Chapter 1313 - 714: Lost Gun (Part 2)
So Cano must have gone somewhere yesterday, with the scent of tobacco and mixed leaves, it was clearly a gang hideout.
Being the local snake, Cano certainly knows much more than Jimmy and his group, knows way more people too. If Jimmy and his team can rely on some former criminals to deduce the suspect's possibilities, Cano would figure it out faster, at least narrowing it down to a range. He must have gone to find the right people last night.
Jimmy and his team watched the police station from afar, waiting until Cano left, then followed him.
It turned out that Jimmy and his team's judgment was correct. It wasn't until nearly ten o'clock in the evening, when the outside was completely dark, that the car lights lit up at Cano's house's entrance. Jimmy drove without lights, following behind, heading towards the outskirts of the reserve.
The town still appeared quite quiet at night, but as they moved outward, Jimmy noticed it became more lively. Various colored lights began to appear frequently, indicating each building was in business.
In these places, Jimmy saw very few residential houses; most were single-story, with only a few two-story buildings. After rounding a few houses, Cano stopped outside a bar, got out of the car, looked around, adjusted his clothes, and headed towards the bar.
Jimmy and his group also came over, parked the car outside the bar. Jimmy watched Cano tightly from the driver's seat as he went in. Fortunately, there weren't too many people here yet, and although he could only see various silhouettes, it was enough for Jimmy to keep a close eye on Cano from the entrance.
Jimmy: "Hope, interested in going in to take a look?"
Hope looked at Jimmy: "Sure, together?"
Jimmy: "No, you're just going for a drink. Don't get near Cano; go in, have a drink, and relax a bit without alerting them."
Hope at least looked Caucasian, not too different from those around. No matter where Jimmy, an Asian, went, he would stand out too much.
Hope removed his tie, then slightly messed up his hair, unbuttoned his cuffs a little, making himself look more relaxed, nodded at Jimmy, got out of the car, and headed towards the bar.
It's a nice move, Hope surely has a lot of experience; looking casual like this is less intimidating compared to dressed-up agents, appearing as just a middle-aged man out to relax, not looking for trouble.
Though Jimmy had frequented bars many times, he certainly wouldn't have prepared like this in advance, making his impact lesser. But his Asian appearance naturally wasn't very aggressive, so normally people wouldn't pay much attention. However, this was a reserve; it's understandable for Caucasians to come here to play, but an Asian appearing suddenly would be like a panda in a crowd.
Hope was still within Jimmy's observation range after entering the bar. Like Jimmy, he went to the bar counter; judging by the glass size, he probably ordered a beer, but Cano, who had entered earlier, wasn't at the bar. He was at a table in a corner.
Had there been more people inside, Jimmy might have lost him quickly. Just when he turned to talk to Hope, Cano shifted his position a bit.
With Hope observing inside, Jimmy could relax a little. He looked at the house nearby, seeing some people surrounding a few tables—a small casino. Of course, this "small" is relative to those large city casinos; casinos at the reserve's edge were usually such small ones and mostly didn't have real casino licenses, just gang-controlled small outposts, similar to underground city casinos.
Beyond that, Jimmy couldn't see, but it's okay; he could check it out when passing by later.
Quickly, Hope came out of the bar and returned to the car. "Cano's inside drinking with people; though I couldn't hear everything, it should have nothing to do with us. Seems like he's with friends."
Jimmy: "Who are they?"
Hope: "Ordinary people; they didn't look like gang members, though I did see a revolver exposed on one person's waist. This suggests they might be local ranchers or cowboys."
Jimmy: "Then we don't need to pay attention; let's leave it for now."
Jimmy started the car, preparing to head back, but Hope suddenly said, "Wait, there's something unconfirmed. Just now, the bartender mentioned to another person that someone new had arrived nearby, suggesting a place to relax. I didn't ask in detail, but I suspect they meant women."
Jimmy stopped, pondering, "Did you hear a location?"
Hope: "No, but since the bartender mentioned it, it should be nearby."
Jimmy: "Almost a month should be enough time."
Hope: "Yes, so I suspect that might be the case over there."
Jimmy: "But we have no clues to identify her."
Hope also had no solution. They sat in the car, somewhat disheartened by the news.
After a while, Jimmy started the car again and left. "We can't do much as it stands, but I guess we need to investigate thoroughly in the coming days. You blend in easily here, so you'd better handle the investigation."
Hope: "Yeah, but not with this car."
Jimmy: "We'll go back to Albuquerque tomorrow. I suppose Hank's team might have a disguised car to borrow, or we could just get a second-hand car for now."
Hope would lead the next investigation; more than half the people on the reserve were white or Latin American. As long as Hope was cautious, he would easily go unnoticed.
It wasn't Hank who lent them a car, but Steven Gomez because Hank's private car was a bit more expensive, looking a bit out of place on the reserve, whereas Steven's was a pickup, very common in New Mexico, so Hope chose this one, though he'd have to use the department's vehicles for a few days.
Hope's inquiries were effective; in just two days, he figured out there were two places offering sexual services next to that bar, and the one with newcomers, as mentioned by the bartender, was one of them. However, his luck wasn't great; he spent some money and only met a young woman who didn't fit the age profile. According to Hope's description, she was definitely professional, very skilled, so Hope's money was well spent, except she wasn't quite the beauty he fancied.
Next came their actions; Hope played a bored middle-aged man hanging around; he hadn't tidied his beard for days. Coupled with intentional mimicry, he now looked quite similar to the locals, wandering nearby multiple times, while Jimmy watched from afar in the car, observing how the girls left. If someone came to pick them up, Jimmy could follow them.
Everything went perfectly, yet the problem arose on Hope's end. After resting for a day, he went back to the hideout, changed to another technician for service. However, when he was undressing, the woman saw the Glock on the nightstand; when they finished, and the woman was changing clothes, she took the Glock when he wasn't looking.
"Put the gun down." Of course, Hope wasn't completely unguarded, but this was the first time such a situation had occurred. Caught off guard, he could only raise his hand to placate her.
"Let me go, I beg you, I need this." The woman pleaded with Hope, pointing the gun at him, reaching for the door handle, opening the door, and leaving directly.
"Fxxk!" Hope's operating place was next to a motel; Jimmy wasn't far away. He immediately called Jimmy, talking while dressing, then rushed out.
