Chapter 82: Late Night Wolf Shadow
Chapter 82: Late Night Wolf Shadow
Serving as the Captain of the First Squad of the California Special Affairs Division under the Federal Secret Service was Austin Nash's current position, and it marked his first promotion in five years.
Of course, he would rather not have received such a promotion.
His previous days might have offered meager pay, tedious chores, and endless boredom, but at least he did not have to put his life on the line every single day!
Things were completely different now. He had obtained the career advancement and increased authority he had always dreamed of, but in exchange, the dangers he faced had multiplied exponentially.
Take their current investigation, for example. Austin stood before Gao, reporting his findings:
"Sir, we found the house where the woman named Mona lived!"
"According to our detailed investigation, her child died at the hands of the Fallen Bishop, Ken Burke. That man shattered her family, and in her desperation, she sought out a special Sacrifice ritual!"
"A special ritual dedicated to Lucifer! By continuously feeding the ritual with her own blood for ten years, she successfully summoned that Archdemon!"
Austin rubbed his temples, clearly nursing a headache over the troublesome situation. "But just as we were about to document the scene, a fully armed squad of Mercenaries arrived and forced us back... By the time we returned, the ritual site, the pentagram array, and all the sacrificial offerings had been stripped away! They even took Mona's corpse!"
Hearing this, Gao gave a slight nod. "I understand. It is likely the work of a prominent local family... or perhaps our esteemed Governor's own doing... Our operations here are constrained at every turn!"At those words, Austin suddenly looked up. "Are you saying..."
"Yes, I received the transfer orders. Pack your things; it is time for us to head back!" Gao said with a beaming smile. "The President has specially authorized our return to officially join the Federal Special Affairs Bureau! We no longer have to stay here and be at the mercy of that old fool's whims!"
Lately, their so-called California Special Affairs Division had been running around like a swarm of headless flies.
They could never get their hands on the latest intelligence, and even when they did, various accidents would promptly cut them out of the loop.
If they tried to question Nuland, her only response would be: "I am merely a Governor. I cannot dictate everything that happens in this region. You are the Federation's people, are you not?"
Naturally, Gao, who was well-versed in political double-speak, understood the underlying message. She was effectively saying: "If I give you face, this is federal land. If I do not, this is the sovereign nation of California!"
Recently, Nuland had even used that Charlatan named Jaron as a bargaining chip, trading him to the Apache Tribe in San Diego in exchange for a temporary period of peace!
And the price for that peace, of course, was paid by so-called Federation members like them.
Under these circumstances, having been entirely marginalized and stripped of operational capacity, Gao finally secured the opportunity to return to New York alongside the National Guard. This also signaled that the Two-Party Struggle, which had primarily manifested as public protests, had temporarily drawn to a close.
Of course, anyone with a discerning eye knew that the curtain falling did not mean the conflict was over; rather, it heralded the beginning of a brand-new struggle.
"Boss, what will we do once we get back? We cannot possibly just go back to catching ghosts and stuff, right?" Austin asked.
Gao waved his hand dismissively. "It will not come to that. Since we are heading back to New York, we should at least get to handle some simple tasks and catch our breath, right? The New York City Police Department and the National Guard are fully functional over there. No matter how bad things get, it will not fall on our shoulders!"
"True!" Austin nodded slowly. Who could possibly be so unlucky so many times in a row? Impossible. It was absolutely impossible!
......
"Captain Austin, I am Detective Chris from the New York City Police Department. I will be assisting you with the investigation of this incident!"
Chris greeted the agent before him with a cheerful smile. He knew the man hailed from the Federal Special Affairs Bureau, a specialized agency established under the orders of the Great Leader, Golden Hair, to handle matters potentially linked to Supernatural events, much like their current assignment.
However, both Chris and Austin knew deep down that this would most likely end up as yet another Ineffective Police Dispatch.
Following that massive suspected Supernatural incident, the Federation had routinely locked down all information. The involved prisoners and guards had been transferred to other facilities, but there was one thing they could not hide—Jeff's live stream!
Because of that broadcast, countless internet surfers had caught wind of the news.
Even though Golden Hair had issued strict orders to black out all social media platforms—extending the ban all the way to a certain black-and-yellow video site and the dark web—many people still managed to smuggle the evidence over to the Chinese Internet, where fierce discussions continued!
Left with no other option, Golden Hair had been forced to step forward and publicly acknowledge the incident. His main objective was to declare, "While it was indeed dangerous, the crisis has been averted under my brilliant leadership," a move that successfully salvaged his previously crumbling reputation.
With the government's official acknowledgment, a whole new trend swept through the city and the entire nation. Gods, Ghosts, and Demons became the hottest topics of conversation in New York. This newfound obsession also emboldened numerous restless Cultists, prompting them to start causing trouble!
