Chapter 85: Waiting for a Rabbit
Chapter 85: Waiting for a Rabbit
For this dinner, Dean Zhang specially prepared two bottles of 20-year-old Flying Moutai, each worth over ten thousand. As soon as the cap was opened, the room was filled with a delightful aroma.
Director Jiang personally poured a glass for Xu Xiangbei, his expression complex and full of emotions.
"I only have one son, Jiang Xinwen. During the past year, I’ve been running around, hopping between hospitals for him, and have hardly focused on work. Originally, I was to go to the provincial office, but due to poor performance, I was demoted to Jiangcheng. It’s true that a blessing often comes in disguise; unexpectedly, I met Younger Brother Xu here, who cured my son’s illness. I’m very thankful to everyone present, especially Divine Doctor Xu. Though he is younger than me, why don’t we become sworn brothers? I’ll call him my younger brother as I’m a few years older. This cup is for my respect to everyone."
Director Jiang tipped his head back and drank the glass clean.
Having a police director as an elder brother, Xu Xiangbei felt it was worthwhile and not to be outdone, drank his glass clean, "Elder Brother is straightforward; I’m definitely keeping this brother."
Dean Zhang and his nephew were also happy for Director Jiang; they played the role of perfect matchmakers in this introduction.
Director Tang felt most awkward among them. He originally planned to butter up Director Jiang, inciting him to arrest Xu Xiangbei, but instead, Director Jiang became brothers with Xu Xiangbei.
Nonetheless, having been in the medical field for decades, his thick skin was well-trained, so he not only continued flattering Director Jiang but started flattering Xu Xiangbei as well.
"Divine Doctor Xu truly is a genius in our traditional medicine community. Though I don’t quite understand his methods, he can cure ailments instantly, which is the mark of a great doctor. Black cat, white cat, as long as it catches mice, it’s a good cat."
However, his flattery didn’t really work; Xu Xiangbei was still blunt, "Bah, shut up! You’re the black cat, white cat; you’re a quack! You can sit here and drink but don’t speak. If you blabber again, I’ll toss you out of this room."
Director Tang chuckled dryly twice, "I’ll shut up, only drink, and won’t talk."
Jiang Xinwen, being able to speak again, made Director Jiang very happy but also slightly concerned, "Is his illness completely cured? Will it relapse?"
"It shouldn’t relapse. With the fluid cleared out, he can naturally speak normally. However, for a complete recovery, besides acupuncture on the Fengfu and Fengchi points, there should be one more needle on the Tianling point. The child’s brain is very fragile, and I’m worried too much stimulation might have adverse effects. The third needle will be done three days later."
Hearing about no relapse, Director Jiang felt a weight lifted from his heart. The entire family had been preoccupied for the past year, unable to relax, "Then it all relies on Younger Brother Xu. I’ll bring Jiang Xinwen to visit you again in three days."
"I’m usually quite busy, it might be hard to find me; why don’t I come directly to your house in three days."
"Alright, it’s settled."
Having drunk too much, Xu Xiangbei couldn’t drive back, opting to take a taxi to Spring Villa.
Arriving at the neighborhood gate, Xu Xiangbei hummed a tune as he got out of the taxi, noticing the lively ambiance tonight.
Two several hundred-watt lights were pulled from the security room, like little suns, brightly illuminating the gate, with many groups of people gathered around.
Was it an event or square dancing? Where was the music?
It turned out they were burly men with shoulder-width backs, each holding bright steel pipes, waiting assertively for something.
Young Master Tang, with bandages on his head and arm, along with his blond-haired friend, sat in chairs, glaring fiercely at every passerby like predators seeking prey.
Residents going in and out had tense expressions, avoiding from afar, uncertain of the intentions of these men; strangely, the security room door was tightly shut, paying no heed.
Xu Xiangbei didn’t need to think to know they were certainly looking for him.
After breaking Young Master Tang’s arm, he immediately called his father.
Upon hearing his son’s arm was broken at his Spring Villa, he flew into a rage, harshly rebuking security captain Chen Dahai.
Security guard Liu Yong knew it was Xu Xiangbei who hit Young Master Tang but didn’t disclose it, compounded by no surveillance cameras in the area; only knowing it was a neighborhood resident, Chen Dahai gathered some thugs at the gate waiting in ambush.
Intoxicated, Xu Xiangbei hummed a song as he approached Young Master Tang, greeting him with a cheeky grin, "Hi, Young Master Tang, haven’t recognized me, have you? How’s the broken arm, seen a doctor?"
Young Master Tang had been glaring at the gate all night, without spotting his attacker, his eyes were tired; whether a head injury or poor memory, he didn’t recognize Xu Xiangbei. He had not clearly seen Xu Xiangbei before being smacked, shattering glass, and breaking his arm.
He found Xu Xiangbei familiar, thinking he was an acquaintance; but Young Master Tang was well-known throughout the neighborhood.
He replied dejectedly, "Just back from the hospital, pulverized fracture."
Xu Xiangbei chuckled, "With your memory, even death wouldn’t be too much for you; you’d better behave. If you dare act recklessly again, I’ll break your other arm."
Young Master Tang’s face turned ghostly pale, retreating in panic, frantically shouting to the burly men, "Oh my god, it’s him! How dare you joke with me, today you’re dead here. Found him, it’s this guy, found him."
The blond-haired youth, nervously staring at Xu Xiangbei, dared not approach, shouted from afar, "Found him, it’s this guy."
Xu Xiangbei scratched his ear, "What’s all the noise? Annoying, finding who? Do I owe you money, searching with lanterns?"
Over ten burly men wielding steel pipes, impatient from the wait, charged forward once knowing the target, surrounding Xu Xiangbei tightly.
Seeing Xu Xiangbei encircled by his men, Young Master Tang approached confidently with a grin, "Ha! Want to hit me and run; now you can’t escape, you’re doomed."
Despite being surrounded by more than ten burly men, Xu Xiangbei wasn’t panicked at all, speaking with booze on his breath, "Run? Why should I run? I’m hitting you to teach you a lesson, why run? Let me tell you, once I knock them down, I’ll smack you, and I’ll hit you every time I see you, believe it or not?"
Smelling the booze on Xu Xiangbei’s breath, Young Master Tang decided he was speaking nonsense, sneering contemptuously, "Kid, surrounded by my men, acting cocky; brothers, hit him."
His stitches on his forehead pulled from laughing too hard, making his voice slur in pain.
The burly men swung their steel pipes; under the lights, they gleamed menacingly like vipers, crashing down towards Xu Xiangbei.
