Chapter 254 – The Bird of Ice and Death.

Chapter 254 – The Bird of Ice and Death.

[Chapter Size: 2600 Words.]

Third Person POV.

Sea.

...

...

At the same time that Daemon dominated the black dragon and dealt with the green dragon, Winter, the female ice dragon, was now flying over the sea, at that exact moment, as she spotted the fleet coming from the southern sea.

Her red eyes observed each of the ships. There were about 100 vessels.

She continued advancing over the ships. Among the sailors, already watching the calm sea, no one seemed to notice the giant white bird in the sky, distant enough not to draw attention.

Winter observed, studied, and searched for the presence of her rider within her mind, she called for him, just as she had been instructed to do when she reached the enemy fleet. She could simply descend and start unleashing icy flames, but perhaps that was not the best strategy, her rider knew how to act better.

Then her rider responded. He felt her presence, lightly nudging her mind, merely observing through her eyes after her warning. He was quickly studying the ships and asked her to wait a little.

He soon disappeared, but would return shortly. She knew he was going to one of those red-leafed trees to sit and then fully focus his mind so they could fight together, as he always did.

She remained there for about five minutes, flying over the fleet, until finally her rider began to enter her mind. The two of them were sharing her body.

She felt that he was analyzing the ships more than before, she moved behind the ships, turning toward them, and then began to tilt downward as her body entered free fall. Pulling her wings back, she dived headfirst.

The night wind did not bother her. She quickly approached the ships at high speed. When she finally got close, she released her announcement.

It was time to announce her presence and Winter roared like thunder, on a night with no storm clouds in the sky.

Down below, she saw the men immediately rush to the deck holding lanterns and searching for the source of the frightening sound, while running from all sides across the deck. She could feel all the ships stirring, pointing at her as she continued descending.

Then, her wings opened. She made a sharp turn and approached from behind the first ships, positioning herself directly along the center line of the fleet, where she would cause even more impact in the next attack.

Quickly, her body spun at high speed, and she reached the first ships, opening her mouth and unleashing her white flames against the vessels. Men screamed in terror before being silenced by the ice burning in white flames.

Her rider did not stop her. He wanted her to keep unleashing flames as she advanced through the center of the fleet, striking more and more ships. At least more than a dozen had already been hit, freezing instantly.

Leaving a trail of white flames between the sea and the struck ships.

She then tilted her body upward and began to climb, while she could still hear the men screaming behind her, trying to save their ships, which were already beginning to crack and split with the ice. Some simply fell apart like toys.

Her first impulse was to turn around and attack again, but her rider instructed her not to act that way.

She did not understand why not massacre them all at once.

Instead, he asked her to return to the sea where the fleet was heading, that she should first set traps along the fleet's path and begin freezing the waters themselves and changing the air in the area.

Winter began to understand her rider's intentions. It was not the first time he had done that. He used the flames to freeze anything, but mainly the air. No one who flew through it would be able to survive, besides herself and her rider, who also possessed resistance to the cold.

All the others could not survive.

She had already seen this in the northern lands, when she and her rider surrounded a camp with icy flames, sparing only two people and leaving all the others to die without any chance, frozen from the inside.

Her rider had already explained that her flames were deadly, but there was an effect in them that could become an even more dangerous weapon than the white fire itself... that the consequence of her ice was to make the air unfit to breathe for any other living being.

The frozen air far below zero killed from the inside out, freezing the lungs. It was a death so painful that, even before the air reached the lungs, the sensation was already like knives cutting through the throat from within.

She moved away from the fleet and began to unleash flames into the middle of the sea.

The fleet was in despair.

Tyrek, and only Tyrek, was a lieutenant under Harry Strickland in the Golden Company and the current commander who was in control of the fleet in place of Harry, who had decided to command the elephants by land.

He was a day away from King's Landing, finally waiting to attack the city, and he was eating when the monstrous roar, which clearly was not thunder, made him jump from his seat as the ship itself seemed to tremble.

