Chapter 204: The Demon That Bowed!
Chapter 204: The Demon That Bowed!
Seraphina stood frozen outside the carriage, her smile slowly stiffening as Audrey’s words replayed in her head.
’Beautiful.’
That was the word Audrey had used.
Not something like... so useful, disposable or pathetic.
Beautiful?
Seraphina’s fingers curled into her cloak. Something about the way Audrey had said it made her skin crawl. She has no idea why she purposely asked for Rin to be brought to her estate. She doesn’t care, as long as Rin is going to die. But, would she kill someone she’s calling ’beautiful’?
She stepped forward abruptly, placing herself between Audrey and the carriage. With a sharp movement, she slammed the door shut, blocking Audrey’s view of Rin completely.
"When?" Seraphina asked coldly. "And how are you killing him?"
Audrey blinked, then her lips slowly curled into a calm and confident smile. The kind that made people uneasy.
"Relax," Audrey said. "It’s easy. I have one thousand and one ways to kill him but it won’t be easy."
"Of course, it won’t be. He has a contract with a demon. Or so I heard. So he’s strong. I hope the demon your sister is contracted with is more powerful than his demon."
"Yeah. Yeah. It is. So worry not and just let me do it."
She lifted her hand slightly and snapped her fingers.
One of the guards immediately stepped forward, bowing his head. Audrey leaned closer and spoke quietly.
"Carry him through the back entrance. Take him to my room. Make sure my sister doesn’t see him."
The guard nodded without hesitation. "Yes, my lady."
The carriage door opened again. Rin was carefully lifted, his body limp, his breathing shallow and steady. Seraphina watched closely, her eyes sharp, searching for any sign of deception. But Rin did not stir.
Audrey turned back to Seraphina, her smile widening.
"Everything will go your way now," she said lightly. "You don’t have to worry anymore. All you need to do is wait for the good news. Or... Bad news. It depends on who’s receiving it."
Seraphina studied her face for a long moment.
"Make sure he stays dead," she said at last.
Audrey nodded once. "Of course."
Satisfied... for now... Seraphina turned and climbed back into her carriage. Audrey stood outside, lifting her hand in a friendly wave.
She kept waving.
And waving.
Until the carriage disappeared into the darkness.
The moment it vanished, Audrey’s smile twisted into something darker.
She turned around slowly and she saw Jane, standing a few steps away, watching her with tired eyes.
"...Why was Lady Seraphina here?" Jane asked quietly.
Audrey didn’t hesitate.
She stepped forward and wrapped her arms tightly around her sister, burying her face against Jane’s shoulder.
"I don’t know," Audrey said softly. "She said she was worried about us after Father’s death."
Jane sighed and patted Audrey’s hair gently.
"It’s just the two of us now," Jane said. "Father is gone. The house... everything... It’s on us."
Audrey nodded against her shoulder, pretending to sniffle. She pulled back and wiped at her eyes like she was holding back tears.
"I know," she said softly. "I’m glad I still have you, Jane."
Jane smiled faintly. "I’ll take care of the burial arrangements. And I’ll send letters to the other nobles."
Audrey reached out and held Jane’s hands firmly.
"You’re in charge now," she said seriously. "You’re the head of this house. Keep your head up."
Jane laughed quietly. "You make it sound so heavy."
She leaned forward slightly, intending to kiss Audrey’s cheek. But Audrey turned her head and caught Jane’s lips instead. Jane froze for half a second, then laughed it off softly, embarrassed.
"...You," she said, shaking her head.
Audrey smiled sweetly and waved her off. "Go on. I’ll head to my room to rest."
Jane nodded and walked away.
The moment she was gone, Audrey’s smile vanished. She turned on her heel and rushed down the hallway. She slammed her bedroom door shut and locked it.
The room was dim, lit only by faint moonlight and the soft glow of mana lamps.
Rin lay on her bed. His face was covered with a thin cloth. Audrey covered her mouth with both hands and let out a silent squeal, her shoulders shaking with excitement.
