Chapter 253 – The Black Dragon vs The Dragonborn.
Chapter 253 – The Black Dragon vs The Dragonborn.
[Chapter Size: 3000 Words.]
Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
The roar of the black dragon echoed across the field at the beginning of dusk, making several men freeze for a moment.
The air seemed to vibrate. No, to tremble.
"SHIELDS! HOLD THE SHIELDS!" the captains shouted, forcing the formation to close.
The soldiers raised their defenses, some steady, others visibly hesitant. Their hands trembled, their eyes were fixed on the sky as the creature descended faster and faster, almost no longer visible as darkness began to take shape in the sky.
But it was there, the sound of its wings said so, and it was possible to see the black mass beginning to tilt toward them... It was getting closer and closer.
Daemon was already in motion. He pulled the reins as the horse dashed across the field.
He struck the side of the horse, making its speed increase.
"Faster, boy!" Daemon said, even using his warg ability so the horse could truly obey him, and it did as it surged forward at full speed.
The men ahead barely had time to react when he passed, many only watching the black dragon approaching. Some were pushed aside, others simply making way as they realized where he was going.
"Is that the king?!"
"Has he gone mad?" someone shouted.
"He's going toward the dragon!"
Daemon didn't seem to care. His eyes were fixed on the black mass descending in the sky.
Daemon looked at the formation, his men continued holding their lines, even though they could die there, as they had an idea of what a dragon was capable of after seeing Winter in action several times.
He was getting closer and closer, his goal was to intercept the dragon, to reach it when it was near the ground to unleash flames.
The green dragon, which Daemon had already been controlling for some time, was not a concern. Even though the men on the other side were frightened and the dragon was approaching, it would not get close enough. That was just a feint, a way to draw in the black dragon and prevent Blackfyre from becoming desperate upon learning he had lost yet another of his dragons.
The black dragon was not the kind of dragon that could be easily persuaded, so it needed to be subdued with brute force, and Daemon was more than willing to do so.
Daemon was already reaching the front line. The dragon descended to attack his men, and he quickly turned the horse and rode at high speed toward them, who were already prepared to die.
When the dragon got close enough, it opened its mouth, with flames beginning to emerge between its teeth.
Daemon calculated the timing with precision. The moment the dragon was about to release those flames, already above his soldiers, his lungs filled and his eyes shone with power. In the next instant, he unleashed his voice.
"Joor Zah Frul"
The Thu'um he released roared like thunder, drowning out even the sound of the dragon itself. The energy surged forward immediately, repelling the flames and striking the creature head-on.
People barely had time to process what was happening. When the blue energy struck it, blue chains began to emerge around the dragon, interrupting its flight.
The dragon began to fall in freefall, unable to unleash more flames. It passed over the first line of men with shields and over Daemon, crashing into the ground and digging into the earth as it rolled, unable to open its wings at that moment.
The men immediately ran, seeing the massive body tear through the ground with the force of the impact. Some were not so lucky and ended up being crushed by the dragon.
Daemon quickly turned the horse and charged at full speed toward the dragon, while everyone there — those who were not focused on the green dragon — watched the scene, doubting what they were seeing.
The chains were still there, binding the dragon, which finally came to a stop and tried to break free, but was unable to open its wings. The nearest men began to move away with frightened shouts, while the creature looked around, trying to attack anyone nearby.
In the distance, the green dragon roared, flying through the skies, but did not unleash flames or attack. It angled its body upward, even avoiding the arrows from the archers on the walls.
As for the black dragon, even without being able to use its wings, it began to gather flames in its mouth again, trying to attack the nearby humans. Men still screamed like children and ran in all directions.
As Daemon approached and the dragon was about to strike once more, a force was unleashed against it from behind.
"FUS RO DAH!"
The Unrelenting Force Thu'um struck the dragon before it could unleash flames against his men. The creature was thrown backward by the impact, rolling across the ground until it collided with the city wall, cracking it with force as it let out a groan of pain.
"Get away from the dragon, clear the area, that's an order!!" Daemon shouted to his men as he continued advancing with his horse.
When he got close enough, he simply leaped off the animal and kept running toward the dragon. The horse immediately retreated, obeying Daemon's command.
He summoned the Leviathan Axe into his right hand and a large Valyrian steel shield, which he had made from pieces of steel taken from the citadel, into his left.
The dragon tried to rise once more. The chains still bound it, still preventing it from flying, with pain lingering after being thrown like that, but upon seeing a human running toward it, its eyes gleamed with malice.
For everyone watching the scene, it was impossible even to breathe. They saw their king advancing with an axe and a shield against a dragon over 30 meters long! As if it weren't enough to have seen him knock the creature down and hurl it against the city wall.
