Chapter 19: Trash, Stop Making Noise
Chapter 19: Trash, Stop Making Noise
Outside the First People’s Hospital, under the shade of lush trees, Xu Xiangbei wandered to the wooden bench under a sycamore tree and sat down.
He took out half a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, pulled one out and stuck it in his mouth. Looking around a bit guiltily, he didn’t spot that nosy little nurse, so he comfortably lit the cigarette and took a delightful puff.
Many young girls walked back and forth on the road, dressed very coolly in hot pants, short skirts, and tank tops, each with a graceful figure.
While blowing smoke rings, Xu Xiangbei whistled flirtatiously at the passing girls.
"Pervert!"
"Creep!"
Many girls rolled their eyes and muttered curses under their breath before quickly walking away after being harassed.
"I’m so handsome, how do I look like a sleazy guy?"
Xu Xiangbei finished his cigarette but didn’t attract any beauties rushing into his arms. Feeling a bit down, he extinguished the butt and prepared to leave.
"Mr. Xu!"
Suddenly, a well-dressed middle-aged man jogged over. It was Zhang Xuesong, whom he had met once by the South Mountain Lake. "I’m sorry, I was in such a hurry I couldn’t come downstairs to welcome you. I hope you haven’t been waiting long?"
Xu Xiangbei shook his head, grinning cheekily, "So, why did you come looking for me? Is it because some little nurse is admiring me and asked you to introduce her to me as a girlfriend?"
Zhang Xuesong’s expression stiffened, and he awkwardly rubbed his hands, "Mr. Xu, it’s my uncle, Dean Zhang Fuen, who wants to meet you. I’ll take you to his office now."
"Hey, I told you, I’m busy, I need to go to the university town to meet some girls. I don’t have time to give any lectures to the deans of the First or Second Hospital."
Xu Xiangbei frowned a little unpleasantly, but then quickly changed his tone and got close to Zhang Xuesong, eyes gleaming, "How much are you paying me for this appearance?"
Zhang Xuesong was momentarily at a loss, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
Zhang Fuen, as the dean of the First People’s Hospital, was a leading figure in both Jiangcheng and the traditional Chinese medicine community. Many people wanted to meet Zhang Fuen but couldn’t find an opportunity, yet this Xu Xiangbei, with an impatient attitude, was directly invited by him.
However, on second thought, knowing that Xu Xiangbei was a miracle doctor who mastered the legendary Eight Needles of Destiny, it was understandable for him to have some temperament. So, Zhang Xuesong smiled and said, "To be honest, my uncle intends to offer you a nice position with a base salary of thirty thousand yuan a month plus commissions. I wonder if you’re interested..."
While speaking, Zhang Xuesong kept observing Xu Xiangbei’s expression out of the corner of his eye, afraid that offering too little might upset him.
"What!? Thirty thousand yuan a month?"
Xu Xiangbei shouted exaggeratedly, suddenly draping an arm around Zhang Xuesong’s shoulder.
"Mr. Xu, we can negotiate the salary; as long as you’re willing to join the First People’s Hospital, everything can be discussed."
Zhang Xuesong’s face turned red, thinking Xu Xiangbei was angry.
After all, with Xu Xiangbei’s miraculous knack for the Eight Needles of Destiny, he indeed deserved the honor of being called a miracle doctor, and giving him a monthly salary of thirty thousand was indeed a bit stingy.
"Let’s go, let’s go sign the contract now."
Xu Xiangbei affectionately pulled Zhang Xuesong’s hand and entered the hospital.
Zhang Xuesong was overjoyed and took Xu Xiangbei to the dean’s office on the seventh floor.
"Dean Zhang, I heard you intend to give the position of Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department to an outsider? I absolutely disagree!"
As they approached the door, they heard a furious voice from inside the office, "I’ve been the Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department at the First People’s Hospital for thirty years now, devotedly working and serving. Although I’m about to retire, the position should rightly go to my son Tang Hao."
"Director Tang, please calm down, let me explain slowly..."
An elderly voice came out, gentle and conciliatory.
At this point, Xu Xiangbei and Zhang Xuesong walked into the office.
"Dean, as the saying goes, promote talent without avoiding relatives. Though my father is the Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department and my immediate superior, I am a top graduate of a first-class medical university in the country and have worked under my father for seven or eight years with hundreds of successful surgeries. Though my skills may not surpass my father’s, I have at least inherited 80%. I believe that I am the most suitable candidate to take up the post of director."
A man in his thirties, wearing a white coat, said agitatedly in front of the desk.
"Uncle, this is the miraculous doctor Xu Xiangbei that I mentioned to you."
Not even glancing at Tang Hao and his father, Zhang Xuesong introduced Xu Xiangbei to Dean Zhang Fuen, an elderly man appearing to be in his sixties or seventies, with a beaming smile.
Zhang Fuen, despite his age, had a radiant complexion and seemed very energetic.
"Are you Mr. Xu? I’ve heard that you possess the miraculous ability to revive the dead and can even cure Mr. Gu’s illness. Now that I’ve met you, it’s true that a hero comes from the youth."
Upon seeing Xu Xiangbei, Zhang Fuen immediately stood up from his seat, offered his hand, and even turned to instruct Zhang Xuesong, "Xuesong, quickly pour a cup of water for the miracle doctor."
Xu Xiangbei gave a rather casual handshake with Dean Zhang Fuen, sat down leisurely, and crossed his legs, saying, "So you’re Dean Zhang? I’ve heard that you want to offer me the position of Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department for thirty thousand yuan a month. I’m very satisfied, let’s sign the contract now."
"Huh?"
Instantly, Tang Hao and his father frowned and looked at Xu Xiangbei with some displeasure.
"Mr. Xu, please don’t be in such a rush. Let me tell you about our hospital’s situation..."
Zhang Fuen chuckled dryly and cleared his throat, just about to speak, but Xu Xiangbei impatiently interrupted him, "I’m a rather lazy person, at most, I’ll come to work three days a week. If a beautiful woman asks me out, I might skip work, but rest assured, any patient I handle will be cured. If there aren’t any problems, let’s sign the contract."
Zhang Xuesong was handing over a cup of tea when he stumbled at these words, almost spilling it all over Xu Xiangbei.
The smile on Zhang Fuen’s face froze as he looked at Xu Xiangbei with an odd expression.
What does this kid think the hospital is?
An amusement park?
Come and go as he pleases?
"Dean, is this the talent you’re offering a high salary to hire?"
Nearby, Director Tang, a somewhat chubby man in his fifties or sixties, stood up and pointed at Xu Xiangbei, sneering, "This young man looks barely in his twenties. What medical skills could he possess? Moreover, he has such a careless attitude, lacking any sense of discipline or responsibility. How can someone like this be fit to be the director at our hospital? Wouldn’t that ruin our hospital’s reputation?"
Tang Hao also sneered at this moment, "Dean Zhang, I’ve always respected you, but in this matter, you’ve greatly disappointed me. A hospital isn’t a place for any Tom, Dick, or Harry to casually make a living. If someone without any skills can become director, who’ll bear the responsibility if a medical accident occurs in the future?"
Zhang Fuen slumped back into his chair, stroking his goatee, unable to respond.
"Hey, can you two trash not shut up? You’re noisier than women."
Xu Xiangbei sipped some tea, speaking in a frivolous tone, scolding them.
