Chapter 1368 740: Investigation Stalled (Part 2)
Back in his office, Mahong frowned slightly. How did Jimmy find out information that even he couldn't get?
After considering for a while, Mahong decided to chat with Jimmy. He took out a phone from the drawer, entered Jimmy's number, and dialed it.
Jimmy initially planned to reject the call from an unfamiliar number but thought for a moment and picked it up. Sure enough, Mahong's voice came through, "It's me, what information did you get from your side?"
Mahong was very meticulous, even choosing another phone to make calls. Even without tracing, Jimmy knew it was an unregistered number, "Ruiz called me earlier, telling me to continue my vacation and return to work after the Christmas holidays. He arranged a new position for me without explaining the reason and position before hanging up."
Jimmy simply described Ruiz's words, without adding his own speculation. Mahong thought for a moment and said: "Is it possible there's no conspiracy here?"
Jimmy: "You know I've had similar experiences before. I was transferred to the Public Affairs Office and stayed there for several months."
Mahong: "I just asked around, and nobody has received any information about you."
Jimmy: "I feel that even a job transfer should involve a lot of people. Everyone not receiving any information is the most abnormal thing."
Thinking for a moment, Jimmy continued: "Let's look at it from a different angle. Since I've got a new position, there should be a new team leader in the Homicide Team here. Mark and Julia don't have enough experience and status to fill the team leader's position, certainly, someone was transferred from elsewhere.
Help me find out who might have been transferred here. No matter how much conspiracy there is, the person gaining benefits is likely behind it, or one of them."
Mahong: "Got it. Where are you now?"
Jimmy: "Charleston, South Carolina, on vacation with Nia."
Mahong: "OK, continue vacationing there, don't come back yet. Goodbye."
Jimmy hung up the phone, thought for a moment, and said to Nia: "Darling, let's go shopping instead of going to the beach. Let's take a carriage to the city center."
Nia, surprised, said: "Aren't you going to contact again? It's not confirmed yet..."
Jimmy: "It's no problem, let Mahong handle it. He'll help investigate. I trust him."
Nia nodded. She was indeed acquainted with Mahong, though not very familiar. Since Jimmy said so, he must be on that best friend and partner level of someone in the FBI to Jimmy. This is good; otherwise, just relying on Jimmy's phone contact might mean they couldn't go out, maybe even urgently return to New York.
Nia: "Should we book a flight back?"
Jimmy: "Not yet. Let's enjoy ourselves and wait for news before deciding. Alright, let's pack and head out."
The hotel Jimmy and Nia stayed at was not far from the beach. They called for a ride from the front desk and went to the city's historical district. They were lucky enough to catch a carriage tour, weaving through cobblestone streets and ancient oak trees, experiencing the city's historical charm.
Jimmy didn't know much about these historical buildings, but Nia clearly excelled in history and art courses. She marveled at the exquisite archway and Georgia-style architecture with iron balconies, captivated by the Victorian-style stained glass windows and elegant lintels, occasionally whispering to Jimmy about the architectural features, filled with longing in her tone. Unfortunately, such old buildings are sparse in New York, scattered around the city, not densely showcasing the heavy sense of history here.
This was truly beyond Jimmy's expectations as Nia rarely showed this interest before, mostly into sports and shopping, enjoying old movies, and occasionally visiting Broadway for opera with Jimmy, showing no expressed fondness for historical buildings.
He thought for a moment, leaned closer to Nia, and said: "You know I have a little farm. How about building an antique-style villa there?"
Nia thought for a moment and shook her head, "I remember it's in Montana, right? It's too far; we couldn't possibly live there permanently."
Jimmy shrugged: "It's always managed by a management company. I seldom go there. Forget it then. Later, we'll look around New York for some, as we just need a place to relax and holiday on weekends."
Jimmy and Nia had initially planned to buy a big house after marriage, but with the honeymoon and all sorts of busy affairs, this plan kept being postponed. Since Nia has this interest, maybe they could find some old farms with a sense of age around New York. After all, the Northeast was where the settlers first arrived and occupied. As long as they're willing to spend money, real estate agents could certainly find something.
At dusk, Charleston's Christmas lights gradually lit up, turning the city center into a fairy-tale world. They went to a locally renowned Southern cuisine restaurant. Nia tried a richly flavored stew, while Jimmy devoured roasted lamb with mint sauce. Afterward, they enjoyed Charleston's famous sweet mud pie for dessert.
While walking after dinner, they stumbled into an antique shop. The store was filled with antiques collected from around the United States, from old silverware to weathered sofas, each item carrying the imprint of time.
Nia was drawn to an old police badge, calling Jimmy over. The shop owner initially explaining to Jimmy the Colt Single Action Army revolver "Pioneer" also followed over. This police badge belonged to a sheriff during the West's times, designed in a hexagonal round shape with brass material, feeling quite tactile.
Jimmy and Nia didn't pay attention to the price, quickly completing their purchases with a swipe.
This 19th-century revolver is considered an antique, not requiring police registration, just needing an antique certificate for the transaction. Jimmy and Nia took the extra box provided by the shop owner and walked out of the antique store.
At night, the two finally returned to their hotel after a full day of activities.
Jimmy's phone didn't ring again today, indicating Mahong's investigation hasn't yielded results. This kind of thing shouldn't push for progress, exposing the investigation may lead to other problems, even implicate Mahong, so even if slower, Jimmy could accept it, as this is much more discreet than him going back to investigate himself, his presence at the Manhattan office is too conspicuous.
Jimmy and Nia have now temporarily stopped using birth control measures, but they might just be too unlucky, never succeeding in getting pregnant, which indeed is a kind of regret. This has made Jimmy and Nia more energetic together, fortunately, he has amazing endurance, otherwise, it'd probably be exhausting.
However, even though the hotel's soundproofing was good, it wasn't perfect—neighbors might report them for nuisance.
On Christmas Eve, Jimmy and Nia ended their vacation and returned to New York. Today, they were going to Kevin's home, so after returning, they immediately tidied up, changed clothes, and headed to Kevin's with gifts.
Living nearby has its advantages, when they don't want to cook or dine outside, they just call beforehand to go to their mother-in-law's for a free meal. Now, when Jimmy comes, he feels completely relaxed, treating it as his own home.
Placing gifts directly on the sofa, Jimmy pushed open the study room door, turned on the ventilation, took Kevin's alcohol from the shelf, poured himself a glass, pulled out a cigar, and relaxed in the study, waiting for Kevin to return.
