Chapter 94
Chapter 94
The house was quiet, the kind of quiet that carried weight, like the moments before a storm. Emma stood outside her front door, the key in her hand trembling slightly. She had spent hours wandering aimlessly after leaving the hospital, trying to untangle the knots of emotion that had taken hold of her. Now, as she stepped inside, the familiar hum of her home greeted her. But she wasn’t alone.
Alex stood in the living room, holding one of the twins, while the other played on a blanket spread out on the floor. He looked up as she entered, his expression soft yet serious.
“We need to talk,” he said gently, his voice steady but laced with something Emma couldn’t quite place—resolve, perhaps, or maybe resignation.
Emma nodded, closing the door behind her. She set her bag down and crossed the room, crouching to stroke the soft curls atop her son’s head. The simple touch grounded her, offering a fleeting moment of peace before she turned to face Alex.
He gestured for her to sit, settling the baby into the playpen before joining her on the couch. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them was thick with unsaid words, but it was Alex who broke the silence.
“I’ve been thinking a lot,” he began, his hands resting on his knees. “About us. About everything we’ve been through, and everything we’ve put each other through.”
Emma folded her hands in her lap, her gaze fixed on the twins as they babbled and played, blissfully unaware of the tension in the room. “I’ve been thinking about it too,” she said softly. “But I don’t know where to start.”
Alex sighed, leaning back against the couch. “I guess I’ll start, then. Emma, I know I’ve made mistakes. Big ones. I let my fear, my pride, and my own insecurities get in the way of what really mattered—our family. I thought I was protecting you by stepping back, but all I did was make things harder for both of us.”
Emma’s throat tightened, her chest aching at the raw honesty in his voice. “I made mistakes too,” she admitted. “I should have been more open with you, instead of shutting you out when things got hard. I thought I was protecting myself, but all I did was push you further away.”
Alex nodded, his eyes searching hers. “We both messed up, Emma. But we’ve also been through more than most people could handle, and we’re still standing. That has to count for something.”
Emma looked away, her gaze drifting back to the twins. “It does,” she said quietly. “But it’s not just about us anymore. It’s about them. They need stability, Alex. They need to see that their parents can work together, even if…”
Her voice trailed off, but Alex understood. “Even if we’re not together,” he finished for her.
The words hung in the air, heavy and unresolved. Alex leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I don’t want to pressure you, Emma. I know you’re still figuring things out, and I’m not asking you to make a decision tonight. But I need you to know where I stand.”
Emma’s heart pounded as she waited for him to continue.
“I still love you,” Alex said, his voice steady and sure. “I never stopped. And I want us to have another chance—not just for the twins, but for us. I know it won’t be easy, but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.”
Emma’s breath hitched, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. “Alex, I care about you too,” she began, her voice trembling. “But everything is so complicated. Thomas…”
Alex’s jaw tightened at the mention of Thomas, but he didn’t interrupt. He simply waited, his gaze steady.
“I don’t know how to untangle my feelings for him,” Emma admitted, her cheeks flushing with shame. “He’s been there for me in ways I didn’t expect, and I can’t pretend those feelings don’t exist. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about you, or that I don’t want to try to fix what we had.”
Alex closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. When he opened them, there was no anger, only quiet determination. “I understand,” he said. “And I’ll give you the space you need to figure it out. But I need you to know that I’m not giving up on us, Emma. Not unless you tell me there’s no hope.”
Emma’s chest ached at the sincerity in his voice. She wanted to give him the answer he was looking for, to provide clarity for both of them, but the truth was she didn’t have one.
Not yet.
As the conversation shifted to lighter topics—logistics for the twins, plans for the week—Emma felt a small weight lift. For the first time in weeks, she and Alex were talking like partners again, even if the future remained uncertain. But just as she was beginning to feel a sliver of hope, her phone buzzed on the coffee table.
She picked it up, her stomach sinking as she saw the message from Thomas’s number:
Discharge papers signed. Leaving town tomorrow. I just wanted you to know.
Emma stared at the screen, her heart plummeting. She barely registered Alex’s concerned expression as he asked, “What’s wrong?”
“It’s Thomas,” she said, her voice hollow. “He’s leaving.”
Alex’s expression shifted, a mixture of relief and surprise. “He’s leaving? For good?”
Emma nodded, her mind racing. “I think so. He didn’t say much, just that he’s being discharged and leaving tomorrow.”
Alex hesitated, his jaw tightening slightly before he spoke. “Maybe it’s for the best. It’ll give you the space you need to think.”
But Emma wasn’t sure she wanted that space. The thought of Thomas leaving—of never seeing him again—sent a wave of panic through her. She stood abruptly, her phone still clutched in her hand.
“I need to talk to him,” she said, already heading for the door.
Alex rose to his feet, his brow furrowing. “Emma, are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice shaking. “But I have to try. I can’t let him leave without saying goodbye.”
Alex watched her for a long moment before nodding. “Go,” he said quietly. “But Emma… just be honest with yourself. And with him.”
Emma drove to the hospital in a daze, her mind racing with questions and emotions she couldn’t contain. By the time she reached Thomas’s room, her hands were trembling, and her heart felt like it might burst from her chest.
Thomas looked up as she entered, surprise flickering across his face. “Emma,” he said, sitting up straighter. “I didn’t expect to see you tonight.”
She closed the door behind her, taking a deep breath before crossing the room. “I got your message,” she said, her voice trembling. “You’re leaving?”
Thomas nodded, his expression guarded. “I think it’s time. I need a fresh start, somewhere I can figure things out without all this… noise.”
Emma’s chest tightened. “So that’s it? You’re just going to leave without saying goodbye?”
“I didn’t want to make things harder for you,” Thomas said softly. “You’ve got enough on your plate without me adding to it.”
Emma sank into the chair beside his bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “You’re not just ‘adding to it,’ Thomas. You’re part of my life. And I don’t want you to go.”
Thomas’s eyes softened, a flicker of hope shining through his guarded expression. “Emma, you know how I feel about you. But I can’t keep waiting around, hoping you’ll choose me. I need to move on, for my own sanity.”
Tears welled in Emma’s eyes as she reached for his hand. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’ve been so lost, trying to figure out what’s right for me, for the twins… for everyone. But the thought of you leaving—”
Her voice broke, and Thomas squeezed her hand gently. “I don’t want to leave,” he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. “But I can’t stay if it means watching you build a life with someone else.”
They sat in silence for a long moment, the weight of their emotions filling the room. Finally, Thomas spoke again, his voice quiet but firm. “If you want me to stay, Emma, just say the word. But if you can’t, I need you to let me go.”
Emma’s heart felt like it was being torn in two. She didn’t know if she could give him the answer he deserved, but she knew she couldn’t let him leave without telling him how much he meant to her.
“I care about you, Thomas,” she said, her voice trembling. “More than I ever thought possible. But I don’t know if I can give you what you’re asking for. Not yet.”
Thomas nodded slowly, his eyes searching hers. “Then I guess this is goodbye.”
