Chapter 251 – Meeting Under a Flag of Peace 02.
[Chapter Size: 3100 Words.]
Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
"What did you say, bastard?" Jon Connington was the first to roar upon hearing Daemon call Aegon Blackfyre.
"Calm down. No need to be so hysterical, Blackfyre's little bitch, otherwise I'll start thinking you're in love with the boy. What is he? Half your age? I know you were somewhat fanatical about my father, and I know he would have been far too busy with my mother to be a sword swallower. But don't interrupt our little conversation here with the hysterical screams of a spoiled teenager..."
Daemon spoke calmly in front of everyone, even using the power of his voice to make them all stop and listen without interrupting him. Immediately, the atmosphere grew tense.
"You..." Jon Connington began to stammer, his face turning completely red.
"Calm yourself, Lord Connington. Can't you see he is merely provoking you?" Varys said in a calm tone.
Daemon looked at him with a smile.
"Ah, Varys. Lord Varys." Daemon began savoring the name as the eunuch stared at him. "And to think that behind that friendly face there hides not only a man who recruits children, tearing out their tongues and teaching them to write to be his spies, but also other quite interesting things... which I recently discovered... And..." He paused.
"To begin with, for someone who was mutilated by a sorcerer and lost... well, you know. For someone who had his genitals torn off in a ritual, you seem quite willing to mutilate other children. A contradiction, I would say." He spoke calmly.
"Perhaps it may seem harsh to those who see it from the outside, but you can be certain of one thing: the children I have employed live far better than they would have if I had not given them an opportunity. Without being my little birds..." Varys replied to Daemon, although he was surprised that he knew about his situation, but that was also somewhat public, after all the eunuch had to speak about his origins from time to time.
"You say that, but I only found children wearing rags hiding around listening to the conversations you wanted, especially when I first came here to King's Landing. I cannot say that the benefit of having their tongues torn out by you, and the chances of them being discovered and killed, seems worth the life you give them..."
"Well, perhaps the children have a bit of difficulty, but their families live much better, I assure you," he said.
'But what about the children who came from orphanages?' The question lingered in the air.
In any case, Daemon still stared at him. "I know your story very well. Your sister... what was her name again...?" He paused.
"Marelys." He said with a smile.
Seeing the faces of both Varys and Aegon with surprised looks, Daemon continued.
"You were born near Myr. Your mother had a common job in a nearby city, hoping to save some money to leave that place. Your sister and you grew up well in the early years. Your sister always told stories about you continuing the legacy..."
As Daemon spoke, Varys seemed somewhat disturbed. Even his friendly face seemed to crack. He appeared cautious and even somewhat afraid.
"Unfortunately, the path your mother wished for you was lost the moment you were attacked in the city and kidnapped by Dothrakis... Your sister was taken one way, your mother was killed, and you were sold as well. In the end of that chaos, a sorcerer bought you and used you for a ritual. After that, being a eunuch, you could never achieve the ambition that your mother, the very daughter of Maelys the Monstrous, placed in the mind of her only son, isn't that right, Varys Blackfyre?" Daemon said.
Many there already knew this, but others did not. Some even among Aegon's group raised their eyebrows. Arianne, Garlan, Mace, and Randyll made a face while looking at Varys.
"Your imagination is quite large, Daemon. We know that. This attempt to sow discord among us, old tricks like that..." Varys replied more calmly now, returning to the friendly tone from before.
"You know that I know many things, don't you? And it wasn't I who obtained this information. I had help from someone. But you know that this is true, just as much as what I have already said." Daemon spoke calmly.
"Just like this Blackfyre here is being cuckolded lately..." Daemon added, looking directly at Aegon, who clenched his teeth.
"Lies, stop insulting me, bastard!" Aegon snarled.
Daemon simply smiled. "Sorry if that affected you so much, but you already know it's true," he insisted.
"It's a lie!" Aegon said through clenched teeth, but he did not sound very convincing.
Garlan immediately widened his eyes. Why was Daemon calling Aegon a cuckold? And why did the king seem so disturbed? He could not help but think of Margaery, in Storm's End. What was happening there? He did not understand.
"Cuckold? You are calling the king a cuckold?!" Mace Tyrell could not hold back and shouted. "You are speaking about my daughter's damned honor, you wretched bastard!" Mace shouted with all the rage he could gather. His face was red like a pepper.
"Do not let yourselves be provoked. This man is subtle in that art. His history says much about it. You should have already expected something like this." Varys said.
Someone began laughing behind Daemon. "HAHAHAHA! Just look at these southerners, they're all soft nobles!" Tormund shouted.
"Well, enough talk. Let's speak of negotiation, Blackfyre." Daemon cut in, trying to calm the nerves between the groups.
He could see Varys studying everything the entire time. Jon Connington frowned. Mace was still red with rage, almost like a pepper. Garlan also seemed to have a glimmer of anger toward Daemon, although there was also concern in his gaze. Arianne seemed frustrated. To her, Aegon was not opposing properly, while Daemon himself was leading the provocations and doing very well.
