With Nia's due date approaching, he was even more nervous than she was. If it weren't for work-related matters at the bureau, he certainly would have stayed at home to keep Nia company.
It's now 2009, and after last year's lengthy subprime crisis, the depressive atmosphere of society has become entirely unstoppable. Whether it's businesses going bankrupt or ordinary people losing jobs, such occurrences have been abundant lately, causing the crime rate in society to further soar and significantly increasing the workload at the FBI.
Jimmy's support team consisted only of him, and for special reasons, he hadn't received a single support mission in over six months, leaving him in a situation where everyone else was busy while he was idle. He noticed that when he went to the office, everyone else was busy with investigations or handling cases except him.
However, he still had to participate in some case briefings from time to time. Although these cases didn't require his involvement, as part of the management among field agents, he needed to understand them. This was also Dave's intention, ensuring that Jimmy didn't completely disappear from the office, making his presence known one way or another, and this explained why Roland often found only Nia at home when he visited and Jimmy was absent.
Despite Jimmy's infrequent office visits, the odds of Roland visiting precisely when Jimmy wasn't home were truly unfortunate, leaving him to wait on the stairs for several hours.
When Jimmy returned home, he happened to encounter Father Rodney visiting Nia. Jimmy greeted Rodney and sat down next to Nia.
Father Rodney didn't arrive empty-handed. He brought along his inseparable briefcase, and after speaking with Jimmy and Nia, he started wandering around the entire house with an Old Bible, including the basement, performing simple purification ceremonies.
Father Rodney did show some curiosity about the clutter in the basement, but Jimmy brushed him off. There was no need to mention things to Father Rodney, particularly since revealing the presence of a portal to another world here might lead to troublesome thoughts of conquering parallel worlds.
Jimmy and Nia were accustomed to Father Rodney's actions. Since they had moved into this house, Father Rodney visited roughly once a month. Jimmy knew the reason: Father Rodney aimed to prevent any mishaps during Nia's pregnancy that could impact the unborn child. Yet, to Nia, it seemed as though Rodney acted as an exorcist unofficially associated with the Church, specifically invited by Jimmy to pray for their safety, thus taking credit away from the Church.
Of course, this wasn't happening for free. Father White and Father Rodney had already discussed with Jimmy that after the baby's birth, Father Rodney would host the baptism and become the child's godfather.
Though Nia wasn't a believer, she maintained a respectful stance towards religion, so when Jimmy proposed this arrangement to her, she didn't object. At least during her pregnancy, she acknowledged the Church's care for their family, and Jimmy's influence within the Church was something he could be proud of.
After Father Rodney left, Jimmy went to his study. Although he had rushed back from the office, it somewhat interfered with his work. However, his home laptop had been reported and processed for security by the IT department, allowing him to directly access the FBI database and review previous case briefing materials. Even if it was to justify his salary, he felt he should at least take a look.
As the due date approached, Nia found it increasingly difficult to go out on her own, so Jimmy took an extended leave to stay home. Besides hiring a dedicated maid, Nia's mother also visited and stayed for a day or two every few days. Fortunately, the new house had enough rooms; otherwise, it would indeed have been challenging to arrange.
The North Hill Medical Center, renowned for its exceptional mother and baby care services, was a top-tier institution, and general people found it difficult to get an appointment. But for Kevin, this wasn't a big issue.
Early on, when Kevin learned about Nia's pregnancy, he began arrangements. Finding a suitable mother and child center was no problem for Kevin, and the concern of them not accommodating the chief of NYPD was nonexistent. After all, this was New York, a place with many wealthy individuals, yet only one NYPD chief responsible for security, someone who also had good ties with the mayor.
Jimmy, lacking experience, could only rely entirely on Kevin's arrangements.