His men began to shout, and some ran to him. Tyrek immediately went out to the deck to see his men pointing upward.

When his eyes saw the white mass falling from the sky, the dragon was already approaching, opening its wings before passing over the central ships, unleashing white flames that bathed that entire area, leaving a straight line of light across the sea.

And those flames did not burn. They froze.

The men who were struck simply succumbed. There were no screams as there would be with a fire dragon causing a blaze. They just died in silence.

That made Tyrek shiver.

A dozen ships had already been destroyed. Most of the fleet still remained, but that shook him.

"How can this be happening?" he murmured. "Why is his dragon here?"

Tyrek watched the dragon rising again, it could be preparing to advance once more.

The fear of a dragon attack had never disappeared since he took command of the fleet. He had already reported this to Commander Harry about it, saying that they could do nothing if they were attacked on the open sea. Harry Strickland, however, had said that this likely would not happen with Aegon still having his 2 dragons, and when the enemy learned of the fleet advancing toward King's Landing, Aegon's army would already be at the city walls and two dragons available to strike if the enemy sent the white dragon, they would then be safe.

But reality was different. His ships were being destroyed.

Burned in a different way... Frozen. They began to sink. The ice weighed down on the structures, and cracks appeared everywhere. Some ships simply split apart into pieces.

"By the gods..." Tyrek murmured.

His eyes turned forward. He could see columns of white flames being launched against the sea, it did not return in an attack.

"What is the dragon doing?" someone said, with Tyrek walking toward the bow, watching.

A scream echoed from the ships closer to the center.

Tyrek looked in the direction of the sound and saw a man screaming, clutching his own throat.

"His throat is burning!" one of the men shouted.

Tyrek began to observe the pattern. More and more men began to feel something in their throats, falling to the deck on those ships, writhing in great pain.

"What is happening?" Tyrek wondered, clearly not understanding.

Several men on the nearby ships began to shout, complaining that they were being affected when breathing.

Is it... the ice?

A chill ran through Tyrek's body as he looked at the ships still in flames.

Unlike fire, which caused heat and burns, the ice penetrated the air. It made the air deadly, spreading in all directions as the cold front expanded from the flames.

It was not an explosive and hot attack.

It was silent and invisible.

"Move the ships away from the center! Move the ships away from the flames!" Tyrek shouted immediately as he realized the fleet was in danger by staying too close together.

His men began to maneuver the ships in a hurry, frightened, trying to move as far away as possible, while more and more people were affected. Some simply fell dead on the decks, on the ships closest to the center of the fleet.

"My lord..." one of the men began to say, but was soon affected.

He fell to his knees, trying to breathe. His throat seemed to twist, as if a thousand knives were cutting its inside. When the air reached his lungs, the pain was even worse, sharp and unbearable. His body was not prepared for such a brutal drop in temperature and he suffered asphyxiation and convulsions.

"Cover your noses! Do not breathe the air directly!" Tyrek shouted as he realized it, watching the man suffer pure agony.

But it was already too late.

They could not completely escape the cold front.

Men were being affected on all sides. There were about 8,000 men there, with each ship carrying approximately 100 soldiers, ready to sack King's Landing when the time came.

What no one imagined was the horrible death they would face on their way to King's Landing.

Many screamed in agony before collapsing, motionless. Others simply fell without even being able to react.

Tyrek's crew began placing cloths over their noses and mouths, trying to filter the air.

He searched for the dragon and managed to see columns of white flames spreading across the sea ahead.

"What is this...? What is that bastard doing...?" Tyrek murmured, feeling a chill.

Then he realized in the next moment, his eyes widening. "He's trying to kill us through the air itself!"

"Prepare the bows! If the dragon returns, aim for the eyes!" Tyrek gave another order.

His men prepared themselves, even trembling from the cold that was already beginning to affect them. They watched the sea, trying to locate any sign of the creature.

The fleet was already completely exposed.

And that opened a gap for Winter to attack again.

