Chapter 81
Chapter 81
The soft hum of the hospital’s fluorescent lights provided a steady backdrop as Emma packed her belongings. A nurse had just informed her that she was being discharged, her vitals stable enough to continue recovery at home. The idea of leaving the hospital was a relief, but the challenges awaiting her beyond these sterile walls still loomed large.
As she zipped up her overnight bag, the door creaked open, and Alex stepped inside. He held a small box wrapped in blue paper—a parting gift, perhaps. His face was calm, yet his eyes held a hint of hesitation, as if he wasn’t sure how his presence would be received.
“Heading home?” he asked gently, motioning toward the packed bag.
Emma nodded, her movements deliberate. “Yeah. The doctor says I need to take it easy for a while, though.”
Alex leaned against the doorframe, his posture relaxed but his expression serious. “Good. You need rest, Emma. For your sake and the twins’.”
She smiled faintly, appreciating his concern even as a familiar tension settled between them. “What’s that?” she asked, nodding toward the box.
Alex held it out, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Just something for the twins. A couple of storybooks I found. Figured they’d enjoy them.”
Emma took the box, her fingers brushing his for a moment. “Thank you, Alex. That’s thoughtful.”
An awkward silence stretched between them before Alex finally cleared his throat. “I wanted to talk to you about something,” he began, his voice steady but low.
Emma set the box on the table and turned to face him fully. “What is it?”
He took a deep breath, his hands slipping into his pockets. “I’ve decided to withdraw the custody claim.”
Her eyes widened in surprise. “You... you’re serious?”
Alex nodded. “I’ve been thinking a lot about everything—what this battle is doing to you, to us, and to the twins. I don’t want to put you through more stress, Emma. It’s not fair to anyone, especially them.”
Emma stared at him, emotions swirling in her chest. Relief, gratitude, and a touch of skepticism all mingled together. “Why now?” she asked softly. “What changed?”
Alex met her gaze, his voice steady. “Seeing you in that hospital bed was a wake-up call. I realized that fighting over custody isn’t what’s best for the twins. What they need is stability and two parents who can work together. So I’m stepping back—not from their lives, but from the fight.”
Tears pricked at the corners of Emma’s eyes. She hadn’t realized just how much the custody battle had been weighing on her until that weight began to lift. “Alex... Thank you. I know that wasn’t an easy decision.”
He shrugged, a wry smile playing on his lips. “It’s the right one. And for what it’s worth, I still want to be involved. Co-parenting, sharing responsibilities—I’m all in. But on your terms.”
Emma nodded, her throat tightening. “That means a lot, Alex. More than you know.”
Later that afternoon, Emma returned home to the warm embrace of her apartment. The twins were napping peacefully in their cribs, their tiny chests rising and falling in perfect rhythm. Emma stood by the doorway, watching them with a sense of awe and gratitude. These two little lives were her world, her purpose, and her strength.
Alex’s decision had brought her some much-needed clarity, but it also left her with a new set of challenges. Co-parenting wasn’t going to be easy, but it was a path she was willing to navigate if it meant giving her children the stability they deserved.
As she settled onto the couch with a cup of tea, her phone buzzed on the table. She picked it up, frowning at the sight of an unfamiliar email address in her inbox. The subject line read: Urgent: Regarding Thomas Carter’s Past.
Curiosity and unease prickled at her as she opened the email. The message was brief but chilling.
Ms. Barrett,
You’ve been misled about Thomas Carter. His past is far more dangerous than you realize. If you value the integrity of your foundation and your family’s safety, you’ll distance yourself from him immediately. There are details you need to know before it’s too late.
The email ended with an attached file labeled Carter_Records and a cryptic signature: A Concerned Party.
Emma’s heart pounded as she stared at the screen. The accusations against Thomas had already shaken her trust, but this... this was something else entirely. Her finger hovered over the attachment, hesitation clawing at her.
Should she open it? Did she even want to know what it contained? Or was this just another attempt to undermine her work and sow discord in her life?
A knock at the door startled her, breaking her train of thought. She quickly closed the email and set the phone aside, her pulse racing as she walked to the door. When she opened it, Thomas stood on the other side, his expression hopeful yet wary.
“Hey,” he said, offering a small smile. “I wanted to check in. See how you’re settling back in.”
Emma forced a smile, her thoughts still consumed by the email. “I’m fine. Just trying to get back into the swing of things.”
Thomas stepped inside, his presence filling the room with a comforting warmth she couldn’t deny. “If there’s anything you need, you know I’m here, right?”
She nodded, her gaze drifting to the phone on the table. “Thomas... there’s something I need to ask you.”
He followed her gaze, his expression shifting to one of concern. “What is it?”
Emma hesitated, her mind racing. Should she confront him directly? Show him the email? Or was it better to gather more information before making any accusations?
Instead, she chose her words carefully. “I need to know that I can trust you. Completely. No more secrets, no more half-truths.”
Thomas’s brow furrowed, his voice steady. “You can trust me, Emma. I know I’ve made mistakes, but everything I’ve done has been for you, for the foundation. I’m on your side.”
She wanted to believe him, but the weight of the email lingered in the back of her mind. For now, she decided to keep it to herself, at least until she had a chance to review the file. “Okay,” she said finally, her voice soft. “I’m holding you to that.”
That night, after Thomas had left and the twins were fast asleep, Emma sat alone at her desk. The room was dimly lit, the only sound the faint hum of the baby monitor. Her laptop screen glowed in front of her, the unopened file still sitting in her inbox.
Taking a deep breath, she clicked on the attachment. A series of documents and photographs filled the screen, each one more damning than the last. Financial records, legal filings, and even what appeared to be surveillance photos of Thomas meeting with figures Emma didn’t recognize.
Her stomach churned as she scrolled through the evidence. The accusations against Thomas weren’t just about his past—they suggested an ongoing involvement with individuals who could jeopardize everything she had worked for. The foundation, her reputation, even her family’s safety—all of it was at risk.
By the time she finished reading, her hands were trembling. The man she had trusted, the man who had stood by her through some of her darkest moments, was now the source of a new and terrifying uncertainty.
Emma leaned back in her chair, her mind racing. What was she supposed to do now? Confront Thomas with the evidence? Go to the authorities? Or was there another explanation, one she hadn’t considered?
