Love by the Contract

Chapter 83

Chapter 83

The morning dawned with a muted gray sky, the kind that seemed to reflect Emma’s mood perfectly. She sat at her kitchen table, a cup of untouched coffee cooling in her hands, her gaze unfocused. The confrontation with Thomas the night before had left her raw, her emotions a swirling mix of betrayal, guilt, and uncertainty. The folder Rebecca had given her lay nearby, its contents now burned into her mind.

The knock at the door startled her. For a moment, she debated ignoring it, but the persistent rhythm pulled her to her feet. She opened the door to find Thomas standing there, his expression weary but resolute. In his hand, he held a large envelope.

“Emma,” he began, his voice low and cautious. “I need to talk to you.”

She hesitated, the memory of their heated exchange still fresh, but something in his eyes—an urgency she hadn’t seen before—compelled her to step aside. “Come in.”

Thomas entered, glancing briefly at the folder on the table before setting his envelope down beside it. “I know I’ve given you every reason not to trust me,” he said, his tone steady but tinged with emotion. “But I want to make things right. I brought proof.”

Emma folded her arms, a protective barrier against the vulnerability she felt creeping in. “Proof of what, Thomas? That you’re not the person I thought you were?”

He winced but didn’t back down. “Proof that I didn’t know what was happening in those trials until it was too late—and that I did everything I could to expose the truth once I found out.”

Emma’s brow furrowed as Thomas opened the envelope and pulled out a stack of documents. He handed them to her, his hands shaking slightly. “These are the emails I sent to the oversight committee, the whistleblower reports I filed. And this—” he gestured to a letter at the top of the pile “—is from the legal team that cleared me of any wrongdoing after the investigation. I’ve spent years living with the guilt of being part of something so destructive, even unknowingly. But I didn’t run away from it, Emma. I fought to make it right.”

She stared at the papers, her fingers trembling as she flipped through them. The emails were dated and detailed, showing his growing alarm as he uncovered the truth. The whistleblower report outlined his efforts to stop the trials and hold those responsible accountable. The legal letter confirmed that he had cooperated fully with investigators and had been exonerated.

“Why didn’t you show me this before?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Thomas sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Because I was scared. Scared of losing you, of losing everything we’ve built together. I thought... if I could bury this part of my past, it wouldn’t have to touch you.”

Emma closed her eyes, the weight of his words settling over her. “But it did touch me, Thomas. When you hid this from me, you made it impossible for me to trust you completely. And trust is everything.”

“I know,” he said quietly. “And I’ll spend as long as it takes earning it back. But I need you to see that I’ve never stopped trying to do the right thing. For you. For the twins. For this foundation.”

His vulnerability was palpable, and for the first time since their fallout, Emma felt a glimmer of the man she had come to rely on. She took a deep breath, her voice steady but soft. “I need time to process this. But thank you for showing me.”

Thomas nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. “Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.”

The next few days passed in a blur of introspection for Emma. She reviewed the documents Thomas had given her repeatedly, each read-through chipping away at the walls she had built around her heart. He wasn’t perfect—far from it—but his actions showed a man who had fought to right his wrongs, even when it cost him dearly.

On a crisp evening, she called him. “Can you come over?” she asked, her voice calm but firm.

Thomas arrived within the hour, his expression a mixture of apprehension and hope. Emma met him at the door, her face unreadable.

“Come in,” she said, leading him to the living room. They sat across from each other, the silence thick between them.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about what you showed me,” Emma began, her tone measured. “And I see now that you’ve tried to make amends for your past. That means something to me.”

Thomas’s shoulders relaxed slightly, though his posture remained tentative. “Thank you, Emma. I can’t tell you how much that means.”

“But,” she continued, holding up a hand, “trust isn’t rebuilt overnight. If we’re going to move forward, we need to be honest with each other—completely honest.”

“I agree,” Thomas said without hesitation. “No more secrets. You have my word.”

She nodded, a small smile breaking through her otherwise serious demeanor. “Good. Because I can’t do this alone, Thomas. The foundation, the twins... I need people I can rely on.”

“You can rely on me,” he said softly, reaching out to take her hand. “Always.”

For the first time in weeks, Emma felt a sense of peace settle over her. Their bond wasn’t perfect, but it was stronger for having weathered the storm.

That peace was shattered the next morning when Emma received an urgent call from her foundation’s legal advisor.

“Emma,” the advisor said, her voice tense. “We’ve just been notified that the foundation is under review by the regulatory board. There’s been a formal complaint filed against us.”

Emma’s stomach dropped. “A complaint? About what?”

“They’re questioning our financial practices, alleging that we’ve mishandled donor funds and violated compliance standards. It’s serious, Emma. If they find any irregularities, it could shut us down.”

Emma gripped the edge of her desk, her mind racing. “Who filed the complaint?”

“The source is anonymous,” the advisor replied. “But given everything you’ve been dealing with, I think we both know who’s behind this.”

Victor Harlow. His name hung in the air like a storm cloud, his shadow looming larger than ever.

“Thank you for letting me know,” Emma said, her voice steely. “I’ll handle this.”

Emma called Thomas and Alex, both of whom arrived within the hour. She briefed them on the situation, her resolve hardening as she spoke.

“This is clearly another attempt by Harlow to sabotage us,” she said. “But we’re not going to let him win. We’ve worked too hard to build this foundation, and I won’t let it be destroyed.”

“We’re with you,” Alex said, his tone firm. “Whatever you need.”

“Absolutely,” Thomas added. “We’ll fight this together.”

The three of them spent the day poring over the foundation’s records, ensuring every transaction, every donor agreement, was in perfect order. Emma reached out to key supporters and allies, rallying them to her side. The foundation had always been a labor of love, but now it felt like a battle for survival.

As night fell, Emma sat in her office, exhaustion tugging at her edges. Thomas knocked softly on the door before stepping inside.

“You’ve been at this all day,” he said, concern etched on his face. “You need to rest.”

“I can’t,” she said, shaking her head. “Not until I know we’re prepared for whatever they throw at us.”

Thomas crouched beside her chair, his hand resting lightly on her arm. “You’re not alone in this, Emma. Let us help you carry the load.”

His words, so simple yet so profound, brought tears to her eyes. She nodded, allowing herself a moment of vulnerability. “Thank you, Thomas. For everything.”

The next day, the regulatory board’s inquiry began. Emma and her team met with the investigators, presenting their meticulously organized records and addressing every question with calm confidence. It was grueling, but Emma’s unwavering resolve never faltered.

As the meeting wrapped up, the lead investigator glanced at her with a faint smile. “I have to say, Ms. Barrett, your foundation’s transparency is impressive. We’ll review everything, but I don’t anticipate any major issues.”

Emma exhaled, relief washing over her. “Thank you. That means a lot.”

But just as she began to feel a glimmer of hope, her phone buzzed with a text message. It was from an unknown number, and the words sent a chill down her spine.

You’re not out of the woods yet. Expect more surprises.
