Chapter 30
Chapter 30
"Lena." Roxanne looked at Annette and said, "It was a done deal. There are two open positions, and your name was replaced by Lena's. Annette, you have been tricked by Kyle, Lena, and Fiona."
Annette walked back to the office building.
Roxanne quickly pulled her. "Ann, where are you going?"
"I'm going to ask Fiona."
"Calm down. Fiona is targeting you on purpose." Roxanne tried to stop her.
Annette pursed her lips and smiled. "Don't worry, Roxanne. I have never been this calm. It is not my style to be beaten without fighting back."
Annette went to Fiona's office. She was neither heartbroken nor indignant and just looked at her calmly.
Fiona took off her glasses and put them on the table. She said, "I knew you would come."
"I want to know the reason why I was replaced," Annette said.
"Replaced? The list of candidates has not been announced before the final decision. So, technically, you weren't replaced," Fiona said mockingly.
Annette was indeed naïve.
She believed Fiona's words so easily.
"So, it means that your promise doesn't count, right?" Annette said.
"It counts, but only back then. At that time, Kyle was infatuated with you. I didn't want him to continue the way he was, so I was willing to use the job offer in exchange for his future. But now, he doesn't like you anymore. He fell in love with another annoying woman. Since you are no longer a threat to me, why should I fulfill my promise?"
After saying that, Fiona looked at the pure girl in front of her.
She said with a mocking smile, "I can tell you the truth. As a candidate for teaching at university, you are more suitable than Lena. However, Lena's purpose is the same as yours. She asked for this position. If this can help my son get rid of her, I'll be more than happy to do it."
Annette's eyes remained calm.
She did not get angry. She nodded and turned to leave.
Fiona was a little surprised by Annette's reaction.
She did not expect Annette to be so calm.
A few seconds after Annette left, she pushed the door open again and walked in.
She stood by the door and looked at Fiona. She smiled politely and said, "Since you broke the agreement, don't blame me for doing the same to you. Fiona, don't you want to know whether Kyle still likes me or not? To be honest, I don't know the plan of the Moon Goddess. Anyway, I am quite curious about the second chance."
After that, she turned around and left with a smile.
Fiona clenched her fists and cursed in her heart, 'Damn woman! How dare she threaten me."
Annette reached the gate of the office building. She looked up at the sky with a touch of sadness.
Roxanne had been waiting at the door. She ran over and asked, "What did she say?"
Annette forced a smile. "Roxanne, I planned to treat you to dinner today, but I am not in the mood now. Let's go out for lunch tomorrow. I will buy you a nice meal."
Roxanne felt sorry for Annette.
Annette touched Roxanne's face. "I'm fine, but I need to be alone for a while. Go back first. I'll call you tomorrow."
Then, she walked to the school gate.
Roxanne looked at Annette's back and sighed. She took out her phone angrily and called Kyle, who had not been to school for many days. She had to scold him to vent her anger.
Annette walked along the roadside and went toward her apartment.
She did not have a family and didn't know who she could talk to.
She could only swallow her grievances silently. There was no other way.
A familiar car appeared in front of her.
Connor got out of the car. Just like a week ago, he was holding a bouquet in his hand and smiling at her.
The moment Annette saw him, her eyes instantly turned wet.
Connor walked in front of her and handed her the flowers. "Congratulations! The thesis defense is over."
Annette reached out to take the flower and said, "Thank you."
"Why are you so upset? Is your thesis defense not going well? In my opinion, you will perform well at all times," Connor said.
Annette tried to suppress her emotion and did not make a sound.
Connor frowned and said, "It seems that something has happened to you. What's wrong?"
Annette was a little surprised. He was the first person who could tell from her expression that she was upset.
She was good at hiding her feelings. Thus, the more pain she felt, the more she would try to look normal to others.
Her mother told her to be strong-minded and not to show her weakness to others.
Annette had done well.
The phone in her bag rang.
She lowered her head and opened her bag. She took out her phone and looked at it weakly.
Seeing that it was Kyle calling, she hung up the phone and threw it back into her bag.
Annette had not thought about how to face him.
She took a deep breath and said, "Thank you for the flowers. I need to go home now."
She was about to enter the apartment.
Connor grabbed her wrist and asked, "What happened? Did someone bully you?"
His voice was dignified, and Annette couldn't help but look back at him.
She said, "May I borrow your shoulders?"
After that, she walked forward and pressed her cheek against his shoulder.
Annette felt that she would go crazy if she stayed alone at this time.
In Connor's arms, she tried hard to calm herself down.
"Connor, can you pat my head and tell me that everything will be OK?"
Connor lowered his head to look at Annette in his arms and felt distressed.
He put his arm around her waist and gently stroked her hair with the other hand. He rested his chin on her head and said, "I'm here, and everything will be OK."
Annette's heart twitched and tears streamed down her cheeks.
She thought, 'If Mom was still alive, she would also comfort me like this, right?'