"He’s really here," she whispered.
She spun around, suddenly nervous, like she didn’t know what to do with her own hands. She paced once, twice, then hurried to her drawer and pulled it open.
She took out a pair of clean gloves with, soft leather.
"I don’t want to hurt your skin," she murmured as she slipped them on.
She gently removed the cloth from Rin’s face and lifted a mana light.
The soft glow revealed every detail... his pale skin, long lashes, relaxed expression. He looked peaceful and vulnerable.
Audrey swallowed.
"...How can someone look like this?" she whispered. "He’s literally so..."
Her hand hovered above his face. She wanted to touch him. She stopped herself at the last second.
"No," she said sharply to herself. "I can’t do this. Or else, I’ll ruin everything."
She dropped the mana light and rushed to her bedside, kneeling to pull out a book hidden beneath it. The pages were old and worn, filled with strange symbols.
She flipped through it quickly, found the page she wanted, and ripped it out.
Without hesitation, she grabbed a dagger and slashed her palm. Blood was spilt immediately.
Audrey squeezed her bleeding hand over the torn page, letting the blood soak into it.
She began to chant.
Her voice was low and steady, repeating the same words again and again. The air in the room grew heavy. The lights flickered.
Her eyes slowly turned black.
The floor trembled.
A shadow rose from the blood-stained page, stretching upward, filling the room with pressure so strong it made Audrey’s knees hit the floor.
She bowed deeply, pressing her forehead to the ground.
"Why have you summoned me?"
"I have him," she said, her voice shaking. "I have the person you want. Rin is here."
The shadow shifted.
"Where?"
The voice did not come from a mouth. It echoed everywhere. Audrey lifted her head slightly and pointed toward the bed.
"There."
Silence followed.
The pressure grew heavier. Audrey swallowed hard. She didn’t know why a demon wanted Rin. Maybe it wanted to kill Rin. But she didn’t care about it. All she wanted was her freedom.
"Should I kill him now?" she asked carefully.
"Kill him?"
The room shook violently.
Audrey slammed her head back down to the floor.
"I’m sorry!" she cried. "Forgive me! Forgive my ignorance!"
"Leave."
That was all it said.
Audrey didn’t hesitate. She scrambled to her feet, bowed deeply again, and fled the room, slamming the door behind her.
The shadow shifted.
Slowly, it shrank.
The massive presence folded in on itself until it became something small.
A small dog landed softly on the floor. It hurried toward the bed.
"Woof..."
It barked quietly.
Then it whined, pawing gently at Rin’s side like it was telling him to wake up. Rin’s eyes snapped open when he heard the bark.
He stared at the ceiling for a second, then turned his head slowly.
"...Niblet?"
He covered his mouth with his hand, his eyes wide.
"Am I dreaming?"
The dog jumped onto his chest and licked his face eagerly.
Rin let out a small laugh and wrapped his arms around it, hugging it tightly.
"You idiot," he whispered. "What are you doing here?"
The dog only wagged its tail.
Rin sighed. "Right. You can’t talk."
He looked around the room, his expression sharpening.
"...This obviously isn’t the Vortellion estate. I guess Mirielle moved me elsewhere."
He sat up quickly. "I have to get out of here."
The dog jumped down from the bed. Rin wasn’t paying attention to it as he was looking for a way to leave but he felt the change in energy as its body darkened. Shadows wrapped around it as the shape stretched.
Bones cracked. The air rippled.
Rin froze.
The shadow rose taller and taller until a human figure stood before him.
Dark hair. Sharp eyes. A confident smile.
The man knelt before Rin and bowed deeply, placing a hand on his chest.
"Master."
Rin’s mind went blank as he blinked five times in one second.
"...Niblet?" he asked slowly.
The man smiled.
"I may be Niblet," he said calmly. "Or Cerberus."
He lifted his head, eyes burning with loyalty.
"Call me whatever you want, Master."
Rin stared at him with his mouth still open. Then he closed it.
Then...
"...What?"
