Chapter 1367 - 740: The Investigation Stalls

Chapter 1367 - 740: The Investigation Stalls

Jimmy looked around the environment, there were too many people here, and the matter he needed to discuss might be very important, requiring a quieter place.

Nia watched Jimmy frown and nervously asked, "How about we go back to the hotel first? It's quieter there."

Jimmy frowned and nodded, fortunately, the hotel wasn't far away, and they arrived at the hotel room by walking slowly.

Jimmy put down the things he was carrying, immediately took out his phone and dialed Mark's number, while Nia went to the small refrigerator, took out a bottle of ice-cold beer, opened it and handed it to Jimmy, then began to organize the things she bought at one side.

Jimmy: "Mark, are you at the office?"

Mark: "Yes, is there an investigation you need?"

Jimmy: "No, just wanted to ask if there's been anything major at the office lately?"

Mark: "Haven't heard of anything, hold on." Mark asked Julia beside him, as a woman, she could often hear things at the office that weren't convenient for Mark to know, but Julia also shook her head, everything was normal at the office.

Mark: "Everything's normal, the biggest thing these days is related to you, about our colleague's funeral."

Jimmy: "Related to me? Besides that."

Mark: "No, as far as I know, there's nothing concerning you. When you were seconded to headquarters, Tim Dunn from the administration department came looking for you, but left knowing you were on a business trip, that was more than a month ago."

Jimmy: "OK, keep an eye out for me, if anyone's looking for me, let me know promptly."

Mark: "No problem. By the way, when are you coming back?"

Jimmy: "It'll be a few more days, I'm on vacation recently, make sure you all stay safe during cases."

After hanging up the phone, Jimmy wasn't relieved but felt even more worried.

The call from Ruiz only informed him, without giving specific reasons or a new position, everything hasn't been publicly announced yet, why do it this way? The key is, why was there no prior rumor about his transfer?

Jimmy played with the phone in his hand, Mark and Julia, though newbies, weren't clueless, they usually kept an eye on office gossip, even joking about it in the office, if they hadn't heard a single thing, then the news might have been suppressed, or only circulated at a certain level.

Jimmy knew quite a few people in higher ranks, but inquiring about such sensitive matters, those casual acquaintances wouldn't suffice, Dave's level was too high, a phone call wouldn't be appropriate, only a face-to-face talk would do, as for David, he took over the anti-gang unit, which was full of Ruiz's former subordinates, whatever he could say to Jimmy needed consideration.

Ultimately, Jimmy could only reach out to Mahong, his office was near Ruiz's, maybe he knew something.

Jimmy dug out Mahong's number and dialed, but no one answered, at such a time, failing to reach someone was truly frustrating.

Luckily, ten minutes later Mahong called back, "Jimmy, what made you think of calling me? What's up?"

Jimmy: "Nothing much, I'm still on vacation, haven't returned yet."

Mahong: "Tell me, what's up?"

Jimmy: "Has anything happened at the office lately? Concerning me."

Mahong was silent for a few seconds, "I haven't heard anything, did something happen?"

Jimmy: "I'm wondering if someone's investigating me?"

Mahong: "Give me some time, I'll get back to you."

With that, he hung up the phone. Mahong looked at the computer screen with the phone in hand; he was on a mission, had just been doing something, so his phone was left in the surveillance vehicle.

Though Jimmy hadn't said much, someone investigating him wasn't a trivial matter, knowing Jimmy well, if someone truly was investigating him, big trouble would surely follow his return to the office.

However, he hadn't received any news, nor did anyone inquire about Jimmy, it was either nonexistent, or very secretive and undisclosed.

Mahong said to the Black man beside him, "Jones, keep an eye out, I'm stepping out for a bit."

Jones nodded, knowing Mahong had just been on the phone with Jimmy, they all knew things weren't normal now, letting Mahong handle things outside wouldn't be an issue.

Jones had been with the white-collar team for several years, rich in case-handling experience, so he could manage without Mahong.

Mahong walked outside, took out a piece of chewing gum from his pocket and put it in his mouth, while heading toward the nearby coffee shop to buy some coffee, pondering if there was anything he overlooked, as certain matters unlinked to him might slip his mind.

Indeed, quite a few things had happened in New York in these two months without Jimmy, but nothing remarkably memorable for Mahong, since his duties didn't overlap with Jimmy's, much like with Peter, once Mahong joined the white-collar team, he mostly dealt with financial and art-related cases, and even if violent robberies occurred, there were usually few injuries, and rarely any murders, so he hadn't contacted the Homicide Team.

The two teams were somewhat far apart, without regular exchanges, news naturally dwindled.

Holding three cups of coffee, Mahong got into the surveillance vehicle, told Jones he was leaving, and returned to the office, leaving the scene to Jones and the newbies.

Though not new to the Manhattan office, Mahong had quite a few acquaintances, and on the way, he had already thought of reasons, naturally having chance encounters with a few people, chatting and getting some insights, yet still didn't gain much information.
