Chapter 201
Chapter 201
Connor roared in anger, "Are you crazy? Who allowed you to meddle in my affairs?"
Alina felt hurt by his tone.
This was the first time Connor spoke to her in such a tone.
Alina said stubbornly, "I can't just watch as you get slandered. Connor, I told you that between us, there must be at least one to be happy. As long as you are happy, I will be satisfied. I will help you clear all the obstacles."
Connor shouted furiously, "Alina, who told you to act on your own? What makes you think you are helping me?"
Alina was upset and sounded mad. "Why are you mad at me? Annette is Lance's daughter and that can't be changed. If people know it, no one will misunderstand her relationship with Austin. Isn't it a good thing for both you and Annette?"
Connor roared, "Enough! You know nothing!"
Alina raised her eyebrows but she sounded anxious. "I know you are worried that Lucas will be angry after Annette's identity is exposed. Don't. I will talk to Lucas."
Connor said through gritted teeth, "Lucas' objection was nothing to me. Annette hated Lance, and she never wanted anyone to know that she was Lance's daughter. She is very sensitive about it. And she'd rather endure people's taunting and insults than admit her relationship with Lance. Now, you turned her into the person she doesn't want to be the most. Alina, what you did hurt her deeply. Do you know that? If the matter was as easy as you think, would I choose to remain silent until now?"
With that, Alina burst into tears on the other side of the line.
"I'm sorry, Connor. I... I didn't know about any of this. I thought that you didn't say it because you cared about Lucas' feelings," Alina stammered. She choked with sobs. "Connor, what should I do now? I don't want to hurt Ms. Hall. I thought I was helping you. I never want to hurt her..."
Connor cursed angrily, "Why didn't you discuss it with me before you did it?"
"I thought I could help you persuade Lucas after that. This way, both you and Ms. Hall will be grateful to me. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Connor pinched the bridge of his nose.
Alina sobbed, "I'm the biggest trouble in your life. I should disappear from your life. Connor, I'm so sorry for you and Ms. Hall."
She kept apologizing and sobbing on the other side of the line, and suddenly there was a heart-wrenching scream from the care worker in the hospital.
"Ms. Grace, please don't do that. You are pregnant. Ms. Grace, please calm down."
Connor stood up and asked, "Alina, what the hell are you doing?"
But no one responded.
The nurses rushed over after the care worker shouted for help. With great difficulty, they pinned Alina back to bed.
The nurse picked up the phone and said, "Mr. Norman, Ms. Grace was trying to jump off the building just now. The nurses pin her on the bed now. What should we do?"
Connor said in a gloomy voice, "Let her answer the phone."
The nurse handed the phone to Alina.
Alina shook her head and cried, "No. I'm so ashamed and have nothing to say to you."
Connor shouted angrily, "Alina, you've made enough trouble for me. I have a headache now. So, just stop messing around and listen to me."
Alina quieted down and put the phone back to her ear. She said softly, "Connor, I'm sorry."
Connor sighed. "What's the use of apologizing? Things can't be changed anymore. I'm going to see Annette now. Don't act on your own again."
"Ms. Hall must be devastated now because of what I did."
Connor frowned and said, "In fact, not because of you, but me."
Alina choked, "Why?"
Connor was beyond rage and shouted, "You released the news in my name, so I was the one to blame."
Alina fell silent for a moment before she said, "I did that out of good intentions. But since things have gone wrong, I don't have the courage to confess to Ms. Hall. I don't want her to hate me. Connor, please help me. I don't want to be a bad woman."
"If you don't want to be a bad woman, then don't act like one. You keep saying that you did that for my good, yet you made me take the blame. Alina, I don't think I can forgive you even if you apologize."
Connor rubbed his temples and said, "I'll take the blame, but I'm not doing it for you. I just don't want Annette to be poisoned with hatred because of your mistakes. She is my woman, and I will bear her resentment. And you, stay away from us from now on."
Just as Connor was speaking, there was another incoming call. Seeing that it was from Annette, he hung up the call with Alina immediately.
Alina put down her phone and lay down with her back facing everyone. However, there was a strange smile on her face.
She thought, 'I have turned Connor into a bad person?
If Annette valued her dignity, it would be best if she never forgave him in this lifetime.'
The moment Connor picked up Annette's call, Annette hung up.
He dialed Annette's number back.
Annette sat by the flower bed, looking down at the caller ID on her phone without moving.
Sara said worriedly, "Annette, just pick up the phone."
Annette pressed the answer button and put the phone beside her ear.
Connor said, "Did you see the news?"
Annette asked weakly, "Was it you?"
Connor knew how serious the problem was when he heard her voice.
He sighed, "You're still at school, right? I'll go pick you up."
"Answer me! Was it you?" Annette shouted in a heart-wrenching tone.
Sara was shocked while standing opposite her.
Sara had never seen Annette lose her composure.
Connor comforted Annette, "I can explain this. Wait for me at school. I'm coming."
"Don't." Annette felt a sharp pain in her heart.
Connor's attitude told her that he was the one who exposed her family background.
Annette thought that Connor knew her well.
Unexpectedly, Connor was the person who used her background to hurt her.
Annette hung up the phone and got up.
Sara supported her.
"Annette, what exactly happened? Is the matter so serious?"
Annette lowered her eyes and smiled bitterly. "Sara, just go. I'll take a walk alone."
"No, I'll stay with you."
Annette turned to look at Sara.
Sara said firmly, "I know you are in a bad mood right now. If I let you leave alone and something happened to you, I would never forgive myself."
Annette lowered her head and said, "Then, can you take me home?"
"Sure. Let's go." Sara held Annette's arm.