Then, they saw the dragon aim at Daemon and unleash flames. Everyone's eyes widened at that. And Daemon simply raised the shield in front of him. The flames engulfed him completely, consuming the entire area around him.
But, in the middle of that inferno, something changed. The flames began to disperse, reflecting in all directions.
Inside it, Daemon remained standing, holding back the dragon's destructive power with nothing but his shield.
A sound cut through the chaos.
Suddenly, the Leviathan Axe flew out from within the flames, spinning through the air before embedding itself directly into the dragon's snout, burying into its flesh.
The creature roared, feeling the pain tear through its nose. The axe began to freeze its snout and mouth, while the dragon shook its head violently, trying to get rid of it. Its mouth grew more and more frozen.
In the next instant, the axe tore free from the flesh, flying back from where it had been thrown, spinning through the air until it returned to Daemon's hand.
The flames began to dissipate.
Daemon emerged in the middle of the burning field with his shield, his armor slightly scorched, but completely intact. In his right hand, the axe. In his left, the shield.
His eyes watched the dragon from behind the slits of his helmet.
The creature could no longer fly because of the Dragonrend Thu'um, and now it could not use its flames either, with its mouth frozen, thanks to the freezing power of the legendary weapon.
The eyewitnesses would never have believed that a man could face a dragon… until that night.
As Daemon advanced through the flames, in front of the creature he himself had completely immobilized, no one paid attention to the other army anymore.
The entire battlefield fell into silence.
Everyone simply watched the king approaching the black dragon… as if it were his prey.
What was happening on the other side?
The sight of the black dragon falling had been seen by Aegon's camp. Everyone there seemed lost, not understanding what was happening before the walls of King's Landing in the distance. But one thing was certain: they saw a dragon fall, while the green dragon simply flew through the sky, with no intention of descending.
"He brought the dragon down..." Harry Strickland said, lowering the spyglass and looking at the faces around him. No one seemed even remotely pleased with that.
"How did he bring the dragon down?" Aegon murmured, feeling a weight in his heart.
The feeling of having lost his dragon to the Greyjoy returned with force.
Would that be his fate? To lose them one after another? 'No... it shouldn't be like this...' he said internally.
Since arriving in Westeros, his failures had only piled up. He could see it. Feel it. Even his own allies already looked at him differently after the encounter with Daemon — the way he was provoked and failed to respond in kind.
He was already losing their trust. And now… he was about to lose another dragon.
His second dragon.
And the other? The third dragon and perhaps his last? It simply flew in the sky… doing nothing to help.
Aegon began to question whether it had been a good idea to send the dragons.
Meanwhile, in front of the walls of King's Landing, a legendary battle was unfolding.
Daemon advanced quickly toward the black dragon, a smile hidden beneath his helmet.
The creature, still with its mouth frozen, tried to crush him by lunging forward with its head. Daemon responded with a strike of his axe, cutting once again along the side of its snout. The dragon roared in pain and recoiled.
It twisted its body and attacked with its tail.
Daemon raised his shield to defend himself, being thrown several meters back until he came to a stop.
But that was nothing. He began to invoke several defenses with alteration spells, such as dragon skin, among others.
He immediately got back up and charged again, striking the dragon's wing as the creature tried to move away and counterattack.
The soldiers watched, in disbelief.
It was like watching a man fight a beast in a duel — except that beast was a dragon.
The creature tried to crush him with its body, with its wings pinned, with its mouth frozen, using its tail to try to kill the king.
And even so, Daemon kept advancing.
He seemed to be enjoying it. Each strike created new cuts across the black dragon's body.
At one moment, he managed to climb onto the creature.
Everyone saw it.
Daemon was on top of the dragon… attacking its face directly, piercing it with the blade of the Leviathan Axe.
That was when the dragon finally managed to unfreeze its mouth. Flames began to build up in its throat continuously, trying to melt the ice by force.
A torrent of fire burst forth, forcing its way through the frozen mouth.
But at that same instant, Daemon turned toward it…
And unleashed another Unrelenting Force Shout. "Fus Ro Dah!"
In the next moment, the dragon felt its body being slammed against the ground itself, as Daemon was on top of its head, directing the shout downward.
He was thrown back shortly after, the impact making him fall once again.
The dragon pulled back a bit and, with its face covered in blood, stared at Daemon, refusing to be subdued by that human.
Daemon placed one leg forward and took a deep breath once more.
The dragon unleashed its flames.
Daemon responded with a fire shout.
"Yol Toor Shul!"
Immediately, flames burst from his mouth with full force, and the two attacks collided midway, exploding in all directions.
Even the people on the walls began to scream and run, as the flames spread and struck everything around.
Man and dragon stood there, clashing fire against fire.
But Daemon's flames were not comparable to those of the dragons of that world. They began to gain strength, consuming the very flames of the black dragon.