Obviously, as Dragonborn, when he began to speak no one could interrupt him due to the power of his voice. So it was very easy to deal with fools. He did this many times when he was on one side of the war in Skyrim, provoking the enemy general and leaving him frustrated to the point of starting to make mistakes because of the hatred he felt inside every time they met to negotiate.
Now the girl seemed disappointed with her king. Daemon noticed, but it did not matter. Jon Connington was also furious, but he did not want to give Daemon more reason to call him a spoiled teenage girl again.
"Forget these lies from this bastard. He is nothing compared to you, Aegon. Playing dirty is always their nature." Jon Connington seemed to calm down a little as he gave his verdict.
"Anyway, shall we begin?" Daemon turned his gaze to the herald.
"Hm!?" Lord Blackwood saw the king raise an eyebrow at him.
Immediately, the herald took a deep breath. They had to begin with the introductions.
"You are in the presence of Daemon Targaryen, legitimate son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Targaryen, of House Stark. The last living son and heir to the Iron Throne, also conquered by him. King of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, Dragonlord of the first ice dragon in the history of the Targaryens and also a reborn hero with the soul of a dragon, the chosen one known as the Dragonborn, the one who defeated Alduin, the World-Eater, and saved another world." He finished.
He could mention several other titles, such as King of the Wildlings, the one who conquered the North, and other grand names, but Daemon did not like many titles, only the basics. They took his best title from this world and the other. It would be better to be recognized by those, even if people looked with some skepticism at the title of Dragonborn, but it was still quite intimidating.
Everyone looked at each other before Aegon's herald stepped forward.
"You stand before Aegon Targaryen, firstborn son of Prince Rhaegar with Elia of House Martell, the true heir to the Iron Throne, king of the Seven Kingdoms, father of dragons, conqueror of kingdoms, and the fastest sword in the world. Aegon the Conqueror reborn!" He finished.
Everyone remained silent, looking at one another.
"So... Aegon the Conqueror reborn, who even lost a dragon to a Greyjoy. Is there anything more humiliating?" Daemon mocked.
"Silence! I still have two dragons, bastard!" he roared at Daemon with fury.
The dragon lost to Euron was something that hurt Aegon's heart, but Daemon began to laugh in response.
"Haha... Then tell me, Conqueror reborn: you have two dragons, but can you ride either of them? I think not." He mocked.
"You have conquered nothing so far. All you have done are alliances. Storm's End was easy when Robert's own bastard gave you the castle, and you still stabbed him in the back, denying him glory and going against your own word. No wonder he is now eating your wife."
"Do not speak of Margaery like that!" Mace shouted, beginning to advance.
But his son immediately stopped him. "Stop, father! He has ulterior motives. He is lying about Margaery!"
"He is destroying Margaery's honor..." Mace insisted with hatred.
"The little pig seems to want to be brave!" Tormund began mocking from behind, laughing.
Daemon's group was simply silent, listening. Lord Stark did not think that was something with much honor, but he said nothing. Tully and Stannis also seemed to have serious expressions. They did not appear displeased at Daemon's provocations toward the enemy, but they also did not show happiness, unlike Mance and Tormund, who did not stop displaying smiles every time Daemon began speaking badly about the other group.
"What did you say?" Mace heard Tormund and began shouting at him.
"I called you a little pig! Don't you know what that is? I thought southerners knew what that was."
"I know what it is, but I am a lord of the Reach! No one insults me like this!" he shouted.
Lord Tarly was looking at Mace with a frown, not liking how things were going.
"My lord, you should not give importance to what a bastard says, much less to a wildling from beyond the Wall!"
Daemon did not comment on what Tarly said. He only looked calmly at Aegon, who was furious. Jon Connington was also about to shout, but he held himself back so as not to show loss of control. His allies were no longer enjoying that meeting very much.
"You are a bastard! How dare you say things about us?" Aegon said.
"Well, it is ironic coming from you. I saw some rumors of you spreading information about me among the common folk and the soldiers, calling me Daemon Blackfyre. A Blackfyre nicknaming the other Targaryen to gain political favor and public opinion... it is kind of ironic, isn't it?" Daemon mocked.
They had been spreading news that he was Daemon Blackfyre, a bastard born to cause destruction. And it was truly working among the people of the Stormlands. It was not as if every Targaryen bastard received the name Blackfyre, but the name Daemon Blackfyre still held a certain power and fear among the people.
"Well, anyway, let's get to the boring matters. You will say that I should surrender, that you are the heir to the throne and that blah-blah-blah. Did you know that we basically have the same number of soldiers? I even have a bit more, although a few tens of thousands will not make much difference with an army of our size."
"Give up the city. Give up the throne. We do not need to kill so many men," Harry of the Golden Company finally began to speak this time.
Daemon looked at Aegon, raising an eyebrow. The boy seemed firmer now, gaining a new posture.
