Chapter 93
Chapter 93
The early morning light filtered through the curtains, soft and golden, but it did little to warm the icy tension in the room. Emma stood near the twins’ playroom door, her arms folded tightly across her chest as Alex paced the living room. His movements were quick, almost agitated, his frustration spilling out in every step he took.
Emma’s breath hitched when Alex finally stopped and turned to face her, his eyes a storm of emotions—anger, hurt, and desperation all swirling together.
“We can’t keep doing this, Emma,” Alex said, his voice strained. “This limbo, this constant uncertainty—it’s killing me.”
Emma’s lips parted, but no words came. She had anticipated this moment for weeks, yet she felt utterly unprepared for the gravity of Alex’s presence, his words, and the ultimatum she could feel looming.
Alex stepped closer, his jaw tightening as he tried to steady his voice. “I need to know, Emma. Where do we stand? Where do I stand?”
Emma’s heart pounded, each beat echoing in her ears. She didn’t know how to answer him. Every word she considered felt like a betrayal—either to Alex, to Thomas, or to herself.
“This isn’t something I can decide overnight,” she said finally, her voice trembling. “Alex, we’ve been through so much. The twins, the foundation, everything—it’s all so tangled. How can you ask me to choose right now?”
Alex shook his head, his frustration bubbling to the surface. “You’ve had plenty of time to think, Emma. It’s not just about me—it’s about our family. The twins deserve stability, and they need to know that their parents are on the same page. But if you’re not sure, if Thomas is even still a consideration, then we have a problem.”
Emma flinched at his words, guilt washing over her. She didn’t want to admit how deep her feelings for Thomas had grown. It felt selfish, especially when Alex was standing here, practically begging for clarity.
“I’m not trying to hurt you, Alex,” she said softly. “I just… I don’t know what the right answer is. I’m scared of making the wrong choice.”
Alex took a deep breath, his fists clenching at his sides. “You don’t know?” he repeated, his voice heavy with disappointment. “I’ve been trying to show you that I’m here, that I want to fix what we had, but you’re still unsure. That tells me everything I need to know.”
“Alex, it’s not that simple,” Emma protested, her voice breaking. “I care about you, I do. But Thomas—”
Alex’s expression darkened at the mention of Thomas, and he cut her off with a sharp motion of his hand. “Don’t. Don’t bring him into this. This is about us, Emma. About our family. I’m asking you, right here and now, to choose. Do you want this family, or do you want him?”
The ultimatum hit Emma like a freight train, knocking the breath out of her. She stared at Alex, her chest heaving as her emotions churned violently within her.
“That’s not fair,” she whispered. “You’re putting me in an impossible position.”
Alex’s eyes softened for a moment, but his voice remained firm. “It’s not impossible. It’s a choice. And I need to know where I stand, Emma. If you can’t commit to us, to our family, then I’ll step back. But I need to know now.”
Tears welled in Emma’s eyes as the weight of his words crushed her. She felt cornered, trapped between two worlds that each demanded a piece of her heart.
“I need time,” she said desperately, her voice cracking. “Please, Alex. I need time to figure this out.”
Alex’s expression hardened, and he took a step back. “Time,” he repeated bitterly. “I’ve given you time, Emma. But I can’t wait forever. If you want me out of your life, just say the word.”
With that, he turned and walked toward the door, leaving Emma standing frozen in the middle of the room. She heard the door close behind him, the sound reverberating through the silence like a finality she wasn’t ready to face.
Emma sank onto the couch, her hands trembling as she buried her face in them. She felt raw, exposed, and utterly lost. Her mind was a whirlwind of memories, emotions, and doubts, all crashing into each other with relentless force.
The sound of the twins stirring in the next room broke through her haze, grounding her in the present. She wiped her eyes quickly, forcing herself to stand and check on them. As she leaned over their cribs, watching their peaceful faces, a pang of guilt pierced her chest. This wasn’t just about her feelings—it was about their future. They deserved a stable home, a united family. But what did that look like? Was it with Alex? With Thomas? Or on her own?
Unable to shake the overwhelming turmoil, Emma grabbed her coat and keys, deciding she needed to get out of the house. Her feet carried her to the hospital almost on instinct, seeking solace in the one place she knew she could find clarity—or at least a semblance of it.
When Emma entered Thomas’s hospital room, he was sitting up in bed, his face pale but alert. His expression brightened when he saw her, though it quickly shifted to concern as he noticed her tear-streaked face.
“Emma,” he said softly, his voice a soothing balm against her frayed nerves. “What’s wrong?”
She hesitated for a moment before stepping closer, sinking into the chair beside his bed. “Everything,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “Alex gave me an ultimatum. He wants me to choose—him or you.”
Thomas’s brow furrowed, his jaw tightening. “That’s not fair,” he said firmly. “He can’t force you into a decision like that.”
Emma let out a shaky laugh. “Fair? None of this is fair, Thomas. Not to Alex, not to you, not to the twins. I feel like I’m drowning, and no matter what I do, someone’s going to get hurt.”
Thomas reached out, taking her hand in his. His touch was warm, grounding her in a way that only he could. “Emma,” he said gently, “you don’t have to make this decision alone. I know how hard this is for you, and I hate that you’re going through it. But I need you to know something.”
She looked up at him, her heart aching at the tenderness in his eyes.
“I love you,” he said simply, his voice steady and unwavering. “I’ve loved you for a long time. And I believe we could have something amazing together, something real. But I don’t want you to feel pressured. I just need you to know how I feel.”
Emma’s breath caught in her throat, her emotions flooding her all at once. She didn’t know what to say, how to respond. Thomas’s confession was everything she had feared and hoped for, all rolled into one.
“I… I don’t know what to say,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I care about you, Thomas. So much. But everything is so complicated.”
Thomas nodded, his expression understanding but resolute. “I know. And I’m not asking for an answer right now. But I will say this—I don’t want to lose you, Emma. When I get out of here, I want us to start fresh. To leave all this chaos behind and build something together. If you’re willing.”
Emma’s heart pounded as his words sank in. The idea of starting over with Thomas, of leaving behind the pain and uncertainty, was tempting. But it also felt like a betrayal—not just to Alex, but to the life she had built with him.
“I don’t know if I can do that,” she said finally, her voice breaking. “I don’t know if I’m strong enough.”
“You are,” Thomas said firmly. “I’ve seen your strength, Emma. You can handle this, no matter what you decide.”
Emma nodded, though the weight of her indecision still pressed heavily on her. As she sat there, her hand still in Thomas’s, she felt a flicker of clarity. She didn’t have all the answers, but she knew one thing: she couldn’t keep running from her feelings. She needed to face them head-on, no matter how painful it might be.
But as she left the hospital, her mind still reeling, a single question lingered: Could she truly make a choice that would satisfy her heart, her family, and her future? Or was she destined to lose something—or someone—no matter what she chose?