The creature didn't even have time to react or dodge once more before Daemon's fire surged forward with full force, striking it directly. It could feel its own scales burning before being thrown back once again, engulfed in flames.
'Good... I can't push more than this, or I'll end up killing it,' Daemon thought, analyzing as he approached the dragon.
It was at that moment that a green mass descended from the sky, frightening the army even more. The green dragon landed on the ground beside Daemon.
Everyone thought the green dragon would help the black dragon… but instead, it positioned itself in front of the flames consuming the wounded creature.
The black dragon emerged from the fire, roaring. Its eyes shifted between its brother and the human who had wounded it.
It roared. ROOOAAARRRR
ROOOAAARRRR The green dragon answered with another roar, filled with fury.
Daemon began to walk alongside the green dragon, passing by it and positioning himself between the two.
The entire field watched in silence.
No one knew how to react to that.
They only knew one thing: this would be remembered for the rest of their lives.
A man fighting a dragon.
A man who spat flames like a dragon.
A man who was about to defeat a legendary creature with his own hands.
They were witnessing, for the first time, the true meaning of being a Dragonborn.
"Yield!" Daemon said in Valyrian to the black dragon.
The creature roared and began to gather flames in its mouth once again.
Daemon unleashed another shout. "Fus Ro!"
The impact was not as powerful as the previous ones, but it was still enough to throw the dragon against the walls behind it, cracking them as the creature groaned in pain.
Even so, it tried to unleash flames again.
"Fus Ro!" Daemon responded quickly with another shout.
The dragon felt its back slam against the wall once more.
"Yield!" Daemon gave another warning, but the black dragon had its own pride.
"Fus Ro!" Once again, everyone felt the dragon being hurled against the wall, cracking it further, with archers on top losing their balance.
"You'd better give up... I don't want to kill you..." Daemon said in a serious tone that left no other choice but death next time.
The dragon kept staring. Its fierce glow began to fade, giving way to a look of defeat. It looked at the human before it, then at its own brother behind the human, watching him, ready to fight to defend the human — its own brother was prepared to protect the human.
Given the blood of that human, this dragon could even understand why he was doing this...
It couldn't even defeat that human. Its body was already giving in.
Slowly, the dragon began to lower its head, until it became completely submissive, letting out a small primitive growl.
Daemon nodded in satisfaction as he realized the dragon had yielded. Soon after, the creature simply collapsed to the ground, losing consciousness.
Daemon put away the axe and the shield, letting out a sigh.
He could no longer hear anything. His gaze swept to the sides, and he saw the shield lines of his army, with most of it gathered in front of the gate more than 400 meters away from where Daemon stood.
No one was paying attention to the enemy on the other side of the field anymore... Everyone was simply watching Daemon from a distance.
He couldn't help but let out a light laugh. That night was unlike anything they had ever seen.
If they had already seen him break gates with his Thu'um, raise shields against arrows, and massacre enemies with ease... that night surpassed all of it.
A man who fought a dragon and defeated it...
A man who unleashed multiple shouts, bringing it down from the sky, freezing it, wounding it, and even breaking its will.
What kind of person would do that?
But that no longer mattered.
Daemon soon turned his gaze to the army of more than one hundred and fifty thousand men. Even the people on the walls were there, staring at him... as if they had seen a god.
His attention returned to the green dragon.
He approached, while the creature looked at him with curiosity — and even happiness.
Daemon could feel it.
They had a connection.
He had achieved it involuntarily. When he felt the dragon approaching King's Landing, he was already inside its mind. It had been a shock, but since he already had experience entering Winter's mind, he knew exactly what was happening.
He was connected to a dragon.
His hands rose, and he touched the green dragon's snout.
"A dragon of ice... and another of fire. Doesn't sound bad," he said calmly.
If he had once been used to killing dragons, why wouldn't he have two as companions now, in this world?
He turned his attention back. There were still several flames from the last attack, from the clash of fire between him and the dragon.
"Fo!" It was the first word of the Ice Breath, Fo Krah Diin. He spoke only one word, and a cold front advanced.
The flames began to go out, one after another, until they disappeared completely around the unconscious black dragon.
"My lord..."
Soon, the sound of horses broke the silence.
Daemon turned his attention to a man from the army, a captain, who approached carefully. The green dragon immediately looked ready to growl, but Daemon's hand touched its snout.
"No," he said in High Valyrian.
The dragon calmed down, and its gaze turned to the man, who was clearly frightened.
Daemon could see a glimmer of admiration and fear.
Well, it wouldn't be the first that night.
In any case, he sighed as he realized the man was unable to say anything. Their king looked like anything but human now.
"Tell the army to remain alert to the enemy tonight. The first battle has already been won. We have already brought down all of the enemy's dragons. Now we have three dragons to fight at our side, while Aegon Blackfyre has none left," he said, with great satisfaction.