"Harry speaks the truth. We do not need to create a war of this size. Give up the city, abdicate the throne, and declare what you are: the third son and the son of lust... while I, Aegon, have a greater right to the throne. I will spare you and send you to the Wall."
Daemon simply listened to that in silence. And he let a smile slip out. No one said anything, knowing he did that because he was enjoying the enemy's face.
"Ah, of course. There are so many problems with what you're saying, Aegon Blackfyre. But I thought I would at least have a place in this family you are trying to create..." Daemon continued insisting on calling him that.
"But to begin with, this is not a lost fight for us as you are making it out to be. Our armies are the same size, we have a dragon as well. You have conquered nothing. Why would I simply give you the throne?"
Daemon laughed. He found that quite amusing and looked for Aegon's answer.
"Look, I have two dragons and I don't see any scorpions on the city's walls. Our spies also said you did nothing to try to stop an aerial attack. Unlike us, who prepared to attack your dragon. We have men at sea, while you have no ships. You may even have more men on land, but you are surrounded, and it will be a mistake to try to face us in the open field." He began.
"Well, that is just nonsense from your mouth. You do not even control your dragons properly. You will not even be able to ride them. Your dragon fell to a Greyjoy. You are a disgrace to any Targaryen. In any case, there will be no negotiation." Daemon cut him off immediately.
"We are about to kill each other. You can say you have two dragons, but who said they guarantee you victory? Winter is more powerful than you might think. Anyway, if that is all you have to say, we should simply prepare for war." Daemon said in a calm tone, but also speaking seriously.
"So you will lead all these men to their deaths?" Varys said in a tone of pity.
"Then surrender. You have conquered nothing, as I said before. It is easier for you to surrender. Lady Arianne Martell, withdraw your army. Lord Mace Tyrell, withdraw your army. Annul the marriage with Margaery. Bring me my head in exchange for the head of Aegon Blackfyre. I cannot allow this line to continue."
The enemy group was shocked to hear this.
"You must be joking," they said.
Daemon shrugged. He knew it would not work, but... "A bit hypocritical on your part, isn't it? You are the one who will let all these men die?" Daemon mocked Varys before turning back to Aegon.
"If you wish, we can have a duel. You against me, in front of both armies. We do not need to create the greatest slaughter Westeros has ever seen in a battle."
"You think I am a fool? Everyone speaks of your abilities. You are a sorcerer who cheats."
"If you believe that, fine. But remember: we have hostages. If you do not return to your homes by the end of this day, I intend to execute them." Daemon said, leaving Arianne, Mace, and Garlan stunned.
"You cannot be serious." Arianne shouted.
But Daemon merely shrugged.
"I am being quite serious. After all, as beautiful as the words of this Blackfyre may be, they would never leave me alive. And they have already tried to kill my wife in Winterfell, sending mercenaries. I do not intend to forgive anyone. No one associated with the Blackfyre for using my brother's name and the bastard who tried to kill my son in my wife's womb."
Daemon turned his gaze back to him.
"And you, Blackfyre, I will make sure you have a slow death. And I should thank you: soon I will have that sword you carry at your waist and your two dragons. You have done a good service for House Targaryen. But you will die by my hands..." Daemon said.
Many frowned, even seeing some reaching for their weapons. "Ah, I would not do that if I were you. After all, the moment you drop the banner of peace, you are quite far from your guards and protections. I could really make you go flying before you have a horrible death the moment someone draws a sword. Fire, ice, or you can leave with an impact of force, I will let you choose... I am here to provoke each other before the battle. Do not think I cannot kill all of you." Daemon provoked.
Even Jon Connington and some others who had been reaching for their weapons began to step back slowly.
"Well, if you do not believe me, let me give you a gift."
Daemon finally opened the bag that was attached to his horse, something that had a round shape. He slowly pulled it out, revealing a severed head.
"AHH!" Arianne immediately screamed upon seeing Daemon show the severed head of Oberyn Martell, with the eyes cut out.
Aegon frowned, as did everyone else. They already knew about Oberyn's escape from the camp the night before, but they could do nothing about it, since he had left alone. What they did not expect was to see the Prince of Dorne's head there so easily.
Daemon simply threw the head onto the ground, and it rolled to the horses' feet.
He looked at his own group, who also seemed stunned. No one knew that Daemon had killed Oberyn Martell the night before, only Val, who had seen him bringing the head to the room before storing it away.
"Well, I suppose we have nothing more to do here. Let's leave and prepare for battle."
With those words, he pulled the horse's reins and began to move away. His men soon started following him as well, leaving the Blackfyre group staring at the severed head.
Arianne was the only one who approached, crying, confirming her worst fears since she had seen that bag beside Daemon's horse. She picked up the head and began to cry even more.
Daemon did not even care if Oberyn had any importance. From the way he treated Prince Oberyn, it seemed he did not care about the fury of Dorne. He did not care about House Martell either, appearing as if he truly intended to destroy it.
