Love by the Contract

Chapter 92

Chapter 92

The air between Emma and Alex was heavy with unspoken tension. The twins were finally settled in their playroom after an eventful day, their giggles now replaced by soft coos and the occasional babble as they nodded off in their cribs. But Emma’s mind was far from calm. She couldn’t let go of the sinking feeling that Alex’s earlier actions had overstepped every boundary they had worked so hard to establish.

As Alex stepped into the living room, Emma stood waiting, her arms crossed and her expression taut. He seemed to know the storm was coming but still braced himself, his shoulders stiffening.

“Start talking,” Emma said, her voice low but sharp. “You owe me an explanation.”

Alex ran a hand through his hair, a gesture she recognized as both frustration and guilt. “I took them to a therapy session,” he admitted, his tone measured. “I wanted to explore family therapy—for all of us. I thought it could be a first step toward healing.”

Emma blinked, his words catching her off guard. She had expected something impulsive, maybe even careless, but therapy? It was thoughtful. Measured. And yet, the way he had gone about it gnawed at her.

“And you thought you could do that without telling me?” she snapped, her voice rising. “You thought it was okay to just take the twins somewhere without even asking if I was okay with it?”

“I didn’t think I needed permission,” Alex countered, his tone defensive. “They’re my children too, Emma. I have every right to make decisions for their well-being.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed, anger bubbling to the surface. “This isn’t about your rights, Alex. This is about trust. About communication. Do you have any idea how terrified I was when I found out you’d taken them without a word? What if something had happened? What if—”

“Nothing happened!” Alex interrupted, his voice loud enough to echo in the room. “I was trying to do something good for them. For us. But you’re so caught up in your control that you can’t see that.”

Emma recoiled, his words hitting a nerve. “Control? You think this is about control?” Her voice broke, emotion creeping into her tone. “This is about the fact that I’m trying to hold everything together, and you—” She paused, shaking her head. “You keep blindsiding me.”

Alex stepped closer, his expression softening slightly, though frustration still lingered in his eyes. “I wasn’t trying to blindside you. I was trying to fix things. For the twins, for our family. And for us.”

Emma’s heart twisted at his words. She wanted to believe him, to see the good in his intentions. But the hurt and frustration she felt wouldn’t dissipate so easily.

“Alex,” she began, her voice steadier now, “if you really wanted to fix things, you would’ve talked to me first. You would’ve included me in the decision. Instead, you made me feel like I don’t even have a say.”

“You do have a say,” Alex insisted, his tone softening further. “But every time I try to help, I feel like I’m walking on eggshells. Like no matter what I do, it’s never going to be enough for you.”

Emma’s chest tightened. His words held a painful truth, one she wasn’t ready to confront. But before she could respond, Alex pressed on.

“And maybe,” he added, his voice quiet but pointed, “it’s because you’re not sure you even want this anymore. Want us anymore.”

The room fell into a heavy silence. Emma’s heart thudded painfully in her chest as she stared at Alex, unsure of how to respond.

“What are you talking about?” she asked finally, her voice barely above a whisper.

Alex took a deep breath, his gaze steady but filled with an emotion she couldn’t quite place—hurt, anger, and something that looked like resignation. “I know about Thomas,” he said, his words like a punch to the gut. “I know how close you’ve gotten to him. I know how he feels about you. And I can’t help but wonder if… if you feel the same way.”

Emma froze, the blood draining from her face. Her mind raced, trying to piece together how Alex could know, but more than that, how to respond. The truth was complicated—so much more than a simple yes or no.

“I don’t know what you think you know,” she said carefully, her voice trembling, “but whatever it is, it doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been trying to make things work between us. For the twins. For our family.”

Alex laughed bitterly, the sound sharp and cutting. “For the twins,” he repeated. “Everything is always ‘for the twins.’ But what about you, Emma? What about what you actually want?”

Emma shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. “This isn’t about what I want. It’s about what’s best for them.”

“And what’s best for them is a mother who’s honest with herself,” Alex shot back, his voice rising again. “So be honest, Emma. Do you love him?”

The question hung in the air like a loaded gun. Emma felt her throat tighten, her chest constricting as her emotions swirled in a chaotic storm. She didn’t want to answer, didn’t want to admit the feelings she had buried so deeply.

“I—” She stopped herself, unable to form the words.

Alex’s expression hardened, though his eyes betrayed his vulnerability. “That’s what I thought,” he said quietly, stepping back as if her silence was confirmation enough.

“Alex, it’s not that simple,” Emma said, her voice breaking. “You don’t understand—”

“I understand perfectly,” Alex interrupted, his tone icy now. “I’ve been trying to fix things, to give us a chance. But you’re already halfway out the door, aren’t you? You just didn’t have the guts to tell me.”

“That’s not fair,” Emma shot back, anger flaring again. “I’ve been doing everything I can to keep this family together. I’ve sacrificed so much—”

“And maybe that’s the problem,” Alex said, his voice cutting. “You’ve sacrificed so much that there’s nothing left of you. You’re so busy trying to be perfect for everyone else that you’ve forgotten how to just be you.”

Emma stared at him, her heart breaking under the weight of his words. She wanted to scream, to argue, to defend herself. But deep down, she knew he was right.

“I don’t know what to say,” she finally admitted, her voice barely audible.

“Then don’t say anything,” Alex replied, his tone weary. “Just think about what you really want, Emma. And when you figure it out, let me know. Because I can’t keep doing this—fighting for something that might not even exist anymore.”

With that, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Emma standing alone, her emotions in shambles.

The night was long and sleepless. Emma sat by the twins’ cribs, watching them as they slept peacefully, oblivious to the chaos surrounding them. Her mind replayed Alex’s words over and over, each one cutting deeper than the last.

Did she love Thomas? The question gnawed at her, refusing to be ignored. She cared about him deeply—there was no denying that. But love? It felt too big, too final, to name what they had. And yet, her feelings for Alex were just as complicated. He had been her partner, the father of her children, the man she had once imagined spending her life with. Could they ever get back to that place? Or had they both changed too much?

By the time the first rays of sunlight crept through the window, Emma felt no closer to an answer. But one thing was clear: she couldn’t keep running from her feelings. She needed to confront them head-on, no matter how painful it might be.

As the morning light filled the house, Emma resolved to have a serious conversation with Alex. They couldn’t keep dancing around the truth, couldn’t keep hurting each other with half-measures and unspoken feelings. It was time to lay everything out on the table and face whatever came next.

But as she reached for her phone to call him, a sharp knock at the door startled her. She froze, her heart pounding in her chest as she walked to the door and opened it to find Alex standing there, his expression unreadable.

“We need to talk,” he said simply.

Emma nodded, stepping aside to let him in. “Yes. We do.”
