Chapter 99: Asena
Chapter 99: Asena
"Really? I thought they would go around, pretending to be people, and infiltrating into our social group. After all, their signature ability would be best use for that." Carter said.
"You are spot on, Master Blackburn. However, this ’territory’ term can be quite abstract. You see. Sometimes, the Skinwalker may deem a location already inhabited by us to be their territory. And instead of attacking us outright, it would kill someone within our social group, replace them..."
"And then pick us out one by one." Carter finished Oliphim’s sentence for him.
Oliphim nodded grimly, "Exactly, Master Blackburn."
"That is a difficult bastard to deal with. But I think we won’t have much problem dealing with it."
Carter boarded the aircraft with the Invokers, and the Priests.
The leaders would like to strike into the Gold Stream at Manaca directly to end the war for good. But Carter decided otherwise. He told them that he needed to save the people of the East Continent so instead of striking directly at the Gold Stream. The group would be attacking from the outside in, removing Terrors in each region before entering the Gold Stream.
Carter, of course, didn’t do this because of the kindness in his heart. He just wanted to farm even more Skin Shards and Prime Coins.
The aircraft left the military based and headed toward the first region, Asena. The Asena was a coastal region. Most of the people here had been killed by the Terrors, leaving only a small portion of the population alive.
Carter stood on the cargo compartment and looked down to the vacant land below.
He sighed deeply, "These monsters deserve to die."
Neros approached him and put a hand on his shoulder. "We’re here to save them, Zen. As you have vowed."
Piper was on the side and put another hand on him. "We will kill every single one of them, Zen."
"Protect the innocent. Strike down evil. Vanquish the deceptor." Carter mumbled the fake vow he had created for Zeneros Blackburn.
The Invokers grabbed their brush and raised their hands. They shouted the vow like it was some kind of chant.
"Protect the innocent! Strike down evil! Vanquish the deceptor!"
The Priests looked around. Their religious teachings never taught something as ruthless as this. But for the first time, they thought that maybe it was a better guidance.
It was simple. It was direct. And it was for the greater good.
The Priests looked over to Oliphim, the last leader of the Priests that hadn’t run away. He nodded.
The Priests raised their hand as well and repeated the same chant.
Carter smiled. It wasn’t him that smiled. It was Zeneros Blackburn. The Acting and Performance Skill were taking their spotlight. They reached Elite Level after he got the Elite Human Skill. Their powers were raised once more.
They changed and their influence toward reality was even more noticeable. The Priests that once deemed him as heretic didn’t even question his integrity anymore. It was as if Carter had truly become an honorable fool with a vow he couldn’t reject.
Carter raised his hands and leaned his back toward the open cargo door of the aircraft.
"I am glad that there are still good people in the world. I’ll see you down there."
Carter left the aircraft once again the same way he had done. The white swordsman shot straight through the air and into the city full of Terrors. He unsheathed the Prisoner in midair.
"Prisoner Unbound!"
Black feathers shot out from Carter. The Raven Armor wrapped around him. The Terrors roared as they flooded to him like ants.
The previous Eldritch Knight wouldn’t be able to kill all of these Terrors. His limitation was only 99 seconds. Even without an Elite threat, what he could do was limited.
But that was no longer the case. Because he had Elite Adrenaline and Elite Evaporative Decompression.
"Adrenaline!" A red aura wrapped around the white swordsman. All of his aspects were enhanced once.
It was incomparable to the quadruple stack of Elixirs, Terror Corruption, Adrenaline, and the Monster Beneath. But still, it helped the Eldritch Knight reached a level he could never dream of alone.
The Terrors couldn’t even see him. They could only feel a gust of wind before their heads were no longer on their bodies.
The white swordsman dashed around in the city, leaving only streaks of red as his afterimage.
The Invokers and the Priests arrived. They widened their eyes as they saw what Carter was doing.
Oliphim’s lips trembled to form words. "It is magnificent."
The man had to put a hand on his heart to ask himself. How could he compare himself with someone like Zeneros Blackburn. He couldn’t.
"Alright! Watching Zen fight is always a wonderful sight. But we have work to do, people! Leave the Terrors to him. We need to find any survivors and escort them to safety. We’ll split out in a group of five. Three Invokers and two Priests for each team." Neros said. "Any objection?"
Everyone nodded. No one refused anything.
Carter noticed another Peak Terror in front of him. He sliced right through it without even stopping. Peak Terror couldn’t even survive even for one second in front of him now.
He noticed a human girl was being chased by a few Terror Climbers.
"Mommy! Daddy! Help me!" The girl was full of tears. Death was knocking on her door.
Not anymore. A red streak went through the Terrors. They were dissected into parts on the ground. A white robe blocked the little girl from seeing the grotesque scene.
The girl removed her hands and looked up. A knight in white with a calming smile. He reached his hand out to pat her head.
"Are you alright?"
The girl nodded.
"Come. I get you to safety."
There was a certain halo behind Carter’s head. The girl didn’t know what that was. It was almost like he was shimmering in justice and kindness.
She grabbed his hand.
"Hang tight."
Carter pulled her up and dashed away. He used a manageable speed to not cause any discomfort to the child.
The white swordsman dropped the child at where the Invokers and Priests were.
"Take care of her for me." Carter said.
"On it, Zen. Keep going!" Neros said.
Carter nodded. He disappeared in a flash. The Invokers couldn’t even track his movement now.
"So fast..." Someone commented.
