Chapter 379: A surprise and a reward
Chapter 379: A surprise and a reward
The morning feast soon passed, the food got devoured by the exhausted and famished aspiring hunters in under ten minutes— each of them inhaling the meat like there was no tomorrow.
By the time one of the kitchen staff went inside the room to refill their water, she was greeted by the sight of Lukas letting out a loud, undignified burp.
"Watch your manners, Lukas!" Zuyo chastised, fed up at such an undignified manner he got to witness.
"I’m watching my manners, alright." The sacred beast halfheartedly agreed, making the people around him let out a sigh of relief, but they simultaneously groaned when Lukas reached for the remaining half of the tough crocodile’s tail— barehanded.
Coco could only feel bad about them because they didn’t know what he was and why he was acting like a beast.
"I have to go." Coco called out, just in time for the woman who came from the kitchen to pour water on her cup. "I’m sure my mediators are waiting for me. They didn’t know I’ll be staying out for this long."
"It must be nice to have someone waiting for you at home." Lukas mumbled, absentmindedly chewing on the crocodile’s tail.
"Yes, it’s nice." Coco agreed to his words and stood up. "Which is why I must go home now."
"Already?" The guild master chimed, raising an eyebrow as he stood up from his seat. "You don’t want to receive your rewards first? Your team and Ms. Myra’s team will be receiving rewards for a job well done."
Everyone perked up at the guild master’s words, their attentions turning to him with their eyebrows shooting up to their hairlines.
"Rewards?"
"My team?"
"We’re included?"
"Shouldn’t it be just Coco and Lukas?"
Yura, Myra, Zuyo, and Julian asked out loud, wondering different things at the same time.
"Why would it be just me and Lukas?" Coco ignored the question of others and raised an eyebrow towards Julian, finding his question a little odd.
"Because the two of you did almost everything by yourselves." Myra answered before Julian could, putting a hand on her hip to show that she was dead serious. "We could barely catch up with you two so it was weird for us to be included."
"And?" Lukas interjected, tossing the bone towards the pile of bones on the edge of the table. "All of you helped."
"Yeah, all of you helped." Coco agreed, nodding her head. "We wouldn’t manage to defeat every monster if you guys weren’t there with us, you know?"
Yura and Myra blinked, exchanging a glance.
It was clear that the two had become closer in just a span of two days due to how they simultaneously turned to Coco, a similar look of admiration crossing their features.
"You’re the best team leader I could ask for."
"You’re the only co-leader I would ever want."
The two said at the same time, making Coco nod her head slowly— confused and surprised at the words they had uttered.
"Okay.." She murmured, then she turned to the guild master. "Wouldn’t this cause a riot among the older hunters? What would they think if the guild master gave rewards to those who had just passed the examination?"
"What would they think?" Mr. Covez raised an eyebrow, echoing Coco’s question.
"Laura." He called and turned to the woman who was about to walk out of the room, causing the woman to stop in her tracks and catch the attention of everyone around her.
"Yes, sir?" Laura turned and lowered her head, showing her respect to the guild master.
"What are your thoughts on these teams’ achievements overnight?" Mr. Covez asked, deciding on going straight to point rather than beating around the bush.
"They are amazing, my good sir." Laura answered, her voice dripping with sincerity and admiration.
The six aspiring hunters looked genuinely shocked— well, no, except Lukas, but the rest looked shocked at what they heard.
"And why are they amazing, Laura?" The guild master asked a follow-up question, encouraging her to say what was lingering on her mind.
"Because they have done quite a feat that no hunters in our guild had ever done before." Laura said, the corner of her lips quirking up into a triumphant smile as she raised her head. "I do believe that they will do more incredible things in the future—"
"But it wasn’t us who did a good job." Julian spoke up, his gaze boring onto Laura’s stares that are laced with an awestruck look.
"That’s what you want to believe." Laura hummed softly, then she turned to the guild master. "May I excuse myself, sir?"
"Sure." Mr. Covez waved her off and faced the aspiring hunters who were having a different reaction to Laura’s words. "Anyway, do you want to receive your rewards or not?"
No one answered him right away, all of them having buried themselves in their own inner turmoil.
"Is it money?" Lukas, on the other hand, couldn’t care less.
"Of course." The guild master said, followed by an amused chuckle. "Isn’t that what hunters are after? The money they get after hunting monsters?"
Lukas didn’t answer, but Coco did.
"Not really." Coco hummed, pushing herself off the table and walked over to the door. "Some of us just want the privilege that hunters get after they pass."
She was speaking on her and Lukas’ behalf, but half of her reason was indeed the money.
However, half of it was the privilege to sell newly hunted meat in the city which will give her more opportunities to get money— actually, yeah, she just wanted money.
"Whatever you say." Mr. Covez hummed and followed behind Coco. "Let’s go to my office, everyone."
Wordlessly, everyone piled out of the room and onto the hall where several eyes zeroed on them the moment they went out of the room.
"It seems like we have to get used to the stares, Coco." The garden fairy said, making Coco aware of the stares.
Unfortunately. Coco agreed, grimacing.
