Chapter 562: I Don’t Know You Well
"Aunt Hutchinson, what a coincidence, meeting you here. We must be fated to meet!"
Rachel Woodward was the first to greet Elaine, as she often saw Master Elaine and Jasper Sinclair interacting and wanted to get closer.
Obviously, Elaine wasn’t there for her.
"Who might you be?"
The scene instantly turned awkward.
Elaine gently pressed the back of Nora Northwood’s hand, a little gesture just between them.
Nora felt indignant and raised her voice to introduce the people opposite: "Aunt Hutchinson, this is Mrs. Woodward and the youngest daughter of the Woodward Family, who’s also been in the fragrance business."
"Unfamiliar, but pleased to meet you."
Elaine’s arrogance was deeply ingrained, and with her status being ten times higher than the Woodward Family, she sensed something amiss and her attitude was far from friendly.
Nora added, "I accidentally soiled Mrs. Woodward’s dress, and she’s mentioned it’s quite expensive, perhaps more than I can afford to cover. I might need to borrow some money from you."
It was rare for her to speak in such a sarcastic tone, but Elaine appeared to appreciate it.
Even Rachel, who had interacted with her many times, had never seen her like this, leaving her momentarily stunned.
Mrs. Woodward wasn’t aware of Elaine’s stature in the fragrance industry, but Rachel knew very well, and she rushed to make amends after Nora’s sarcastic undertone.
"Miss Northwood, I was just joking with you earlier! It’s just a dress; we can always get a new one!"
Rachel tried to brush it off lightly.
There’s a saying: don’t fear a godlike opponent, but a teammate like a pig.
Mrs. Woodward was precisely that.
"How can we not compensate? This dress can’t be bought again!"
Rachel was grinding her teeth in frustration.
The Woodward Family seldom let Mrs. Woodward appear in public, for this very reason, given her humble roots and lack of manners.
Fortunately, Rachel had been given a good education from a young age and was groomed into a high-society lady at great expense.
Elaine took Nora’s side, stepping up for her, "Miss Woodward has a point, it’s just a dress!"
At this point, she paused.
Just as Rachel was happily about to continue the conversation, Elaine changed her tune, "But it’s just a niche brand worth thousands, not worth having our Nora losing her manners in public! Should I have Eleanor Yates’s studio make another one or transfer the compensation?"
When she said "manners," she emphasized the pronunciation as if making a veiled insinuation.
This time, it was Mrs. Woodward’s turn to clench her fists, looking bewildered.
"You know this brand’s designer?"
Mrs. Woodward caught Eleanor Yates’s name; she had spent over a million on this brand’s membership card without ever meeting the designer.
Unexpectedly, any random person on the street dared to call out her name, leaving her feeling very unsettled.
"That’s not important. Let’s first discuss how you would like to handle the compensation."
"Aunt Hutchinson..." Rachel tried to ease the awkwardness, but she was immediately interrupted halfway through her sentence.
"I’m not familiar with you; please call me Master Elaine."
Nora hid behind her, stifling a laugh. So this is what it feels like to have mom back you up!
It was a sensation she had never experienced, not even with Jasper Sinclair, who would teach her step-by-step according to the rules.
"Favoritism" must feel something like this.
In the end, Elaine compensated Mrs. Woodward according to the original price of the item, but the parting was not pleasant for either side.
