Chapter 29
Chapter 29
"Escape"
The heart stopped beating. Lina clung to the wall with her fingers to avoid falling and crying out in despair. She barely restrained herself from running into the corridor and screaming Sam's name.
Outside the room, there was commotion and chaos; soldiers were shouting something, running, and gunfire continued...
The girl bit her lip until it bled and stared at the floor, feeling her soul relentlessly plummeting into the abyss. "I've lost him," a drumbeat echoed in her head. "It's my fault," her conscience reproached. "I'm the cause of all the troubles."
– It's all right, little one, – a whisper sounded beside her ear.
At first, Lina couldn't believe it herself. Could it be hallucinations from grief? But no. After a few seconds, warm hands embraced her waist and turned her towards him.
– It's all okay, – Sam said. – There's a secret passage from our room to this one. They didn't even touch me.
The alive and healthy man stood next to her. His face, although lacking a smile, bore no particular anxiety either. The girl leaned against him, allowing her tears to flow freely.
– Quiet now, little one, – he comforted her, darkly. – Everything will be fine. Everything will be fine.
After a few seconds, Samael took her face in his hands and looking straight into her eyes said:
– Right now, we need to get to the roof. A helicopter will come for us. I can't use my powers since there's a shield on the soldiers. So we will have to go through. There is only one staircase here, and it's filled with these fools. But we can do it. Do you trust me?
– Yes, – she nodded.
– Great, then here's what we'll do.
Sam briefly and clearly outlined the entire plan. It was risky, but there was no other way. Either they took the risk and had a chance to escape, or they stayed put and were guaranteed to be captured by the soldiers.
The dark one delved into the boxes under the clothing shelves and pulled out a toy grenade. He wasn't sure the men would fall for such a provocation. However, the element of surprise should play to their advantage.
– But how did it get here? – Lina asked, surprised.
– This is the costume department of the most expensive erotic show in New York, dear. They have everything and even more. Besides, just a month ago, they presented a new production where all these gadgets were used. Bomb replicas, automatic rifles, pistols, mini-rockets... Well, are you ready?
– Absolutely.
Samael took the girl by the hand and, abruptly opening the door, yelled:
– JUST MOVE AND THIS LITTLE FRIEND WILL BLOW YOU TO PIECES!!!
The man displayed the hand grenade to everyone, and an instant silence fell in the corridor. That's what military training means. They obviously had gone through preparations for similar situations, hence they froze, closely observing every movement of Sam.
– Put the grenade on the floor, and we will do nothing to you, – the oldest among them spoke diplomatically.
A gray-haired commander, sturdy as an old oak tree, with a giant scar across half his face. His eyes were completely black and extremely hostile. Such a person is hard to forget or overlook in a crowd.
– You won’t be dictating the terms right now! – the dark one roared. – We will slowly walk down the corridor and go to the stairs. If anyone moves, this grenade will explode. And believe me, only you will suffer because, as you well know, Lina and I are immortal.
The commander said nothing in response, only clenched his displeased lips. Samael walked slowly forward, firmly holding her with one hand and the toy grenade with the other.
As they passed by the motionless soldiers, Lina felt the tension and fear radiating from them. Many had sweat on their brows, and their eyes revealed thoughts: I didn't get to say goodbye to my mother, my wife, and my children; I haven't done so much yet; will I really perish so senselessly, never having fulfilled my dreams? It’s quite possible they will re-evaluate their personal values after what they’ve endured...
Meanwhile, they had already covered half the distance.
"Is it really so simple?" – a thought crossed the girl's mind just as they were literally two steps away from the staircase. The commander, standing right there, shot a sharp glance at the grenade. An understanding and mockery flickered in his eyes, then he made some sound that reSambled a whistle, and real chaos began.
The soldiers realized the grenade wasn't real. Sam reacted instantly and dashed forward. Everything happening around turned into utter chaos. Screams, shouts, more gunfire. Thoughts in Lina's head tangled. Her lungs burned with fire, they were running up the stairs so fast. As soon as they reached the roof, Sam immediately slammed the iron door shut and propped it with boxes nearby.
There was no helicopter. They had walked into a trap.
– What do we do? – the girl exclaimed in fright.
Being at the top of a high-rise building with a squad of armed soldiers just a few meters away was incredibly terrifying. All around were gray clouds, morning fog, and a piercing wind that seemed eager to throw them down.
The dark one glanced at the watch on his wrist.
– Nine minutes. The helicopter will arrive in nine minutes.
– But in that time, they will blow these doors down! – Lina shrieked.
Now that they had decided to be together, returning to the community was the worst possible outcome.
– Everything will be fine, – the man growled and locked his fingers together.
In just a few seconds, his eyes turned black, and the whites filled with blood. A dark energy began to seep from his body and crawled into the gap of the door. An icy wind blew, everything around grew dark, and an incomprehensible whisper was heard:
– Mine... mine... mine... mine... Blood... death... blood... death...
Lina felt out of place. The whisper surrounded her, making her blood run cold. Samael showed no emotion; only his lips moved slightly as if he were telling someone something.
A moment later, horrified screams sounded from the other side of the door, followed by some unnatural demonic laughter.
The girl, unable to bear the fear, tried to grab Sam's hand, but a powerful dark wave threw her aside.
Lina slammed her back against a piece of rebar. It hurt like hell, but she wasn't scared by that. The whisper that had seemed to be just a few meters away now crawled into her ears:
– Now he is ours... ours... ours... You monster... Abomination... Monster... Gray worthless piece unworthy of a master... Worthless... Worthless... Get out of here... get out...
