Chapter 1312 - 714: Lost Gun

Chapter 1312 - 714: Lost Gun

Jimmy hung up the phone but didn't leave the booth. It was a phone booth outside the town, and no one would come here. Jimmy leaned against the phone, pondering Ruiz's words.

Regarding Seventeen, Jimmy didn't actually have much connection with him. He had helped investigate some cases before, but in the end, it was Jimmy who sent him and his gang to prison, forcing him to reveal his identity and return to the FBI.

But later, he returned to the underground world. Although Ruiz and his team had new plans on the surface, it was undeniable that if Seventeen didn't want to go back, others couldn't force a seasoned undercover agent to lose his legitimate identity and continue undercover.

Seventeen chose to return to the underground world. It was his choice, but Jimmy completely disliked Seventeen's style of doing things.

The submarine dock he's currently responsible for has been operational for a while now, surely smuggling all kinds of goods—including drugs, which Jimmy despises the most. Meanwhile, Ruiz and his team haven't had any major success. Essentially, they've provided a temporary channel for the gang. Perhaps the goals they might eventually achieve are good, but for now, what they're doing is no different from the gang.

The benefits some people gained from this channel have nothing to do with Jimmy. He hasn't been involved or profited from it. To solve the current issues involves asking Jimmy to step in, which doesn't sit well with him. The stakeholders of this matter should handle it first. Even if Jimmy gets involved, it would be solely to save an FBI undercover colleague and has nothing to do with Seventeen.

After spending a few minutes in the phone booth, Jimmy came out. From a distance, Hope saw Jimmy step out and started the car to pick him up. They returned to town to continue observing potential targets with the information provided by the police station.

Hope: "Anything happen?"

Jimmy: "Yeah, there's a problem in New York. I'm considering whether to make a trip back."

Hope: "Personal matter?"

Jimmy glanced at Hope, then back at the house nearby. "No, it's a business matter, but it's not much related to my previous department. Let's continue with our case first."

Jimmy had already decided to let Ruiz handle the investigation for now. If Seventeen couldn't hold out for the duration of the investigation, then at most, it would be about avenging him later, unrelated to Seventeen.

Reporting to Ruiz wasn't straightforward. He and Jimmy had a stronger relationship compared to others in the bureau. Calling Jimmy was a hope for him to resolve the issue. Jimmy wasn't too worried, though. Ruiz wasn't a young gun; he was communicable and wouldn't abruptly cut ties over a disagreement.

Jimmy and his team visited some former criminals, mainly to observe the environment. If they encountered someone, they would chat under any pretext, even just to check on the former criminals' living conditions.

However, they didn't gain much. Most people were not at home. Jimmy checked their houses through Heart Eye Vision but found no hidden basements or prisons. Discovering hidden spaces or weapons in the house was normal, as New Mexico had a high gun ownership rate. It wasn't unusual for them to have a Ghost Gun or two, and Jimmy wasn't there to handle those cases.

Soon, they finished the investigation in the small town. Jimmy checked the time and said to Hope, "Let's head back to the hotel for some rest. Remember what we talked about this morning? Tonight we're following Cano."

Hope: "No problem. You rest first. I'll keep an eye on the area near the police station."

Jimmy looked at Hope in surprise: "Are you sure?"

Hope nodded: "I'm okay with it."

Jimmy: "OK, I'll find you in three hours."

Hope drove off. Jimmy didn't return to the hotel but headed to a nearby phone store. Pre-paid phones were available everywhere, and it wasn't his first time buying one.

Back in the hotel room, Jimmy called Ruiz. His investigation was at a critical moment, and he couldn't leave for now, especially with a headquarters agent accompanying him. Under these circumstances, he needed a good reason to head back to New York for the investigation.

Ruiz was somewhat surprised but didn't press the matter. He would arrange for others to conduct the investigation, and if assistance was needed later, he hoped Jimmy could come back to help them.

Naturally, Jimmy didn't refuse. Ruiz's request wasn't to save Seventeen but to avenge him. For the Manhattan office, when it was time to act, Jimmy would undoubtedly be their most reliable partner.

The matter was temporarily out of Jimmy's hands. He placed his phone on the bedside table and lay down to rest for just over two hours. It was quite tense since the night's tracking operation would undoubtedly fall primarily on him, while Hope would likely just rest in the vehicle.

Cano's daytime routine was quite normal, except in the afternoon, when he didn't leave the police station, and Hope never saw him go out. He only once went to a police car, allowing Hope to confirm he was still in the police station.

Seeing Cano's condition in the morning, they had evaluated that he went somewhere rather than indulged in certain habits. Seeing Cano function normally at work convinced them he wasn't using substances; otherwise, he wouldn't be able to maintain his mental state so long and would've been out of it by now.
