Chapter 200
Chapter 200
Little did Annette expect that her news with Austin would become a trending topic for a second time.
Austin came to see her at noon yesterday. A photo of them talking at the school gate was secretly taken and posted online.
The matter quickly boiled over.
Annette looked through the comments posted by fence-sitters every day, pulling a wry face.
She supported her forehead with one hand and figured that her reputation as a philandering woman had been ingrained in people's minds.
Sara looked at Annette worriedly and said, "Annette, take it easy."
Annette nodded.
Alanna couldn't suppress her curiosity. She asked in a low voice, "Annette, tell me, OK? What is your relationship with Austin?"
Annette shrugged and said, "Certainly not the kind described online."
"Isn't Alpha Connor mad that you and Austin are rumored this frequently?"
Thinking of Connor, Annette had a headache.
Annette shook her head. "It's fine. He knows that nothing is going on between Austin and me."
After work at noon, Annette found time to stop by the Norman Group.
Connor wasn't affected at all. He was busy with his work.
He asked as he saw her, "What do you want for lunch? I'll get Hari to order it."
Annette said, "Anything. I have no appetite anyway."
"Why? Because of some stupid news? Let them talk. I know I'm your man and the only one, and that's enough."
Annette gave him a thumbs-up and said, "Alpha Connor, you are awesome."
"Thanks. Now, tell me, what do you want to eat?"
Annette thought for a few seconds and then named a few dishes.
Connor quickly got Hari to order the food.
Within half an hour, someone brought their lunch over.
While Connor and Annette were eating, Hari knocked on the door and came in.
"Alpha Connor, I've got it. Jessica was the one who contacted the reporter."
Annette looked at Hari. She asked curiously, "Jessica? Wasn't she still in the hospital?"
Hari replied seriously, "That's true, but the news was provided under her name."
Annette put down her cutlery and said angrily, "What's the matter with Jessica? I wasn't the one who posted her indecent photos at the bar. No, something was off. I don't think it was her. At least, for the sake of Austin, she wouldn't do this. Besides, she nearly died and didn't have the strength to do so."
Connor nodded in agreement with Annette. Then he looked at Hari and said, "Go check again. It wasn't Jessica."
But other than Jessica, who else would hate Annette so much?
Annette had a headache.
After the meal, Annette rested for a few minutes before going back to school.
Just as she left, Connor's phone rang. It was Alina.
Connor picked it up, and Alina asked, "Connor, are you alright?"
"Why shouldn't I be?"
"I saw the news," Alina frowned and said. "Why aren't you doing anything? Aren't you angry when others mock you?"
Connor said coldly, "Things between me and Annette are none of your concern."
"I can't watch you suffer."
"As I said, this is none of your business. I have a meeting, so I'll hang up."
Alina felt that her anger was about to engulf her.
She thought, 'My heart is in the right place, but he snubs me.
I hate her.
I want my old Connor back.
Connor chooses to be silent, but I can't.'
She took a deep breath. Now was a good time to say something.
As soon as Annette got into the office, Connor sent her a picture of Judica calling from a phone booth.
Annette was puzzled, so she replied with a question mark.
Connor texted: "We were right. The person who called the reporter was Judica. This is the intersection surveillance based on the caller number provided by the reporter."
Annette gritted her teeth. She thought, 'Good for you, Judica. You told and framed others. You are a piece of work.
What a shame. You bark at the wrong tree.'
Just as she was about to reply to Connor, Connor had already sent her another message.
"I know you can take care of Judica, but don't do it yet. I've got a trap for her."
Annette felt that with Connor involved, Judica would only suffer more.
So, she agreed.
In the afternoon, Annette worked as usual, as if nothing had happened.
Alanna was furious, and she kept replying to those online comments.
When she saw other news related to Annette, she couldn't help but be shocked.
She looked at Annette and asked excitedly, "Annette, are you the second daughter in the Fisher family?"
Hearing Alanna's words, Annette pulled a long face and looked at Alanna.
Alanna raised her phone and said, "Alpha Connor clarified that you and Austin were not having an affair and that you were siblings."
Annette was in her seat. She was completely stunned.
She did not hear another word from Alanna.
There was only one voice in her mind, saying, "Connor turned her into Lance's daughter."
Seeing that Annette didn't look good, Sara gently nudged Annette's arm and asked in concern, "Annette, are you alright?"
Annette came back to her senses and shook her head as she looked at Sara.
Then Annette stood up, but just as she took a step, she felt her legs weak.
Sara supported her nimbly, preventing her from falling.
"Annette."
Alanna came over to support Annette as well and asked, "What's wrong, Annette? Did I say something wrong?"
Annette looked at Alanna and said hastily, "Alanna, may I take a look at the news?"
Alanna quickly handed Annette the phone.
Annette sat back in her chair again and looked down at the news on the phone.
The news said Connor had called a reporter this afternoon to prove that Annette, his wife, was not the promiscuous woman others claimed she was.
He also said that Annette was very devoted to their relationships and that she and Austin were not in a romantic relationship, as others had suggested.
In fact, Annette was Lance's daughter. She and Austin were half-siblings with the same father.
She put the phone on the desk and raised her hands to cover her eyes.
Sara and Alanna glanced at each other.
Sara said, "Annette, you don't look well. Do you want to get some rest?"
"Yes. Thank you." It sounded like Annette was about to cry.
Sara helped Annette up.
Alanna hurriedly asked, "Do you want me to tag along?"
Sara winked at her and said, "Why don't you help Annette to ask for a day off?"
"Alright."
Sara and Annette left the office building and walked to the flower bed. Annette sat down.
Sara crouched down in front of her and whispered, "Annette, you look awfully pale. Should I take you to the hospital?"
Annette felt noises in her ears and shook her head.
She held her phone and dialed Connor's number.
The line was busy.
Meanwhile, Connor had already seen the news.
And his heart sank as he saw it.
He dialed Alina's number without hesitation.
"Were you behind this?"
Alina said calmly, "Yes."
