Chapter 1440 - 776: Leaving (Part 2)
Chapter 1440 - 776: Leaving (Part 2)
Roland cleaned out his bag, keeping only his gear, along with a few clothes he found here. Jimmy watched Roland packing his backpack and suddenly said, "Roland!"
Roland turned to look at Jimmy, who pointed at his clothes: "I think you'd better change your clothes. This outfit is a bit too conspicuous."
Roland was still wearing the clothes from the Dark Tower World as he was searching for that Spider Monster earlier. He was familiar with them, and they didn't affect his movements. After getting injured, he was too lazy to change.
A black leather jacket, with a brown vest and blue-gray shirt underneath, jeans, leather boots, a worn brown belt, and a gun holster. The belt held spare bullets, and the holster had two revolvers. It was clear that Roland cherished his clothes. Although worn, they weren't significantly damaged; the only notable damage was a cut in the pant leg for easier bandaging.
It's unclear if this outfit is special in the Dark Tower World, but in modern society, it's definitely eye-catching. If Jimmy were to take Roland to a public place, they'd surely attract attention.
Perhaps it's more suited for travel and combat, but it doesn't match modern urban or outdoor attire styles at all.
Roland looked down, shrugged, and began to change with the clothes he'd previously found, skipping the pants for now. Having lived on Earth for a long time, he knew what people usually wore daily here, but when alone, he didn't care to adjust his outfit.
As Roland organized his clothes and backpack, Jimmy turned to look outside. It was already dark. This place wasn't the familiar Little Rock or New York. Traveling at night wasn't ideal, but to prevent Roland's wound from worsening, they had to head for a big city quickly, meaning traveling under the cover of darkness.
Jimmy first put his suitcase into the car trunk, then, carrying a backpack in one hand, he helped Roland out of the house. As he opened the back door and was about to let Roland in, he was startled and dodged to the side. Both Roland and Jimmy fell to the ground as a strand of spider silk landed lightly on the car with a "snap."
Without getting up, Jimmy immediately drew his revolver, pointing it at the roof. Roland wasn't slow either, drawing his gun and aiming at the roof as well. "Bang, bang, bang!" Jimmy fired three shots. A shadow on the roof retreated quickly.
"Keep yourself safe," Jimmy shouted, quickly getting up and, holding the revolver, rushed to the back of the house. He had locked onto that shadow. Judging by its movement method and the thin lines around, it was another Spider Monster. Those thin lines must be its legs. There was more than just the one Roland killed. They had been careless.
Chasing after it, Jimmy wondered where this Spider Monster came from. Roland had been active here for days, and he had been here for several hours. Why did it appear now?
The spider didn't move in a straight line but shifted between the house and the ground. Jimmy had to climb over a fence to pursue it. Finally, he saw the spider crawl into a house through a window.
Outside the house, Jimmy watched the Spider Monster inside. It didn't stay on the floor but curled up at the roof. Jimmy didn't enter; instead, after assessing the angle, he squatted and shot directly at the corner of the roof through the window.
After three shots and switching to another gun, the Spider Monster fell from the roof. Jimmy stood up and emptied his cylinder into it, finally halting its movement, though its legs still twitched a bit.
Jimmy looked around, focusing on the roof and similar areas, confirming no immediate threats before climbing through the window into the room. He turned on his flashlight to examine the Spider Monster on the ground, then illuminated the walls, looking for the switch. Only after turning on the lights did he observe the Spider Monster from all angles.
A gray and black spider, its body about the size of those Jimmy had seen in the caverns. Its legs were long. Jimmy kicked them open and found they stretched over two meters, yet they were thin and not as bulky as its body. For such a large creature, capturing humans seemed not difficult at all.
Jimmy looked up, noticing that the corner where the spider had hidden was webbed into a space, apparently its hiding spot.
The reason Jimmy hadn't noticed it when entering the village was that he had no idea what had transpired here, nor how massive this Spider Monster was. At the time, he only checked if the room had people or danger, never bothering to look at the ceiling.
Another problem was that Roland only knew of one Spider Monster, so he was always searching and hunting that one. Now, with a second appearing, could there be a third, a fourth?
Jimmy cursed, stood up, and left the house. Looking around as he walked towards his car, he saw Roland leaning against it, right arm holding a gun aimed at the surrounding rooftops. Seeing Jimmy approach, Roland shouted, "Did you find it?"
Jimmy: "Yeah, killed one." Returning to the car, Jimmy looked at Roland and asked, "Roland, how many spiders are there exactly?"
Roland shook his head, holstering his revolver, "I don't know. I followed one here and kept chasing it. I also don't know how many are actually here."
Jimmy glanced around, "Damn it. Roland, I think we might need to wait a bit before leaving. I need to check around. It's best to eliminate them all. If they breed excessively or leave, the consequences would be dire."
Roland nodded. Jimmy's earlier actions showed his keen senses, danger intuition, and decent shooting skills. His speed and strength seemed better too, at least much improved from their previous encounter. He looked at Jimmy and said, "Can you handle it alone? Need any help?"
Jimmy: "No need. Head back inside the house, find a safe room. Checking this place shouldn't take too long."
While speaking, Jimmy opened the trunk, took out a gear bag from the suitcase, grabbed two handfuls of .44 Magnum bullets for his pocket, emptied the revolver's spent shells, reloaded, and helped Roland back into the house they had just been in.
Jimmy had already inspected it, ensuring it was free from any immediate dangers. It was deemed safe.
Jimmy helped Roland to the sofa and said, "Be careful. I think apart from us, nobody else is around, so..."
Roland smiled slightly, "Don't worry about me. Go on."
Watching Jimmy turn and leave the house, Roland drew his two revolvers and placed them on his lap, staying vigilant while pondering how to convince Jimmy about returning to the Dark Tower World. Persuading him wasn't easy, but dragging him back wasn't right either. A proper conversation was necessary.
Once outside, Jimmy began moving along the central road. This time, he knew what he sought, focusing on each house's corners and any unusual shadows. If the Spider Monster hadn't moved, it would manifest as an irregular object, making such shadows relatively easy to identify.
The village wasn't large, with only a dozen or so houses. Within this range, Jimmy didn't worry about any house being beyond his Heart Eye Vision. There was no need to enter the houses; as long as he carefully observed from outside, there shouldn't be any issue.
After several rounds back and forth, Jimmy ensured no Spider Monster signs in any house or observable underground spots. Then, he returned to the house where Roland was, picked him up, and set off to leave.
