Chapter 819: Anemia
Chapter 819: Anemia
Upon hearing the voice, Charlotte Smith’s once dazed mind felt like it was suddenly frozen, and in an instant, she became completely alert.
She opened her eyes, and a glaring white light filled her vision. Robert Stephens stood by the window, holding an unlit cigarette between his slender, fair fingertips.
Charlotte’s mind was a jumble, yet she felt calm, as if she were torn into two separate people, unsure of what to say to the man standing before her.
Robert walked over, standing against the white light in front of her, looked down and asked, "Don’t you have anything to say to me?"
Charlotte stared blankly at him.
Robert was still the same, his young and handsome face bore a natural air of superiority, something he’s had since childhood.
She lay on the bed, feeling small and insignificant in front of him.
She softly asked, "Why are you here?"
Robert glanced at her with a cold laugh, "You caused something like this, how could I not come?"
Caused...
Something like this...
Of course, he already knew she was pregnant.
Surely, she fainted at the hospital, and he found her there. How could he not know what was happening to her?
Charlotte pressed her lips tightly, saying nothing more.
Robert looked at her stubborn expression, almost amused, "Charlotte, I didn’t realize you had the guts for this. Do you have a death wish?"
Charlotte slightly trembled, her voice hoarse, "What do you plan to do with me?"
Robert glanced at her, threw the cigarette into the trash, and sat on the sofa.
He said coldly, "Now you’re scared?"
Scared?
If she weren’t scared, why would she flee in the night to hide in such a poor country from him?
Charlotte felt exhausted, as though she had painstakingly tried to avoid a predetermined fate, yet couldn’t escape it.
No matter how she struggled, she would ultimately end up in Robert’s hands.
He would still discover her child.
She stared desolately at the ceiling, feeling disheartened.
Robert seemed to want to say more, but the nurse walked in, silencing him as he exited the room.
Charlotte saw his tense profile, sensing his foul mood.
Of course, he was about to get engaged to Janet Madison next month, and suddenly finding out he might have an illegitimate child... even Robert’s broad-mindedness couldn’t easily accept that.
The nurse came over, speaking heavily accented English, asking how she was.
Charlotte struggled to sit up, feeling dizzy, her limbs weak to the point of absurdity.
She asked the nurse, "What’s wrong with me?"
The nurse handed her the physical examination report, informing her she had severe anemia and that without proper treatment, the baby inside would be at risk.
Anemia...
Charlotte thought about the recent dizzy spells and fainting, realizing it was all due to anemia?
She looked over the report; as a pregnant woman she was completely inadequate—deficient in everything, not only needing iron supplements but calcium and progesterone too, overall requiring hospitalization.
Charlotte always felt she had taken decent care of herself during the pregnancy, not expecting to almost cause herself malnutrition.
After the nurse left, she gently touched her slightly rounded abdomen, unable to help but sigh in relief. However, the moment of relief was short-lived, as the door opened again and the man dressed in black entered, leaving a faint scent of smoke in the air, his brow deeply furrowed.
Charlotte held her breath once more.