One day, they would claim responsibility for a Demon's descent; the next, they would preach that an Angel had descended to bring about the apocalypse. By the third day, they were personally fabricating so-called Divine Miracles, all for the sake of extorting wealth from their foolish believers!
This utterly chaotic situation forced the newly formed Special Affairs Processing Department and the New York police to dispatch officers at an intense rate, giving them a bitter taste of the sheer joy of working twenty-four seven.
Austin accepted the file Chris handed him and asked casually, "So, which cult, gang, or whatever group is it this time? Are they holding a Sacrifice ritual or a prayer session?"
"I have no idea. The report we received claimed that wolf fur was found in a wealthy neighborhood in Queens! I heard someone crying about a Werewolf," Chris said, shrugging. "It just sounds like another group of idiots playing the demon descent trick!"
Austin instantly understood. "Ah... The rich folks do not want these petty tricks disrupting their peaceful lives, so they called us in? The Advent of the Supernatural is already upon us, yet we are still acting as bodyguards for the wealthy?"
Chris felt that Austin's words bordered on dangerous territory and had no intention of continuing the conversation. He simply waved his hand, leading the group into the sprawling estate of luxurious villas.
Even in Queens, which was considered one of New York's more turbulent boroughs, this neighborhood boasted pristine landscaping, flawless roads, and impeccable security. Such was the stark contrast between a wealthy district and the Slums.
However, not long after their team entered the community, a terrifying scream pierced their eardrums. "Ahhh!"
It was the horrified shriek of a woman. A chill ran down their spines. The two men exchanged a sharp glance and immediately broke into a sprint!
Even though Austin had just been complaining about the rich, they both knew all too well that if a serious incident occurred in a wealthy neighborhood like this, they would be in massive trouble!
But halfway down the path, Austin suddenly spotted something glowing faintly blue in the shadows by the side of the road. 'Why is there a light here?' he thought, instinctively raising his flashlight to illuminate the spot.
To his horror, the beam of light revealed a furry Monster!
The creature possessed enormous blue eyes the size of lanterns, pitch-black fur, and razor-sharp claws that seemed to gleam in the light. Most importantly, it had the head of a wolf!
"What the f—?!" Austin cried out, hurriedly drawing his Pistol, preparing to fire.
Seeing him draw his weapon, the monster did not hesitate for a second. With a swift twist of its body, it vaulted over a wall over six feet high and vanished into the night.
"Bang!" Austin fired a shot at the top of the wall anyway, causing the officers running ahead of him to whip their heads around in alarm!
"What happened?!" Chris demanded urgently.
"I... I just saw a monster with a humanoid body and a wolf's head!" Austin gasped, panting heavily. "I hope to God I was just seeing things..."
They dared not delay any further. Leaving two police officers behind to guard the spot, the rest of the team continued their sprint toward the target location!
......
Watching their retreating backs from afar, Alvin looked somewhat puzzled. "Crown, wouldn't it be easier for us to gather Wish Power if we directly shaped mythological history or fabricated more Secrets? Couldn't we just leave this trivial Werewolf matter for them to develop on their own?"
"If we had no other plans, doing this would certainly seem redundant. But these Werewolves will also serve as a crucial component of history!" Bai Yang said with a cheerful chuckle.
"You mean..." Alvin turned to look at the seemingly ordinary villa, his face filled with astonishment. "This villa is also part of the plan? But we haven't even done anything yet!"
"Wouldn't it be remarkably quick to just make something up?" Bai Yang replied with a smile. "You must understand, the history of this world does not depend on what they already know, but rather on what we choose to give them!"
"Dead men tell no tales, but dead men are far more effective at proving the existence of certain things!"
"What we did previously was shape the mythological pantheon. Now, our goal is to weave the phantoms of history into that very real mythological framework!"
"Werewolves are Dark Creatures, and Demons naturally fall into the same category. If we do not intervene, they will be viewed as nothing more than mindless Monsters! Mere Monsters cannot form the foundation of history, but Monsters with a distinct origin can turn history itself into our ultimate proof!"
Taking a single step forward, Bai Yang instantly bypassed the approaching officers, arriving inside the villa where the scream had originated long before they did.
Gazing at the corpses strewn across the floor, he nodded in satisfaction. Tyne had acted with absolute ruthlessness. When he decided to kill, he executed the deed without a shred of hesitation.
There was not a single living soul left in the villa. Every member of this family had perished right here.
Even in death, they likely had no idea that the reason their entire bloodline had been wiped out was simply because, years ago, their family had stolen a certain black man's opportunity to advance his education.
"The McDowell Family? Ha, what a coincidence!" Bai Yang murmured with an approving nod.