When they saw the dragon once more, it was already roaring, approaching three more ships at one of the corners of the fleet after they had split into several groups.

In an instant, she dived and struck them, freezing them.

Soon after, she rose again into the skies, while the men tried not to lose sight of her position.

Once again she descended.

Arrows were fired, but they did not seem to have any effect. They simply struck against the flames and were destroyed, while the white fire enveloped both the arrows and the ships themselves in ice.

With the ships being forced to move away from each other, they were out of proper range for the archers, becoming easy targets for the dragon. And they also could not remain together, since the ice spread rapidly.

Tyrek began shouting at his men, who prepared the bows, but were unable to shoot with the attacked ships being so far away and out of range, while the dragon went back and forth, massacring them two by two, three by three ships.

And even though all the ships were separated from one another, they were still affected by the air. Some men did not have enough cloths to protect themselves. Others realized it was useless when they were too close to the white flames created in the sea or on the newly destroyed ships.

And then they began to fall dead.

Tyrek kept shouting until his voice simply failed.

He stopped.

He only watched.

His men were already looking at him with empty eyes. Some were already fallen, dead, unable to withstand the air. As they advanced, white flames and blocks of ice were spread across the entire sea began to affect them as well...

Not even hiding helped.

The dragon had created a field of death.

He saw his companions falling one by one. Some still tried to raise their bows, but could never fire. Others simply dropped their weapons, going to hide or just waiting for death.

And so it continued for a while.

They were 100 ships.

Now, not even half remained.

And if there were still a dozen intact, it would already be a lot.

Tyrek simply sat in a corner of the deck like a weeping boy. "How can this happen...?" he murmured. He did not want to die.

"How can we be wiped out like this... by just one dragon...?"

Dragons were powerful, yes. They inspired fear.

But he had never heard of a dragon exterminating an entire fleet in that way.

He raised his gaze. One of his men was staring at him. His throat contracted on its own. He raised a hand toward the captain, agonizing before falling dead.

Tyrek looked at the body.

And laughed. First, a low laugh. Then, louder.

"Haha... HAHAHAHAHA!" He was like a madman.

Running was useless.

Hiding was also useless.

The cold front reached them regardless.

Those who tried to jump into the sea met the same fate. The water was as cold as the air, filled with blocks of ice scattered everywhere.

Tyrek noticed the silence and saw all his men fallen dead on the deck... some still holding their bows.

Perhaps he was the only one alive.

A roar caught his attention.

He looked back.

The dragon was coming directly toward his ship.

He did not react.

He only felt the air entering his throat, tearing his insides and striking his lungs like blades piercing his chest.

The pain was indescribable. And he was already facing death.

The dragon approached, its mouth engulfed in flames.

In an instant, it passed over the ship.

And everything was consumed.

That was not the last ship Winter attacked.

She continued advancing, destroying two or three more. Most of the deaths did not come directly from the flames, but from the frozen air. With each dive, she could only hit a few ships, but she left behind blocks of ice that contaminated the entire area.

It was a strategic attack. She surrounded the fleet in a circular pattern, eliminating any escape route.

Little by little, everyone began to die. In the end, no one survived.

Winter beat her wings and returned to King's Landing, somewhat tired after expelling so many flames that night.

From where he was, at the heart tree of the Red Keep, Daemon could not say he was not satisfied with his ice dragon.

Its power was impressive, especially its flames.

They were strong enough to shatter stone, making entire structures fall apart like a puzzle. But the most frightening thing was not that.

It was what they did to the environment. They turned everything into a hostile territory, a place where breathing itself led to death.

That could be even more terrifying than any other dragon.

"Daemon... Daemon..." a voice called him.

He looked at Bran's body, which was beginning to speak.

"Euron Greyjoy... going... Wall... Dragon!" Bran's raven said.

Daemon narrowed his eyes. So that bastard had finally decided to show himself.

He was taking advantage of Daemon Blackfyre's war to advance toward the Wall, believing that Daemon would be trapped there, unable to react.

Daemon frowned. He stood up immediately.
