Love by the Contract

Chapter 82

Chapter 82

The morning sun filtered through Emma’s living room window, bathing everything in a soft golden hue. But the warmth did little to ease the cold knot of unease tightening in her chest. The cryptic email she had received still lingered in her thoughts, and the attached file, with its damning evidence against Thomas, felt like a ticking time bomb.

Emma sipped her coffee, the bitter taste doing little to calm her nerves. She stared at her laptop screen, the documents open before her once more. Names of international pharmaceutical companies jumped out at her, along with dates, financial records, and details of clinical trials. Trials that, according to the notes, had resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities abroad. It was all too much to ignore, yet not quite enough to fully understand.

She closed her eyes and let out a shaky breath. If she was going to get to the bottom of this, she needed help—professional help.

Later that morning, Emma found herself seated in a quiet office, the muted hum of the city outside barely audible through the thick windows. Across from her sat Rebecca Lane, a private investigator recommended by a trusted friend. Rebecca’s sharp eyes and calm demeanor exuded competence, which was exactly what Emma needed right now.

“Thank you for meeting with me on such short notice,” Emma began, her voice laced with urgency. “I need your help to investigate someone... someone I’ve been working closely with.”

Rebecca nodded, pulling out a notepad. “Tell me everything you know so far.”

Emma hesitated, her hands wringing in her lap. “His name is Thomas Carter. He’s been instrumental in helping me build my foundation. But recently, I received an email suggesting that his past isn’t as clean as he’s led me to believe.”

She handed over a printed copy of the email and a USB drive containing the files she had reviewed. “There’s information here about his involvement in pharmaceutical trials overseas. Trials that allegedly resulted in deaths.”

Rebecca’s expression remained neutral as she examined the materials. “I’ll look into this. But you should know, digging into someone’s past—especially someone you’re close to—can reveal things you might not be prepared to face.”

Emma’s stomach churned, but she nodded. “I need to know the truth. Whatever it takes.”

The following days were a blur of anxiety and second-guessing. Emma threw herself into work, hoping to distract herself from the growing tension in her life. But the weight of suspicion pressed down on her, refusing to be ignored. Every time Thomas called or stopped by, she felt a pang of guilt for investigating him behind his back. Yet she couldn’t shake the fear that he was hiding something dangerous.

Her phone buzzed late one afternoon, breaking her concentration. It was Rebecca.

“I’ve found something,” the investigator said, her tone grave. “We need to meet.”

Rebecca’s office was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of coffee and old books. She motioned for Emma to sit, her expression serious.

“What I’m about to share with you isn’t easy to hear,” Rebecca began, sliding a folder across the desk. “Thomas Carter was involved in a series of pharmaceutical trials conducted in Southeast Asia about six years ago. Officially, his role was listed as ‘consultant,’ but financial records show he was deeply tied to the companies funding the trials.”

Emma’s heart sank as she opened the folder. Inside were documents detailing the trials, which had been conducted under the guise of offering free medical treatments to impoverished communities. The reality was far darker—untested drugs had been administered without proper consent, leading to severe complications and, in some cases, death.

Rebecca continued, “While Thomas didn’t directly oversee the trials, his name appears on contracts and financial transactions linked to these operations. He may not have orchestrated the events, but he was certainly complicit.”

Emma felt her hands trembling as she closed the folder. “Why didn’t he tell me about this?” she whispered. “He’s been so supportive, so... involved. How could he hide something like this?”

Rebecca leaned back in her chair, her gaze sympathetic. “Sometimes, people justify their actions as a means to an end. He may have believed he was doing something good, or perhaps he thought it wouldn’t come to light. The question is, what are you going to do with this information?”

Emma didn’t have an answer.

That evening, Emma sat alone in her apartment, the folder from Rebecca weighing heavily on her desk. The twins were asleep, their soft breaths audible through the baby monitor. The sound was a small comfort, but it wasn’t enough to quiet her racing thoughts.

When the knock came at her door, she froze. She wasn’t expecting anyone.

Opening the door, she found Thomas standing there, his expression troubled. “Hey,” he said, his voice unusually subdued. “Can we talk?”

Emma hesitated, her pulse quickening. “Of course. Come in.”

Thomas stepped inside, glancing around as if sensing the tension in the air. “You’ve been distant lately,” he began, his tone careful. “Is everything okay?”

Emma swallowed hard, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. “Thomas, I need to ask you something. And I need you to be honest with me.”

His brow furrowed. “What’s going on?”

She walked to her desk, picking up the folder and holding it out to him. “I’ve been looking into your past. I hired someone to investigate. And this... this is what I found.”

Thomas’s face went pale as he took the folder, his hands gripping it tightly. He flipped through the pages, his jaw tightening with each new piece of evidence. When he finally looked up, his eyes were filled with a mixture of anger and hurt.

“You went behind my back,” he said, his voice low and trembling.

“I had to,” Emma shot back, her voice rising. “You didn’t tell me any of this, Thomas. You didn’t give me a choice. How could I trust you when you kept something like this from me?”

Thomas set the folder down, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t tell you because it’s not who I am anymore. Yes, I was involved in those trials, but I didn’t know what they were doing at the time. By the time I realized the truth, it was too late. I walked away from that world, Emma. I’ve spent years trying to make amends.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears. “And you didn’t think I deserved to know? After everything we’ve been through, after everything we’ve built together?”

“I was afraid,” Thomas admitted, his voice breaking. “Afraid that if you knew, you’d see me differently. That you’d push me away.”

Emma shook her head, her heart aching. “You should have trusted me, Thomas. You should have given me the chance to understand.”

They stood in silence for a long moment, the weight of the conversation pressing down on them. Finally, Thomas stepped closer, his voice soft but firm. “I know I’ve made mistakes, Emma. But everything I’ve done since then has been for you, for the foundation, for the twins. I need you to believe that.”

Emma looked at him, her emotions a whirlwind. “I don’t know if I can,” she said quietly.

Thomas’s face fell, but he nodded, stepping back. “I’ll give you time. But I’m not giving up on us, Emma. Not yet.”

After Thomas left, Emma sat in the quiet of her living room, her thoughts racing. The trust they had built was shattered, replaced by a lingering doubt she couldn’t ignore. The man she thought she knew was more complicated, more flawed, than she had realized.
