Chapter 424: Coco’s woes
Chapter 424: Coco’s woes
"I don’t know about you, but for me, I think you’re starting to catch feelings." Jacques said, taking a sip from her tea.
Coco invited herself inside of Jacques when saw Jacques waving Renaldo and Jonathan off at their gates, their eyes clashing immediately which prompted Coco to walk briskly towards her.
Two days had passed since that day in the cafe and it has been a day since three out of the four mediators had started working.
The house became quiet early in the morning until evening because the three of them got home later than Coco’s usual arrival time— it was surprising yesterday, but Coco couldn’t do anything about it.
She was happy for them, but she was extra worried for Quizen’s safety.
So, before she went home, she decided to walk towards the city square— yes, walk! She sent a letter to Sinclair this morning that she doesn’t want the carriage to drop her off at the guild and thankfully, the hybrid didn’t comment on it.
The distance between the house and the guild was merely ten minutes at maximum so when she walked today, it only took her twenty five minutes.
However, she didn’t feel like walking inside the house yet.
On the way to the city square, she saw Jacques by the gate of their house and when Jacques also saw her, she decided to linger around for a while.
Once she was inside, the words she held back from spouting in the husbands’ faces came pouring out.
Which leads them to their current situation.
"Pardon me?" Coco blinked, her eyebrows shooting up to her hairline out of shock. "Me? Starting to catch feelings for them?"
Jacques raised the tea cup to her lips and took a sip, loud and unabashed, raising a single eyebrow as if she was saying ’am I wrong?’ without actually saying the words out loud.
"Psh!" Coco scoffed and waved her hand dismissively. "That’s impossible! I will never catch feelings for anyone. I’m already too old to consider that!"
Jacques shot Coco an amused look, snorting. "Old? You? My dear Coco, no one’s too old for love."
"Nah, I am old for love." Coco insisted, frowning at her. "Besides, I’ve already given up on it because if I’m destined to have someone, I would have them in my previous life."
Previous life.. Yes, after a long while, Coco now feels comfortable to talk about her old life.
Has she grieved fully? Not yet, but she’s learning how to deal with the reality of her new life— and if she wants to be strong, she will have to accept what happened to her first.
How can she accept what happened to her? Of course, by talking to someone about it.
However, as she speaks about it to Jacques, she doesn’t feel that familiar heaviness in her chest and feel quite alright upon mentioning it.
"Coco.." Jacques’ trailed off softly, her gaze losing their playful glint.
She felt bad for indirectly making Coco mention her old life when she knows how hard it must have been for her— the look on Coco’s face after she mentioned her not finding love in her previous life looked quite crestfallen.
"What I’m trying to say is.. Love is not for someone like me." Coco quickly shifted the topic, not liking where the conversation was going.
Jacques forced a smile and nodded her head. "That’s what you believe, but I do know that you’re capable of loving."
"Perhaps, but it won’t happen in this life." Coco mumbled, shifting in her seat as she frowned, averting her gaze from Jacques and focusing on the coffee sitting before her.
"You like them at least, right?" Jacques asked, changing the topic as quickly as she could.
"As friends?" Coco perked up reluctantly. "Then, yes."
"That’s great to hear." Jacques smiled softly and took a sip from her tea again. "Then, are you going to proceed with the divorce you speak of earlier?"
While Coco was pouring her thoughts out, she mentioned briefly that she was planning to divorce them soon for their safety and peace of mind, along with the fact that she’s saving money for the things she will do for the divorce.
"Of course." Coco sighed. "They need to get away from me."
Coco spoke as if she was a threat to the four of them which made Jacques slightly upset.
"Don’t say that." Jacques chastised as gently as she could. "You’re not the Coco Hughes they married, aren’t you? You don’t have to divorce them unless they want to."
"They want to divorce me, Jacques." Coco stated bluntly, picking up the mug and chugging the coffee down as if it was an alcoholic beverage.
"They wouldn’t have looked for work if they weren’t planning on it, would they? I just know that they’re dreading the thought of me going home." Coco mumbled, putting the mug down with a little force.
Jacques stared at Coco, her eyebrows furrowing.
From what she observed while she was staying with them, the husbands looked quite enamored by Coco and seemed like they would get rid of anyone that would try to whisk her away.
Well, not all of them, but the first and second husband sure did give her that feeling.
"You can’t be too sure." Jacques tried to change Coco’s mind. "They probably just wanted to help you with the money— just like me and Renaldo! We both work because we want money."
Coco looked at Jacques and shook her head. "That’s because you and Renaldo are happily married.."
"You’re happily married, too." Jacques pointed out, but she immediately regretted it when she remembered that Coco wasn’t the actual Coco Hughes that the mediators married.
"As if I am." Coco scoffed once more. "Alhai and Quizen hated my guts, you know?"
"I didn’t know.." Jacques mumbled before biting her tongue.
"Well, now you know." Coco grumbled, drinking the remaining coffee in her mug and sighed after she was done. "I just don’t want them to continue being unhappy.."
