Chapter 1438 775: The Reason_2

After discussing the most important matters, there was nothing else that needed to be kept secret. The two of them left the study and returned to the living room, where the whole family chatted and watched TV together, occasionally making fun of the shows. The family really had a good time.

After two days of rest, Jimmy once again called Roland. This time, the call went through, but Roland couldn't come to New York just yet. He needed a few more days of rest in Maine.

Jimmy didn't wait any further. Roland had no idea of his current location and couldn't reach out to anyone outside, so he couldn't provide a specific route. Jimmy contacted the hacker the hotel had previously referred to him, asking for Roland's phone location, and then bought a ticket to Bangor, Maine.

Bangor is the second-largest city in Maine, with a population of only a few hundred thousand. Maine is known for its vast and sparsely populated lands, very different from cities like New York.

However, since Bangor is considered a big city, it does have an airport. Jimmy got off the plane, rented a car at the airport, and hurried to a remote small town in the northwest.

Roland was certainly in trouble and couldn't say much over the phone. Jimmy was unsure how long he'd have to stay here, so he brought his luggage and gear.

Jimmy had received permission from Dave for a month's leave. When he returned from Los Angeles, he didn't put his gear bag back in the office for safekeeping. Instead, he packed everything into his suitcase for the trip. While it looked a bit daunting, it was okay for air travel since the gear was checked in.

In fact, Roland was mistaken when he said he was in Bangor, Maine. He was actually quite far from Bangor, though the exact area—city or suburb—was unclear.

Maine's terrain was good, and Jimmy was fast. He finally arrived at Roland's phone location before dark, which was a tiny village with just a dozen or so houses.

This small village was very remote. After leaving the state highway, there was quite a journey on a small road. Along the way, Jimmy saw some rundown buildings on a distant mountain. Apart from its nice natural environment, he didn't notice anything special about the place.

As soon as he entered the village, he noticed something was wrong. Driving up the road, he didn't see any people in the houses on either side.

Roland was already standing at the door waiting for Jimmy. Jimmy waved from the car window, only to notice Roland's pants were missing a leg, and his leg was wrapped in bandages. Frowning, he parked the car in front of the house, got out, and walked to the back to open the trunk, "Roland, what happened to your leg? Are you hurt?"

Roland stood there looking at Jimmy: "Just a minor injury. Do you have a first aid kit with you?"

Jimmy took out his suitcase: "Yes, let's get inside. I need to check it out."

Roland turned and walked into the house with Jimmy following, reaching the sofa. Jimmy pulled a dagger from his pocket, cut the bandages open, and realized there was a big problem. It was a puncture wound that pierced a hole on the side of the calf. Roland had only cleaned it briefly and applied some unknown ointment.

Jimmy: "What happened? What is this ointment?"

Roland: "It's an ointment for treating stab wounds. I brought it from over there."

Jimmy looked up at Roland: "It doesn't seem effective, the wound is already showing signs of inflammation. You need to go to the hospital. Let me change it for you first."

Jimmy opened the suitcase, took out the gear bag. Inside, there was a small medical kit for emergency care. He first used a tourniquet to secure the calf, then cleaned Roland's wound, applied a bandage, and loosened the tourniquet slightly so the blood could slowly return to normal flow.

Jimmy: "This is just emergency treatment, we should still go to the hospital for further care. What exactly happened? This isn't a gunshot wound."

Roland watched Jimmy busy treating him without saying anything. After Jimmy finished, Roland finally spoke about how he encountered the Spider Monster, found everyone in the village missing, and how he arrived there.

He had rested a bit in the village and returned to a small cave, tracing the spider monster's blood trail for a long time until he found a house that was a warehouse with a cellar. Even though the blood trail disappeared, it was clear the cellar was where the spider monster hid.

Roland then went to another house, found a flashlight, and climbed down the ladder on the cellar wall. The large hole slanted to the side, where he noticed many cobweb traces, which confirmed his hunch that it was indeed the spider monster's lair.

The cave was very deep. When Roland went inside to investigate with the flashlight, the spider monster ambushed him. Although he managed to kill the spider monster in the confined space, his calf was still pierced by its leg. Afterward, he treated the wound himself and received Jimmy's call.

Jimmy: "So the spider monster is dead? What about the missing people?"

Roland: "I didn't search deep within the cave, but these people are probably beyond saving, it's been several days..."

Jimmy glanced outside the house: "There are quite a few houses here, so there probably weren't too few people. This many people going missing is a big deal, hard to explain. Where is that cave? I want to see it."

Roland: "It's in the farthest house at the end of the village, beside a small warehouse, that's where it is."

Jimmy nodded and stood up, "You should stay here and rest, I'll just take a look and come back."

Roland shook his head, "No, let's go together. I'll wait for you at the top." He reached out, and Jimmy helped Roland stand up, and they chatted while slowly walking toward that house.

Jimmy didn't act out of sympathy. However, given the severity of the situation here, with Roland already having stayed for several days, he would surely become the focus of suspicion post-incident. He needed to get to the bottom of this to determine the next step.

Jimmy: "By the way, Roland, what is the Black Rainbow?"

Roland: "It's a form of magical energy. In our world, there's a legend that Gann created the material world and several parallel realities. At the dark edges of the world appeared the first mages, with one calling himself Merlin.

As the greatest mage, Merlin transformed his power into thirteen rainbow spheres, each with a different ability. I'm not a mage, so I don't know much about this, but there aren't many rainbow spheres left in the world now.

That's one of the reasons I want to find you, Jimmy, I hope you can come back with me."

Jimmy supported Roland as they walked, "Why?"

Roland: "Our world is on the brink of decline, with many anomalies already occurring, increased geological activity, and numerous space-time rifts connecting with other universes. A mage I encountered once told me they suspect an energy imbalance in the world. If the balance is broken, it could further accelerate the world's decline."

Merlin's rainbow spheres are the source of magic, and maybe by bringing the rainbow sphere out of our world, it caused the imbalance. Regardless of the exact cause, I want to try."

Jimmy frowned: "To your world?"

Roland: "I just want to try. You've inherited the Black Rainbow, maybe accompanying me back would help restore balance."

Suddenly hearing this, Jimmy was still a bit dazed, "Roland, your request... let me think about it. It's not an easy decision to make. Is that the warehouse up ahead? Let's focus on the immediate matter first."
