Chapter 18: My Name is Angel
Chapter 18: My Name is Angel
Gu Xiangyi dropped Xu Xiangbei off at the entrance of the First People’s Hospital and then drove off with a roar.
Xu Xiangbei stood there somewhat dejectedly, looking around but seeing no one to greet him. Helplessly, he started walking inside the hospital by himself.
On the way, he groped inside his pocket and found the only remaining cigar he had snatched yesterday, happily lighting it up.
"Sir, please be considerate; this is a hospital, and you cannot smoke here."
A cute-looking nurse happened to pass by, glaring at Xu Xiangbei sternly.
"What? I can’t hear you. Nurse, do you know where the ENT department is? I’ve suddenly gone deaf."
Xu Xiangbei played deaf with a roguish smile while taking heavy puffs on his cigar, thinking it too good to waste.
"Snap."
The nurse grabbed the cigar, threw it to the ground, extinguished it with a stomp, and then tossed it into the trash bin. "Such lack of manners."
Xu Xiangbei scratched his head, awkwardly smiling as he watched the nurse’s graceful figure sway away.
"Doctor, didn’t I just deposit five thousand yuan this morning? Why am I in arrears again?"
"Madam, the patient is in the ICU, and it’s very expensive. The daily cost runs one or two thousand; you should be prepared for it."
"What should I do? We’re farmers; where can we get this much money?"
As Xu Xiangbei passed by the payment booth, a gray-haired old lady was wiping her tears with a payment slip in hand. Beside her, a ten-year-old girl was also crying loudly, her young face covered in tears, tugging at one’s heartstrings.
"Madam, don’t cry. Money is like water; if it’s spent, you can earn more."
Xu Xiangbei kindly stepped forward to comfort her.
"I’m old, with only a small piece of land. Where could I earn money? Poor old man at home..."
The old lady cried even more sorrowfully.
"Young man, if you can’t console people, say nothing."
"Really, some people just don’t know how to read the situation."
"Madam, please don’t cry. Try borrowing from relatives and friends. No matter what, treatment is necessary!"
People in the payment queue all stepped forward to console her.
"Doctor, can I use a card?"
Xu Xiangbei took out a black card and handed it to the doctor, "If possible, top up fifty thousand yuan for the old lady’s husband."
"You can use a card, but... are you joking?"
The doctor took Xu Xiangbei’s black card, looking at him strangely.
Everyone around was dumbfounded, looking at Xu Xiangbei incredulously as if he were a fool.
Fifty thousand is no small amount.
Even if you’re being kind, isn’t this too much?
"Young man, that’s too much. Her son passed away, her daughter-in-law remarried, there’s only a daughter left, and there’s no way we can repay this!"
The old lady, seeing the situation, grabbed Xu Xiangbei’s hand, speaking quickly.
"Madam, money is just a series of numbers; you can always earn more. I have nothing else to worry about except not having enough places to spend my money."
Xu Xiangbei grinned while holding the old lady’s hands, crusted with calluses.
The old lady, startled, looked at Xu Xiangbei curiously.
The crowd behind started whispering, their eyes filled with skepticism, clearly not believing Xu Xiangbei would really pay for her medical bills.
"Sir, are you serious about the payment?"
The duty doctor asked.
"Yes, do it!"
Xu Xiangbei waved his hand grandly.
The duty doctor hesitated no more, swiping the black card quickly and handing the fee receipt to the old lady.
"Fifty thousand?"
The old lady held the payment slip, checking it over and over, trembling in shock, "Young man, what are you doing? We can’t repay this! Besides, the expenses for my husband should only be twenty to thirty thousand; fifty thousand is too much!"
"Madam, use this money for the treatment, and the remainder to live well."
Xu Xiangbei smiled slightly, unconcerned about the fifty thousand.
After all, it’s not cash.
It’s a black card, not his own money, so what’s there to feel bad about?
Chen Ban City should be the one feeling bad!
"Wow, you’re really a kind-hearted person!"
"There are truly few good-hearted people like you left now!"
"Young man, I have a daughter, nineteen years old and quite pretty. Can I introduce her to you?"
Instantly, a group of people surrounded him, creating a noisy scene.
"Everyone who needs to pay, swipe on my card!"
Xu Xiangbei laid the black card onto the counter proudly, saying, "Listen, it must be over fifty thousand, or I’ll be upset!"
Whoosh!
Immediately, a crowd surged forward, eagerly swiping the card.
Xu Xiangbei stood by, receiving everyone’s thanks with a bright smile on his face.
"Young man, let me kowtow to you!"
The old lady, holding the little girl, approached Xu Xiangbei, bowing to kneel in gratitude.
Xu Xiangbei hurriedly stepped forward to stop her: "Madam, please don’t. I’m just trying to help a bit."
"A good person, a good person indeed..." the old lady exclaimed tearfully.
Within just over ten minutes, the once crowded payment window cleared out, as people surrounded Xu Xiangbei to thank him, each wearing a joyful smile.
Holding the black card, Xu Xiangbei struggled to squeeze out of the crowd. There was no choice, with about ten people trying to introduce their daughters to him, if he stayed longer, he’d turn into the nation’s husband.
"Big brother, are you an angel?"
Before leaving, the young girl who had cried tearfully next to the old lady called out to Xu Xiangbei’s retreating figure.
Xu Xiangbei turned back with a bright smile: "That’s right, I’m an angel sent by God to help you!"
The little girl grinned through her tears, her face a tear-streaked mess like a kitten, but her smile was exceptionally charming.
Xu Xiangbei walked towards the men’s restroom; his cigar was gone. So he made do, taking out his cigarettes. He placed one in his mouth, lit it, took a silent drag, and exhaled with contentment, "Ah, doing good feels great!"
"Hey, is it you again!"
Suddenly, a small nurse in a white coat stormed out of the women’s restroom, marching up to Xu Xiangbei angrily: "How many times must I tell you, no smoking in public places. Are you going to play deaf again?"
Xu Xiangbei quickly extinguished the butt, sheepishly laughing: "Honey, I won’t dare anymore."
"Bah, who’s your honey!"
The nurse kicked at Xu Xiangbei.
Xu Xiangbei turned and fled; a good man doesn’t argue with women.
"Girl, girl..."
At that moment, the old lady, holding the little girl, hurried over and called out to the nurse: "Are you the benefactor’s wife?"
"Madam, what are you talking about?"
The nurse frowned: "I don’t even have a boyfriend yet."
The old lady saw Xu Xiangbei had run off, regretfully slapped her thigh: "Oh no, oh no, I completely forgot to ask his name or where he lives!"
"Benefactor?"
The nurse blinked in confusion.
"Grandma, I know, he’s called Angel!"
The little girl’s voice rang like silver bells.
"Angel?"
The nurse grew even more puzzled, and after the old lady tearfully recounted what Xu Xiangbei had done, she finally understood.
"This guy..."
The nurse stood there with a complex expression, staring blankly at the path Xu Xiangbei had taken, feeling a sudden pang of guilt.
She wondered if she should have let him have that cigarette.
The nurse sighed quietly to herself.
